Chapter One
An awful dong was ringing from the tower clock in the middle of the city, a dark figure was in a hurry. The sirens of police cars were heard from a far, the sound approaching the hasty man. Jumping into an empty well nearby, one foot in the bucket, the weight of the male brought the bucket downwards. Scattered foot prints were heard from above, as he held in his breath.
"Man, He got away!" the voice echoed, "Split up men! We have to find him! GO!"
The sounds of murmuring were trailing off along with slamming of car doors, the male at the bottom the well sighed. So close, he thought. Slowly, using his upper body strength he climbed up the well rope. He had done this many times, he looked up an saw the stones around. Grabbing onto the edge, he pulled himself upwards. Sitting on the slightly uncomfortable stones, he counted to himself how many times he was almost caught over the week. His conclusion,
Five.
Sneaking towards a small den, the wooden door had mixed in well with the wooden building by it. The man pushed open the door, carefully closing it behind him. A figure had awoken, The blond with blue streaks spoke up, rubbing his sleepy eyes.
"What the hell are you doing up Ryder?! Its Midnight!" He half hissed-half whispered, He was wearing a white beater and black and gray pajama pants.
Ryder shrugged, running a hand through his toffee coloured hair, "Had another run in with the police, It wasn't pretty Lance."
"Where's Jack?" Lance asked, clearly worried about the youngest member, "He didn't get caught... Did he?!"
Ryder kept silent, spinning the silver gun around his finger. Lance took a while before understanding, his eyes widened. Ryder took a seat in the pleated armchair.
"You Didn't..." Ryder shook his head, clearly disappointed in himself. Lance continued, "Man, you're the best of the best, How could he get caught?"
"Jack's a slow learner, Not like Blaize, Lark, Nano, and Dante, He needs to get the hang of kill and run." Ryder replied, putting his feet up on the rusty table.
Lance sat there on the torn sofa, yawning. "You know, you're gonna have to bail him out someday."
Ryder laughed conceitedly, "I will, Maybe."
Lance rolled his eyes. This has been Ryder's third time losing a member. Ever since Lark was shot 3 times in one night, he had to rest up in the backroom, Nano was taking care of him every now and then. The group needed a sixth member, just to replace Lark until he recovers fully. Ryder needs to man up thought Lance.
"Get some sleep Ryder, Its my turn to watch out anyway," Lance said grabbing a black gun with him, "I'll keep an eye on things."
Nodding, Ryder walked back to his room and collapsed on his comfy bed. As soon as he hit the mattress he was out like a light.
"Janice! Wake up darling!" A sweet voice called, "Come on, slow poke!"
A auburn haired beauty sat up from her comfy bed, and stretched. Her eyes looked around her room and landed on the neon digits on the rectangular prism device.
9:42 a.m. it read.
"Coming Mom," Janice exclaimed back, her gentle voice flowed. Hopping out of bed and down the stairs. Today was Saturday, and Janice was starting her day working at the grocery store. She greeted her mother with a kiss on the cheek and sat down digging into her breakfast. Her mother was beautiful, even for her mid 40's. Janice had her mothers hair, but instead of hazel eyes she had warm chocolate coloured eyes with a twinkle gleaming every now and then.
"How is your morning so far mom?" Janice asked after successfully digesting a piece of toast. Her mother smiled dearly at her.
"Its been good." Her mother answered, checking her watch, "You better get ready soon if you want me to give you a lift."
Janice nodded, smiling brightly. Drinking all the milk, she placed her dishes into the sink and rushed upstairs to her room. Looking out the window, the sun was shining, the heat was radiating into her blue bedroom, and the air was refreshing when she opened her window. Today was going to be beautiful. Quickly brushing her teeth, she went right into changing. Being satisfied with dark blue folded jean shorts, and a purple T-shirt she left her neatly folded, and clean room. Hopping down the steps, her mother stood near the door watching her with amusement in her face.
"You're really something Janice," her mother commented. Smiling, Janice grabbed her black sandles.
Struggling to keep balance as she slipped on her black strapped sandles, "Thank you."
Heading to a blue Audi, Janice slipped into the passengers' seat following her mother's position in the drivers seat. A question popped up in her mind.
"Is dad staying late? For Chris' case?" Her father was one of the top lawyers, and could get anyone out of trouble. Chris was Janice's cousin, He had gotten into some trouble with the law.
"I'm afraid so," Her mother concentrated on the road, "you know him and his job."
Janice nodded, she felt her face brighten as she saw the sign 'superstore' up ahead. Within 15 minutes, she had arrived at the entrance of the store.
"I'll pick you up at 5 okay?" Her mother asked, after seeing Janice shake her head 'yes'. They said their goodbyes, and she drove off.
"I like to welcome you to the team," Mr. Rogers, her manager exclaimed shaking her hand rather fast. He had a gray beard, and had no hair on his head, he had a major potbelly, that it wasn't much of a surprise when someone catches him eating 5 pounds of chocolate in his office, "I hope you will enjoy your time here."
Janice smiled nervously, before leaving her boss' office. A redheaded male approached her with a creepy looking grin. She looked behind him to see a group of older males smirking suggestively at her, their slightly creepy eyes on her made her shiver in disgust. She noticed that the red head was wearing a green sleeveless vest, On the upper right side was a name tag.
Crap.
He was one of her co-workers. Her keen eyes caught the name of Craig. He still had the grin on his face.
"Hey babe, are you from Tennesse?" His voice was like fingernails slowly running across a chalkboard. Painful, "cause your the only Ten I see."
His friends started snickering. She stood her guard and uttered, "Uhm, Excuse Me. But should you really be talking to you're co-worker like that?"
"Who cares? Co-worker or not, whenever you see a hot chick you gotta turn on the charm," He wiggled his eyebrows, it made her cringe in detest.
"Craig, leave the poor girl alone." A girl with purple streaks in her black hair said, She looked to be around Janice's age, which was 18. Her icy blue eyes gazed on the now nervous employee, "She's had enough, Now go."
With a slight whimpering nod, he and his groupies rushed off. The pretty girl smirked in triumph, she then turned to Janice.
"Craig is always like that." She replied, extending her hand "I'm Victoria by the way."
"Tha-anks," Janice stuttered a bit, calming down, then shook her hand "Nice to meet you Victoria. I'm Janice. So tell me, why is he so terrified of you?"
Victoria laughed, "Lets just say, I kicked him where it hurts. Thrice."
That caused Janice to laugh. At least she had one friend so far. Heading over to her cashier area, she went through a customer's groceries. Scanning each item, totaling up cost, and working with a credit card. These simple things flew by fast, before she knew it, it was already 5pm.
One more hour, she thought, One more hour and then I'm free.
Yawning in the process, an earth shattering scream echoed the whole store. The sound of glass breaking, and a gun shot. Once, Twice. All the customers were screaming, yelling, hollering, and moving as quickly as possible to leave the store. Janice's hazel eyes widened, before running towards the exit. All of her co-workers, working there way to the door. One person was missing though, she watched her boss escape behind the glass door. Janice snapped into realization.
Victoria.
Her new-found friend wasn't out the door, and all of them had left. Grabbing a package knife, she carefully walked around the store. Cautiously, Janice turned back and forth seeing if she can see her pal. While passing through the dairy section, her eyes caught the vision of Victoria, who was lying on the ground a man towering over her.
"Where's your brother?!" The man spoke, his voice rough and edgy, "Come on! I know you know where he is."
Blood trickled down Victoria's face, her expression was deadly. If looks could kill, the man would've been dead. Her lips were locked by her teeth, not mumbling a word to him. He chuckled evilly clicking the gun, He placed the silver object underneath Victoria's neck. Sweat beaded on top of her forehead.
"Leave, Right Now."
The bravery in Janice's voice alerted the man. His face was slightly pale, a deep scar ran over his left eye. He had a bit of stubble, slightly lean built, and his gray eyes were like stones. Wearing a black long coat, Janice swallowed, she could make out the handles of snipers, and shot guns. Seven handles... seven guns. The man smirked in victory, tipping the gun closer to Victoria causing her to choke a little.
"What are you gonna do about it?" His voice mocked Janice, He noticed Janice approaching slowly. His face angered, "Come any closer and she's dead, you hear me!"
Janice froze in her position, Toying with the hidden package knife in her back pocket.
"Stop it Jack! This thing is between you and me, It has nothing to do with her," Victoria choked slightly, Victoria's blue eyes looked at Janice sending her a silent alert, "Run Janice!"
Janice didn't listen, she just stood in her spot. Jack laughed, looking away for Janice a moment. Perfect timing, She grabbed the knife handle and chucked it right at Jack. She gasped in surprise when he caught the blade between his forefinger and middle finger.
He clicked his tongue clearly annoyed, "Fiesty are we? You know, women aren't suppose to play with sharp things... unless there willing to have a death sentence."
Janice's throat went dry. Watching Jack approach her, after kicking Victoria hard in the gut. She watched in horror as Victoria coughed up bits of blood on the marble floor, muttering along the lines 'Rogers is gonna kill me.' Jack held the knife, throwing it up in the air every now and then. Swiftly he made his way to Janice, pointing the blade at her. The blade coursed her neck every so gently, Janice held in her breath. The blade was cold against her skin.
"Hate to see a pretty thing go," Jack ran his large hand through her auburn hair, she cringed inwardly, "But you lead me to it."
Jack raised the silver blade upwards about to slash, a tsk-ing noise was heard in the silence.
A smooth and crisp voice said, "Jack. I come back for you and all I hear is you threatening women? How am I ever gunna forgive you?"
The person's voice made Jack freeze in front of the girl, "Ryder..." Cautiously, Jack turned his head.
The extremely gorgeous man approached them, He had shaggy toffee coloured hair, beautiful turquoise eyes, well built, slightly tanned, and a smile to die for. He gave a smirk, before pinning Jack up against the wall. Janice took a minute to realize what was going on. The male named Ryder had a Assualt Rifle in his right hand, while his left hand graced upon Jack's neck. The opponent struggled, accidently dropping the knife, trying to kick and punch Ryder in any place to weaken him. The charming man dodged the attacks with ease.
"I should've known you were working with them," Ryder spat the last word like it was acid, "Trying to kill Lark huh?"
His grip tightened around his rival's neck, Jack choked up. Janice watched in horror, as she crawled her way to Victoria.
"You disgust me." With that last phrase, and without hesitation Ryder shot Jack. The traitor fell onto the floor lifelessly, the bullet had pierced through his heart.
Placing the gun back into his jacket pocket, he turned to both the girls. His eyes landed on the angelic beauty. Her auburn coloured hair leaned more to a light brown, Her hazel eyes had specks of gold, Her heart shape faced was lightly tanned along with the rest of her. Her legs were killer, as she styled the jean shorts. He then turned to the other girl, his eyes flashed with a recognition.
"Victoria?"
The slightly wounded silhouette nodded, she managed a weak smile at Ryder. She opened her arms slightly, He hugged her ever so gently.
"Lark has been worried about you." Janice looked back and forth, how did they know each other? Ryder continued, "You better go talk to him, He really misses you."
A warning siren rang in the empty building. Police were coming to check out the scene. Ryder thought fast on his feet, placing Victoria's bruised arm.
"Hey beautiful, can you help me with her?" Janice nodded, grabbing Victoria's other arm. Quickly, the trio ran there way out the back door, just when the police came in. A black van pulled up. She noticed it was another male, He had blond hair and blue streaks, on his right arm was a tattoo, He was slightly muscular. His big emerald eyes widened when he saw her pal in pain.
"Hurry and get in everyone." His voice was hurried. Both Ryder and Janice pushed Victoria into the car seat, then Janice jumped in. Ryder opened the car door swiftly, and slid right in.
"Lets Go Lance," with that the car accelerated, driving them wherever. The car was driving 120 speed per mile.
The ride was awkward, until Ryder broke the silence.
"You'll never guess who was at the store... It was Jack," Ryder revealed, leaning back in the seat, "He was a traitor after all."
"I thought he was in jail?"
"I thought he was too," Ryder answered, running a hand through his musky hair, "Well back to the drawing board huh?"
Lance nodded, then looked through the driver's mirror. He saw Janice sitting there looking out the window, "Hey, we didn't quite get your name."
Janice snapped out of her daze, "Its Janice, Janice Lockhart." Her voice was gentle, and quiet.
"Well, I'm Lance," The blond pointed to himself, "and that's Ryder."
"Nice to meet you two," Janice spoke, her eyes wandering around trying to get used to the new environment. Ryder noticed her actions, he opened up the cabinet in front of him. Inside was a white box with a red cross on the cover. Ryder turned around, Janice made eye contact with Ryder. She blushed, Ryder had known she was staring at him.
Ryder grinned in amusement, he passed Janice the small first aid box, "Here, you can bandage her up for us."
She nodded, not making eye contact with him, then began patching up Victoria. She was slightly asleep, but winced when the cleaning alcohol connected with her blooded wounds.
"Sorry," Janice muttered quietly, continuing to wipe the scratches. After wrapping the bandage around her fresh wound, she placed all the material back in the case.
Janice looked at Victoria who was still sleeping, then looked at both the alluring males in front of her. She sighed.
Where were they going?
