Chapter 1: Pilot/Hiding Behind a Lion's Mane

High school, a bittersweet place, sweet because it means you're that much closer to being an adult and being free, but bitter because it's like everyone's life is on display, you have no privacy, and the harder you try to be invisible the bigger the "notice me" sign that seems to float above your head seems to be. This was the thought of the junior that was walking through the halls of West Shore High. He wore baggy cargo shorts that hung just past his knee, a comfortably oversized grey hoodie covered his arms and torso, he wore black flip flops and a messenger style book bag slung over his shoulder, but that's not all. Long blonde hair hung in his face obscuring, the back of his hair reached past his shoulders, although if you noticed you'd see a pair of jade green eyes gazing out from behind the wavy strands, the first thing people thought when they saw his hair was "lion's mane".

The junior made his way to honors physics class, trying to remain as inconspicuous as possible, but no matter what he did, what he wore, how he did his hair, people always seemed to notice him, he could see people watching him walk past him, he didn't bother to spend the time to see with what kind of looks were giving him, he just didn't want any looks at all. That's why he decided to let his hair grow out so much, people noticed him no matter what he did, so he figured he'd make sure people notice only his hair, he didn't want people to notice his face or anything else about his appearance. Even though there was a group of people that always did without fail.

As the junior made his way into his physics class he sat in the back, again to remain inconspicuous. Right before the bell rang another student ran in, the only way to describe him was…giant. He was a beast, he was easily six and a half feet tall and weighed almost two hundred pounds, he used to be the school's linebacker but he quit the team saying something about not having free time for just being a teenager, another way to describe the giant was hot, he had lightly tanned skin, and medium length black hair, chocolate brown eyes that anyone could get lost in, he usually wore cargo pants or shorts and wore a tight shirt that showed off his perfect six pack.

"Ah, Salem Walker, thank you for joining us today." Salem scratched the back of his head nervously and gave a small smile,

"Sorry Mr. Shu" the physics and also the chemistry teacher Mr. Schulenburg although the kids just called him "Mr. Shu" or "the Professor" considering he was easily the smartest man in the entire building, just smiled and replied,

"Well you weren't technically late so your lucky this time, wouldn't want you to be late to class would we?" Salem just grinned in response,

"Of course not Professor." The middle-aged man just laughed,

"Good, will since your usual seat was already taken just sit next to Leo back there." The junior with the mane like hair snapped his head up, jade eyes widening in shock. Salem…sitting next to him, the one person he had a crush on, the one openly gay person he had a crush on, sitting next to him. Mr. Schulenburg picked up on Leo's reaction. "Of course if that's okay with Mr. Raines." Leo snapped out of his thoughts, not knowing what else to do he just responded with a nod of his head. The teacher responded with a happy smile, and Salem responded with a different kind of smile altogether, the kind a kid would give when he just got a wonderful surprise.

Salem and Leo were the only two juniors in honors physics, Salem had doubled up on honors chemistry and honors physics while Leo taken biology his freshman year and honors chemistry his sophomore year. Salem sat next to Leo giving him a warm smile, Leo obviously not knowing what to do just nodded and paid attention to class, writing down the few formulas in his book. As soon as class was over Leo grabbed his stuff and quickly walked out of class leaving behind a sadly smiling Salem. Salem packed up his stuff and headed to lunch.

Since West Shore was a public school in California, and since no one didn't enjoy the wonderful weather that California was known for, students were allowed to eat outside, there were tables for the kids to sit at and there were also trees that gave plenty of shade should the students decide to sit there. Leo made his way to the tree he always sat at lunch. He sat down and ran his fingers through his hair while giving a sad sigh. He was still kicking himself for what he did last period, there was Salem, the hottest guy in school, the hottest gay guy in school, the nicest, hottest, gay guy in school. And Leo couldn't give him any response except a nod. Fan-fucking-tastic.

He looked at his lunch thinking about that smile Salem had given him when he was told next to sit to him. Surely he was imagining the joy he had seen flash across Salem's features right? I mean he never thought he was particularly attractive, he was about five foot ten, with a lean muscle build, he had a little fat but barely any at all. He was told he was attractive before though he kind of just brushed it off.

Leo just shook his head, his hair flopping back and fourth, he took out his I-Pod, selected the Panic! At the Disco album "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" and set about to eat his lunch. Although he never noticed the group of people watching him eat. From the stone table only a few feet away. Salem and his group of friends watched Leo listen to his I-Pod and eat. That's what he did every lunch, no one ever asked him to sit with them, nor did Leo ever ask to sit with anyone. Salem sighed and set about eating his lunch, his friend Kyle looking at Leo then back to him,

"Dude, go talk to him." Salem looked up to his friend's smiling face, Kyle was an attractive guy, long brown hair (though not as long as Leo's) dark tanned skin and perfect muscles like Salem, though he wasn't as tall or as muscled he was still attractive, Kyle's girlfriend Sam sat next to him, her long blonde hair tied into a simple pony tail, she was a few inches shorter than him, shook her head.

"Look we know you like him, hell the entire school knows you like him, the only reason no one else has made a move is because they know you like him."

"That's easier said than done." Salem mumbled, Sam shook her head, but looked up and suddenly said,

"HEY! CHELS WE'RE OVER HERE!" the girl looked at Sam, then smiled and walked over. Chelsea had just started her first time here today; she was in Sam's psychology class and was also in AP Art. She was on the shorter side, and she was a big girl but she was in no way unattractive, just barely tanned skin covered her face, while long curly brown strands fell freely past her shoulders and to her middle back.

"Hey wassup Sammi, who are these two guys?" Sam just smiled and hugged Kyle,

"This is my boyfriend Kyle." Chelsea smiled at Kyle and Kyle returned the smile and waved, "And Mr. Mopey over there is Salem." She looked over and sure enough Salem was looking pretty down, he was sadly eating his sandwich and staring at the table. Chelsea glanced at the couple and asked,

"What's with him?" Kyle responded this time,

"Oh, he's just upset because he's too scared to talk to this guy he has a huge crush on." Chelsea nodded in understanding,

"Well who's the guy?" Chelsea asked with curiosity, Kyle motioned to Leo,

"That guy over there, Leo Raines." Chelsea, who had been about to take a bite out of her sandwich froze, dropped her sandwich then demanded,

"Leo Raines?!" she turned around to see and saw Leo eating a bag a chips and still listening to his I-Pod, Chelsea stood and then proceeded to scream,

"YO! LITTLE LION CUB!" Leo immediately froze, chip half way to his mouth, he jumped up, and started looking around. Only one person in the entire world called him that, leaving his food and even his I-Pod on the ground, he saw Chelsea and his eyes widened to the size of saucers, he quickly ran over to her, and practically tackle hugged her. He even picked her up and spun around a couple of times laughing hysterically. All the while this was going on Salem stared, he had never seen Leo show so much emotion at all before, hell he never heard him laugh before, he definitely decided he like his laugh…a lot.

"When the fuck did you get here?" Leo asked excitedly,

"I just transferred here, my dad got a better job offer and here we are!" Leo couldn't stop grinning, then Chelsea said, "Ok so grab your shit, you're sitting with us." Leo looked at her, then looked at Salem then looked away a blush starting to creep across his face, which didn't go unnoticed by Chelsea who just started to smile, she walked over to grab Leo's stuff then put it on the table and slowly motioned for Leo to come over.

Leo just stared, he couldn't say no to Chelsea, otherwise she'd say something to Salem, whether it was something good or something bad he didn't know, and he didn't want to find out. So he slowly walked over to the group of kids. Praying to god he didn't fuck up.

Sucks yes, couldn't think of how else to end it.
