Chapter Four

Ok, "kiss" was the wrong word for it. It was more like two people pressing their lips together. It was blank, meaningless, I felt…nothing.

I started to pull my face back, when I heard Jayda's voice. Then I got it. Instead of shoving him away like I had wanted to, instead I, as gently as possible, pulled myself backwards.

"Thanks for checking on me, baby," he said, his eyesight following something behind me. Jayda, to be exact.

"No problem. I was just worried…" I trailed off, glancing behind me to see Jayda and Jack waltzing out of the room, Jayda letting out a burst of laughter and giving Jack a playful tap on the arm, and then they were gone. Then I spun on Alaric, who was still watching them, until I punched him. Damn, he had a hard arm.

"What the hell was that for?" he demanded, startled. Notice he didn't say "ouch".

"If you ever call me baby again..." I warned, wiping my mouth of all Alaric germs.

He raised an eyebrow at me. "Don't flatter yourself," he said, a mischivous look on his face.

"What are you looking at me like that for?"

"Oh, nothing. I just noticed you didnt complain about me kissing you," he said mockingly.

What? Of course I didn't want him to. I felt nothing fo him. Or that kiss.

I narrowed my eyes at him. "You disgust me," I spat.

His eyes narrowed in response. "Thanks, I'm glad to know the feeling's mutual," he growled, spinning and starting to walk away.

I ran after him. "Oh no, we're not done here, Alaric."

"Oh, really? I thought I disgusted you? I thought I would be nice and rid you of my horrifying presence," he responded, not looking at me. We walked outside the main building in the direction of our rooms.

I opened my mouth to respond, but I didn't know what to say. "Liar," I spat out lamely.

"Niagara!" someone called from behind me again. And here comes heartache number two.

I turned around to find Ahren running up to us.

"How come no one ever calls Alaric?" Alaric mumbled next to me.

I ignored him and focused on Ahren. "Hey," I said sweetly to him, smiling. Well, until a red haired girl ran up to him, hugging him from behind.

"Ari!" she cried. Ugh.

He jumped, then laughed, untangling her from his waist. She was laughing too. I felt the smile melt off my face.

Hey, guys, this is Carly," he said, still laughing.

"I know," I mumbled, but he didn't hear me.

"So," he said, the freaking laughter finally dying down. "Where are your guys' partners?"

I sighed. "You're looking at both of them," I stated sadly.

His eyes widened, and he began to circle the two of us. "What? Are you for real? Niagara Tier and my twin brother, Alaric Stone… soul mates? Never would've guessed," he said jokingly.

"No kidding," I heard Alaric mutter next to me.

"Well, it was nice seeing you again," he said, turning, putting his arm around "Carly's" waist. If that was even her real name.

"You too…" I called softly. I doubt he even heard me. His and Carly's laughter probably drowned me out.

"Wow, and you thought I was pathetic," Alaric mumbled next to me.

I looked over at him. "What was that?"

"What? Oh, nothing," he said innocently, turning and starting to walk again.

"Oh, no you don't," I said, grabbing his shoulder, spinning him back around.

"What do you want?" he groaned as he turned around.

"Take it back," I said angrily.

"Take what back?" he demanded.

"Take back what you said! Take back that I'm pathetic! Do it Alaric, or I won't play along with your little charade."

He frowned. "Fine. I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you've loved the same guy your entire life, without telling him, and then just sat and watched as another girl stole him from you."

And then I slapped him. Hard. I immediately reeled backwards with a gasp. To be honest, it probably hurt my hand more than it had hurt him. Because it had really hurt my hand. I stifled a shout of pain, while he just sat massaging his jaw, moaning. I attempted to ignore my pain for the moment.

"Alaric, I am so sorry," I said hurriedly, reaching a hand out to him.

"Yeah. Thanks for that," he saidsarcastically.

"Please," I said, taking another step forward. "Just let me see it," I pleaded.

He raised an eyebrow at me, but cautiously removed his hand from his very red cheek.

"Oh, God," I muttered to myself, touching it tenderly. There was definitely going to be a bruise there tomorrow.

Suddenly, he turned and spat into the grass. Blood. I grimaced, taking a step back.

"Thanks," he said.

"I'm really sorry."

He rolled his eyes. "Jeez, is your hand made of brick or something?"

I shrugged sheepishly. "I am really sorry."

"Alright I get it," he growled at me.

"Sorry," I muttered.

"Nia," he warned.

"What, I said I was sor-"

"Don't say it again!" he shouted.

"Sorry," I said.

He growled and turned away in frustration.

"It was true, though," I muttered.

"What was?" he asked, turning back to face me.

"What you said. It was all true. You at least had the person you loved for a short time. I never had him. I never even stood a chance."

"Oh, definitely not," he said sarcastically.

"What do you mean?" I asked him.

"Seriously? Are you really that blind?"

"What? Tell me!" I demanded.

"He liked you since I started going out with Jayda," he said, as if he was shocked I didn't already know.

"What?" I asked, defeated.

"Yeah, but both of you were too scared of rejection to tell the other one how you felt. But maybe it was for the better," he ended sadly. I knew what he meant. If we had, we would've ended up just like him and Jayda. How ironic.

"Wow… I feel dumb," I mumbled.

"Correction. You are dumb," he said with a smile.

I raised an eyebrow, but still smiled. "Then you are an ass."

"Yea, well I'd rather be an ass then dumb," he smirked, starting to walk again. I followed.

"Too bad you're both," I replied.

He let out a laugh. Yes, Alaric actually laughed. "What?" I asked.

"Oh, nothing," he said with a sigh as we entered the large area that held the many apartments. We made our way up the stairs to our floor and followed the porch that belonged to all of the apartments facing this way until we came to our door. We entered to find Selene and Leo making out on the couch. Let's just say passionate was a bit of an understatement.

"Ugh, go to your room or something, just please don't do it here!" I cried.

Selene pulled back for a moment, taking a look at me. "Bite me," she spat, them went back to sucking Leo's face off.

I groaned, then put up a hand to shield my face as I made my way past them, turning off the TV, which was on for who knows why, and went immediately back to our room.

Saying "our room" felt weird. I rolled my eyes and shoved the door open to find my stuff strewn all over the room.

"Whoa," said Alaric when he entered. "Whose closet threw up in our room?"

I immediately turned and ran back to find Selene still trying to suffocate Leo.

"What the hell did you do to my stuff!" I shouted. Alaric was soon standing behind me.

Selene stopped swallowing her boyfriend and looked at me innocently. "I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about," she said with a smirk.

"Yes you do! All of my stuff is all over our room! It's on the floor and the beds…" I cried, my eyes starting to get wet. Alaric put a hand on my shoulder.

"I suggest you go pick it up," he growled at her.

She shot a glance at Leo, who gave her a disapproving look. She rolled her eyes and made her way down the hall to my room.

I plopped myself down on the couch, my face buried in my hands. Leo got up, putting a hand on my shoulder. "Listen, I'm really sorry, I'll go help her."

Alaric sat down next to me. "Wow, what an ass," he muttered, staring after her down the hall when Leo had gone.

And for whatever reason, I found this really funny. I laughed. And laughed and laughed and laughed.

"What?" he asked me, confusion covering his face, making him look five years younger.

I took a deep breath. "Oh, nothing, Ali."

"What did you just call me?" he asked me incredulously.

"Oh, nothing. Hey, you call me Nia, how come I can't call you Ali?"

"Because… well, because you can't," he demanded. He was smiling, but you could tell he still couldn't believe I had called him that.

"Oh, I think I will," I said, my smile getting bigger. "Or how about Ricky?" I asked.

"Oh, no , come on, anything but that," he said, his smile gone, but his eyes were still playful.

"Alright, fine. Ali."

He rolled his eyes, leaning back on the couch.

"Thank you," I said.

He raised an eyebrow. "For what?"

"For making me feel better."

He smiled. "Yeah, well, now we're even."

And then Selene came out, Leo pushing her gently by the shoulders.

"Go on, Selene. Say it," he urged.

Selene rolled her eyes. "I'm sorry Niagara," she droned.

"And…"he asked her.

"Do I have to say it?" she whined to Leo.

"Come on, you can do it," he reassured her.

"But I don't want to," she whimpered.

"Selene," he warned.

She sighed. "Alright, alright. And I was wrong to mess with your stuff," she finished to me.

"Thanks," I said, not really sure I meant it.

She rolled her eyes as Leo turned to bring her back to their room.

I sighed, getting off the couch and making my way back to the bedroom. I was glad to see it not covered with my clothes.

"Better," he mumbled behind me.

I quickly went over to my dresser to find my pajamas exactly where I had put them last night. I quickly went and changed in the bathroom. I returned to our room to find him doing what he does best. Reading. Except this time, it was a different book. He looked up when I entered the room. I could see the bruise already starting on his face.

"I really am sorry, Alaric," I said softly.

"I know he said," smiling at me calmly. "It's okay, I'm a big boy. I think I'll live."

I smiled, then went over to my bed and pulled back the covers to find a note. I frowned.

"What's that?" he asked me.

"I don't know," I muttered, sitting down on my bed and unfolding it.

It had neat, curvy hand writing on it that read:

Go to hell, bitch.

My frown deepened and I dropped the note onto my lap.

"Niagara, what does it say?" Alaric asked me, sitting up. I didn't answer. Instead, I dropped my head into my hands to hide my pathetic tears.

"Why does she hate me so much?" was all I could whimper. I felt the note snatched from my lap, but I didn't react.

~Alaric~

I read it, then crumpled it up, jumping off my bed and swinging open the door. I marched across the hallway and swung open the door to Selene's bedroom. They were both sitting on their own beds. How weird. Selene was sitting on her bed listening to music, but Leo was watching the TV that they had in their room. He got up and came to the door. I started unfolding the note from the tiny ball I had scrunched it into.

"Alaric, what's wrong?" Leo asked innocently.

I shoved the note at his chest, shoving him with it. "Control your bitch," I spat, then spun and stalked back to our room, slamming the door behind me.
