I woke up with a feeling of disorientation. But as soon as I felt the body restlessly shift besides me, last night came rushing back to me.
I looked at the man next to me. Adrian lay on his stomach; his arm was draped over my waist. His very size overwhelmed the bed. For a second I was captivated by the golden hair that dusted his arms, by the slight tan of his body that contrasted to my pallid one. Then I heard him grunt again and then he was silent. His body relaxed once again and his breathing deepened.
Slowly and carefully I lifted his arm from my body and laid it on the bed. He did not stir as I rose from the bed and headed to the bathroom.
I washed my face with freezing water and brushed my teeth with the disposable toothbrush the motel had provided. I tried hard not to gaze at myself in the mirror. The emotional numbness I felt last night was quickly wearing off and leaving in its place an anxiety and depression too gloomy to bear.
On their own accord my eyes fell upon my reflection. My hair was long and tousled, my face familiar in it's features but the brown eyes were distant and empty. Vile rose in my throat and I ran to the toilet just as last nights dinner made its way out of me. When my body had nothing more to purge I sat by the porcelain throne and began to weep, placing my hand over my mouth as to not make a noise.
"Come on, come on…You…you can do this Jenny. One day at a time…" I had grown accustomed to consoling myself.
I sat there until I had no more tears to shed. Then I took a deep breath and started all over again. I brushed my teeth again and showered and afterwards I wrapped my body in a large towel and headed back to the room.
Adrian sat on the bed and when I entered the room his sharp eyes fell on me. The daytime did little to erase the harshness of his face. While young he was handsome and beautiful but now as a man there was a certain brutality to his features gained from life. His body had filled in well, muscled and effortlessly graceful.
"You okay?"
"Of course." I lifted my chin proudly and Adrian simply eyed me and then got up.
"Your pay is on the bedside table." He said as he headed towards the bathroom. At his words my hand turned into fists and I froze. It wasn't until I heard the shower running that I began to quickly move.
He had indeed left the money on the bedside table and for a second I wondered why he had so much cash in hand. I counted thirty hundreds-bills, precisely three grands. One time would be enough and for that I counted myself incredibly lucky.
I began dressing with the very same things I had worn last night, taking the money and placing it in my pockets. Luckily the pockets had zipper.
The shower was still running when I left the motel room.
I began walking towards home, or at least the way I believed my town was located in. Truth is I just wanted to walk, anywhere. Far and away if I could.
The morning despite it's coldness looked bright and cheery, making me self conscious of the clothing on my body. My feet began to hurt as soon as I stepped out of the room. By the time I got to the road I knew that I wouldn't get anywhere with them on. I took them off, not caring that the road was freezing against my feet.
Cars drove past me but I was past hearing them or seeing them. I walked aimlessly down the road. When my feet grew numb from the cold I stood and stared down the road. The practical voice in my head asked me what I should do? Should I turn back towards the motel and further into the town I had just left? Perhaps I could find a bus there?
The loud horn of a vehicle brought me back to the present. My eyes fell on the old red pickup truck I would recognize anywhere. It belonged to Mike Cormack. He was Dana's boyfriend, had been since she and I were in high school. They had a strange and rocky relationship that I'm pretty sure was to blame for the random bruises on both of them. He was one of the bad boys that as teenagers we dream about. One of those boys that almost always ended up unemployed and with a criminal record a mile long.
Mike stopped his truck besides me.
"Jenny," He said. His green eyes traveled slowly from my feet to my head and to the shoes on my hand. When he looked at me, he made me wish I was wearing a large and shapeless coat.
"Mike." I nodded in acknowledgement.
"Long night last night?" he smirked.
"Something like that," I lifted my chin and looked him in the eyes.
"Need a ride, babe?"
"I rather walk…Don't call me babe."
"It's a long walk." His gaze traveled down my body once again.
A gray car pulled up behind the truck and though I had first seen it at nighttime there was no denying whom it belonged to.
Adrian stepped out of his car and began walking towards me.
"Come." He said. He removed his jacket and placed it over my shoulder. His scent on the leather assaulted me.
"Get in the car." Adrian angrily said. There was a possessive tone in his voice.
My gaze fell on Mike, whose smirk turned into a smile. He looked at Adrian and then looked at me and raised one of his brows.
"A McIntyre, huh?" Mike said.
"I don't see how that's any of your business."
"Not good enough for you, am I? Had to go whoring yourself to one of them-" I doubt he knew how right on point his words were.
"Say something more," Adrian said as he came to stand in front of me.
"Really?" Mike said. They stared at each other in the eyes, I felt as if I was drowning in testosterone. When Mike made a move to get out of the car I hurried to place myself in front of Adrian.
"Let's go." I grabbed Adrian's arm and pulled him towards his car, but he wouldn't bulge.
"The school yard looks are not impressive so you can both stop it!" Grabbing a hold of Adrian's waist I pulled tried to pull him towards his car again. He glanced at me; his blue eyes appeared to understand me without any words. He brought his arm around my shoulders and we walked together to his car, all while ignoring Mike. I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard the engine of Mike's ancient truck pull away.
"Get in the car, I am driving you home."
"That's not necessary."
"Humor me." There was no room for argument in his tone.
The ride back into town was mostly a silent one. The anger in the air was almost tangible.
"Why did you leave?" He asked, briefly glancing my way. I shrugged at his question.
"Do you mind if I turn on the music?" I said searching for something to distract my mind.
"Go ahead." He replied, after a while. When the music floated the air, my nerves began to calm and perhaps so did his, for his hands no longer gripped the steering wheel as tightly. His anger appeared to lessen.
"Do you want something to eat? There's a diner-" He looked at me and though there was still some anger in his body, this face did not look as harsh and bitter as it did yesterday.
"No that's fine, I need to get home."
"'Kay." Much later his car came to a stop across from Darla's place.
I reached for the car door handle, hoping nobody I knew would see me. Before I opened the door, Adrian's hand closed over my arm. When I turned he was closer than I imagined. So close I could see the stubble on his chin.
"What?" I said when he did not say anything.
"I want you exclusively." He said after a minute.
"Excuse me?"
"I want to keep seeing you, I'll pay you of course-"
"No." I shrugged his hand from my arm.
"Three grands per night-"
"No!"
"Why not?" His gaze became cynical. "Why fuck ten per night, when you'd only have to-" I felt a knot in my throat and my eyes began to water.
"I said no." I shrugged off his jacket and threw it on his lap.
I reached for the door again but his hand once again came over my arm, turning me to him. He leaned in and his other hand came behind me holding my head in place. His lips came over mine, harsh and demanding at first but slowly the brutality of it lessened. They were just as demanding but instead they grew gentle. Teasing mine until I wrapped my arms around his neck and played his lips as he played mine. Last night we had never kissed, he kissed my neck my chest, my forehead, but never my lips.
He placed one last kiss on my mouth before he moved away, his eyes shining brightly under fair lashes and brows.
"If you change your mind…My name is Adrian McIntyre."
"Goodbye then, Adrian."
Unsteadily I left the car and closed the door behind me and I did not look back. Three thousand dollars would be enough to hold my family afloat for a while. But it would never be enough to loose my heart to one of them.
Don't forget to let me know what you guys think, its like food for the brain : D
