This is a real stroy based on my grandparents- almost every part of it is real. And I found it weird how the song exactly matched so I made it into a song fic :D The song is Mary's Song by Taylor Swift :) Enjoy! I also wasn't sure what section to post this in, so don't yell atme if it's in the wrong one!
And in case you hadn't guessed, the little girl is me ;D
The little girl picked up the tiny, shell doll, and gazed at it forlornly. The head was a single, spherical shell, and two miniscule, black dots pinpointed the eyes. An open shell made an old fashioned head dress and the dress itself was shell upon shell, each layer sticking out a little more to make it look ruffled, although it was hard and brittle. She placed it back on the windowsill, and then picked it back up again. Since her grandparent's house was being cleared out, there was no point in leaving it for someone else to take. No one would want it. Well, no one except the little girl, who it meant the world too.
She used to sit on her grandmother's bed, and snuggle up with her, smelling her old, sweet perfume, and listening to her stories of her past. Her life had sounded so exciting to the little girl, who imagined herself living in the world her grandmother had known. The stories were always the same, but the way her grandmother told them made them seem new every time.
The girl held the shell doll and closed her eyes, letting her mind take her back to one of those days, and one of the stories she knew so well.
Her grandmother spoke of the girl's grandfather, who had passed away two years before her. She told her granddaughter the story of her life with her husband to keep the memory alive for her.
She said: "I was seven and you were nine
I looked at you like the stars that shined
In the sky, the pretty lights
The girl listened to the old lady's tale of two children who lived on the same road. They played together and did all the things little children liked to do. They ran up and down the streets screaming and laughing, always together. They always were together. Best friends forever- that's what they used to tell each other. And they were right.
"And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
Growing up and falling in love, and our mamas smiled,
And rolled their eyes, and said oh my my my
Their friendship drew the two families closer together. The little blonde girl and the dark haired boy formed a bond that would last for the rest of their lives- they just didn't know it yet.
"Take me back to the house in the backyard tree
Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me
You never did, you never did
She'd rush to the tree house with her doll, and find him waiting for her, like he always was. The tree in his back garden, with the house they had built themselves- well, they liked to think of it like that, but of course they had got the help of their fathers. But it was still their special place.
"Take me back when our world was one block wide
I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried
The two children shared everything; jokes, toys, sweets, secrets. They built up a world of friendship and trust that only the two of them were allowed to live in.
"Just two kids, you and I...
Oh my my my my
And now, the little blonde girl lay in bed with her granddaughter, reliving her childhood memories and feeling seven again.
"Well, I was sixteen when suddenly
I wasn't that little girl you used to see
But your eyes still shined like pretty lights
She told her granddaughter of how the years flew by, and suddenly everything had changed. She saw her friend in a different way, and he saw her differently too. They began to treat each other differently, but inside they still had that same friendship they had had when they were younger. But that friendship had become stronger and turned into love- a different love to what they felt for each other before.
"And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
They never believed we'd really fall in love
And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
And said oh my my my...
The families of the couple were already close- it was strange for their children to be dating, but they were all secretly pleased and happy for them. The boy treated his girl like a princess, buying her gifts and presents, although he couldn't afford much. Her favourite was a doll made entirely out of sea shells.
"Take me back to the creek beds we turned up
Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me
The grandmother told of how she relied on him more than she had ever done before. She trusted him with everything, and he trusted her too.
"Take me back to the time we had our very first fight
The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight
She warned her granddaughter that no matter how close people were to you, they were still capable of hurting you. And the closer they got to your heart, the more they could wreck it. But she assured her that it wasn't worth worrying about, because the one's with the power to break your heart never truly did.
"You stayed outside till the morning light
Oh my my my my
And like every fairy tale, the grandmother's story was predictable and had a happy ending.
"A few years had gone and come around
We were sitting at our favorite spot in town
And you looked at me, got down on one knee
Of course they got married. That was the granddaughter's favourite part of the story. She had a fairytale-like wedding, with a beautiful dress, at a pretty church just down the road from where they had lived their whole life.
"Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle
Our whole town came and our mamas cried
You said I do and I did too
And at the end of the wedding they went back home.
"Take me home where we met so many years before
We'll rock our babies on that very front porch
They lived on the same road they had lived on for all their childhood years. The lady told her little girl about the five children they had had there, and then two more at the house they were in at that very moment.
"After all this time, you and I
The little girl opened her eyes and looked at the bed she had laid on just a few months ago with her grandmother. Tears welled up, but she wasn't completely sad. Of course she missed her, and wished she had one more chance to say goodbye. But she knew that she had had a happy life. And now with both her grandparents gone, she could keep the doll in memory of them.
"I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine
I'll still look at you like the stars that shine
In the sky, oh my my my...
They'd lived full and happy lives together, and both died in their old age. They'd always loved each other, from the moment they met until the day they died. The little girl knew that.
And now she didn't have anyone to tell her stories of the past any more, she knew that she should focus on the present and the future. And her grandparents would always be with her, like the stars that shined in the sky. Even though she couldn't see them, she knew they were always there.
And she hoped that her life turned out as amazing as theirs had.
