Now on with the story. Yay

Chapter One – Counting Sheep

Emmy

"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I don't know what happened" That was the truth. I don't know what happened. Anyway, how was I supposed to explain to them that one moment I was stood, talking to Lexi, then next she was lying on the floor blood pouring out of her neck, and me, I was sat next to her, blood on my hands. It wasn't me though, that killed her I mean, no matter what they, or anyone else thinks. Mr and Mrs Donald keep asking me what happened but I don't know what to say, why can't they leave me alone. Well, I don't exactly blame them, they are Lexi's parents, I mean, were. But I was her best friend, I'm grieving too! I can tell that they think I killed her, everybody does but why would I? We were so close. We shared secrets, we shared clothes and we told each other everything, why would I kill her? They think I'm crazy. The police do, I mean. I assure you I'm not though. They're keeping me in a white room with no windows until the trial, that's how I know they think I'm crazy. Just because I told them that I saw a black shadow just before she fell that nobody else saw. Why did I tell them that? Am I that stupid? Of course they weren't going to listen. Of course they were going to think I was crazy. Whenever they have to talk to me they sort of creep in like they don't want to aggravate me.

They keep telling me that they only need me in court because I'm an eye-witness but, if that is the case, then why are they stopping me from going home. I wouldn't be so angry about being here if it wasn't so boring. There is literally nothing to do. The most entertaining thing is watching them slowly walk towards me like they're scared of me. I mean, why would they be scared of me. I don't exactly look scary; I'm your typical girl-next-door type. Plain mousy brown hair, freckles scattered across the bridge of my nose and the most easily blushable cheeks ever. At the slightest thing I blush. It's unbearable! I grew up to people saying ridiculous things about me that I would blush at and then they would take that as a confirmation. Hopefully after the trial, which is tomorrow, they'll let me go home.

I'm so hungry. I'm used to eating loads of food but here I don't get any snacks just three meals a day. I know what you'll be thinking, she must be really fat, but I'm not actually, I have something called a fast metabolism which means that my body just burns up all of the calories I eat really quickly, so I don't gain weight and I'm always hungry. But I don't think that's because of the fast metabolism thing, I'm just one of those people that just can't stop eating. If it wasn't for the always hungry part, it would be amazing, I mean never getting fat. Loads of girls my age are obsessed over weight but I don't need to worry. Oooh someone's coming in.

"It's nine o'clock; we're going to have to turn your light off."

"Oh, okay."

Well that was an interesting conversation. Too bad he didn't stay longer. Oh well, I guess I should get some sleep, big day tomorrow. Oh God, I sound like my Mother! Ugh, I'm not even tired. I hate it when people tell you to count sheep because with me it never works and I don't see the point. I can never get to sleep though especially here because even though they have turned the lights off, the walls are so white that they seem to glow and it's actually kind of scary, eerie. Ok now I've freaked myself out for nothing, well done Em. Oh well, might as well try counting sheep. Right so just close your eyes and... imagine a fence with sheep jumping over it and every time one jumps over it count it. 1,2,3,4…

…155, 156, 157. Oh stop it now; it obviously isn't going to work so just stop it. Ooh actually I'm starting to feel a little bit tired. Keep counting! Wait, what number was I up to …oh yeah, 158, 159, 160, 161-

"Em-my, Em-my" Someone was saying in a sing-song voice that made me want to kill whoever it was.

"Em, get up" I heard my mother's voice.

"Uhhh" I groaned. My eyes slowly fluttered open and straight away I looked at the clock that told me it was 6:00, in the morning! I looked to my Mum who was stood next to Grace, my other best friend who was obviously the one practically singing my name. After realising this fact I glared at her as fiercely as I could this early in the morning but all she did was just smirk at me.

I turned my focus to my Mum who I could tell was growing impatient by the look on her face.

"Mum, why did you come here so early" I whined.

"You need to get ready before court"

"But Mum, why can't I go back to bed, you can just go away and come back in an hour." I knew it sounded rude but once it was out, there was nothing I could do about it.

"Emmeline Acacia Rosamond, you will come with me right away and not say another bad thing about it. You want to look respectable in court don't you?" Not waiting for an answer, she carried on. "Well then come on."

My parents obviously thought it was the 19th century when I was born for them to give me such a tragically embarrassing name as Emmeline Acacia Rosamond. I mean none of the words even link together. Emmeline means work, Acacia means honourable and Rosamond means pure rose. So I have no idea what they were thinking. Maybe they wanted me to grow up to be an honourable, working rose? I don't think so.

"Look Em" my Mum said in a much softer voice. "We all just want this to go as smoothly as possible so ple-"

"Okay, okay, just give me a minute to get changed" I cut her off.

"Oh alright, I've brought you some nice clean clothes" she told me.

"Thanks Mum" I said.

"Okay then, see you in a minute" Grace said.

Minutes later we were outside and as the glorious sun beat down on the parched pavement, I inhaled the scents of summer that I had missed so much: the beautifully indescribable scent of grass, especially freshly-cut grass, the amazingly light and sweet smell of all of the flowers, the rich, deep, woody scent that seemed to radiate off all of the trees as you walked past them, the extremely yummy smell of barbecues that seemed to hang in the air, the wonderfully coconutty smell of sun cream and last but not least the completely nonexistent scent of sun.

"So where are we going anyway?" I asked.

"We are going home because we asked them if you could because you need lots of rest before the trial and that bed is not much softer than rock" Mum said.

"So you woke me up at six am because I needed more rest?"

"Yes, because we are are taking you home so you can sleep in your own bed for a few hours" Mum said

"And then we are going to pick out an outfit that practically screams innocent but at the same time says, I'm not going down without a fight" Grace told me.

"But I'm just a witness" I said.

"Yeah? What's your point?"

"My point is that I don't need to go down with a fight because they're not trying to send me down."

"Whatever, I'm going to find you an outfit whether you like it or not."

"But why?"

"Because I love clothes and you, my friend, are in for a long day of trying on clothes." Oh joy. "Gosh I'm so excited." Grace said, believe it or not, excitedly.

A/N I have been thinking about putting this up for a while but I was scared of someone stealing it so please be kind. It took me absolutely ages to think of those describing words in that chapter about the scents of summer. You would not believe how long it took. Please R+R for I would love to know what you think. Thank you so much and hopefully I will update soon but I'm not sure because I'm so caught up in reading other stories. If you review I will look at your stories and review them too if I have time. By the way this is a romance and the romance will come but I just have to get Emmy to the place where all the romance happens.
