CHAPTER 1

The plane had just touched on the ground moving slowly next to the connector ramp. Soon even that was completed and the terminal now filled with people exiting and boarding the planes.

He searched around the room. Trying to locate someone, until his visual picked up on an older woman whom approached him with tears dripping down her worn face. The young man threw his arms out to catch the crying woman as she collapsed. He hugged her tight for a minute before pulling her away for a moment to wipe away the tears. "It's okay, Mom. I'm here." He pulled her close against himself again.

"Oh Ryan, I don't know what to do. It's just so..."

Ryan shushed his mother and continued to hold her close as they grieved for the murder of his sister.

It was a long car drive back to Ryan's mothers' Pittsburgh house. But when the car ceased they sat for moment looking at one another as she held his hand. Once releasing it they opened up the doors and slowly got out. Ryan of course retreated to the trunk which contained his luggage. After retrieving it he went for his mother and walked her up to the door ascending the few steps.

The inside of the house was just as Ryan had remembered. The same yellow and white glow of the angels that decorated the place as they did when he was growing up there. The angels had always brought some kind of peace and solace to Ryan's mind. But despite the joyous look of the house the feel and mood were quite different. It was only a house of pain and sadness.

He was now in the living room staring at old pictures of his family on the tapestry over the freshly logged fireplace. He was especially interested in the photos of him and his big sister. The last time he saw her was last year on his twenty-first birthday.

Ryan noticed over the years that his sister had transformed. The more recent the pictures became the darker they got.

"After you left is when she started to really change." Ryan's mother startled him by speaking.

"Do you even know what happened?"

She breathed in deeply not wanting to revisit the police coming to her place as she repeated their words verbatim. "She was brutally beaten, maybe tortured for hours, raped for sure."

"Count on the police to be sensitive." Ryan was bitter. "Do they at least have any leads?"

"It's been almost three days and they haven't got anything."

Ryan decided to cease his questioning for now as he noticed his mother becoming hysterical again. Instead he picked up his bags and walked upstairs into his room. Once he threw his bags down he fell onto his mattress. He needed to remake everything. Most of his stuff was packed up in the closet. He then rolled over onto something hard. He then discovered a slight cut on the side of his mattress. It had been sown shut. Ryan reached into his pocket and unthreaded it. He then pulled out a small black book which he recognized as his sisters' diary.

He remembered that he had read it so many times and laughed at when his sister caught him. Like old times he caught himself reading it again remembering the passages laughing at the old crushes she had and even excerpts about him reading her diary. Then he hit some recent passages about a guy. Ryan read deeply:

Tyrell is the best thing to ever happen to me. He is a man who makes me feel like a real woman. I can't imagine being away from him.

Today Tyrell and I went to the park. Another man hit on me and Tyrell got so angry that he yelled and beat the guy up. I'm so lucky to have someone so protective. He also wants me to move in with him on 435 West James Street.

Its been three weeks and Tyrell seems so different. He's so insistent on me seeing other guys, I don't know why.

The diary has ended with no more passages.

Ryan closed it and decided to pay this Tyrell a visit.
