Chapter Three
I grabbed the ringing phone by the divider of the kitchen and the dining room.
"Hello, good afternoon. Smith residence, Travis speaking. How may I help you?" I answered, black receiver in hand.
"Travis...? this is Mr. Evans" the deep voice replied.
"Oh... Mr. Evans! Did you receive my e-mail?" I asked.
"Yes, Travis. The Society was very glad when they heard about it. I believe you have fixed the child's papers, and everything"
"Yes sir. Of course! I had Maurice do it." I told him.
"Good. I have to go now. I just wanted you to know about what they said. Bye." and the phone went dead. I knew that it was a yes. The Elite Society was very nice when it comes to adopting the uh... less fortunate.
I went to the living room and slumped on the sofa chair. Most probably Lily's asleep/playing dolls or something. It's four in the afternoon. If she's asleep she should wake-up... I close my eyes for a while and accidentally drift into sleep.
"mmm" I mumbled. My eyes opened and found a pair of oceanic blue eyes staring at me.
"We're here Travis" her sweet voice told me. I will myself to go out of the car. I squinted my eyes and rubbed my glasses before wearing them.
"Wow..." I exclaimed. Rows and rows of trees vast greenness and mountains. I have been fond of nature so is my dad. That's why we always take trips like this. My dad was grabbing our bags, giving it to me and my mom. I wore my backpack and started walking.
"Let's go" I exclaimed. Mom and dad lagged behind me while we were walking the whole time. We kept on walking until the sun was scorching hot. It got so hot that I sat down against my own will. I wiped my sweat with the back of my hand. We were at the top of the mountain but I wanted to get as far as I can. As usual. The wind blew cold air which was good. Despite the fact there was sun it was cool at the same time. Maybe I'm just tired. My mom chuckled behind. I looked at her and she was smiling her usual cheery self.
"Why don't we rest, T" my dad said. He sat at my left and my mom at my right. I hadn't realized that I've been panting until now. I rested my head on my dad's shoulder. They've been making small talk. I don't listen to them as usual. I always give my parents time to be a sweet couple. I closed my eyes.
Time passed and when I feel my eyes wanting to open again I feel something's different but who am I to know. I open it and saw my parents not by my side instead we're inside some sort of cave.
"Dad...?" I asked. My dad hushed me and said, "Don't talk" I nodded. I followed my mom and dad to the back of the cave until it was a dead end. Footsteps were growing louder with each step. I began to shake both with fear and some sort of courage. I looked around and found a piece of branch which was good enough for hitting someone I wrapped my fingers around it. The silhouettes appeared before us after what seemed like forever.
"I smell a fortune." a rough guy voice said. I moved backward when I felt as if the ground was moving. I looked behind and... oh boy...
2 feet below... my parents and I started running back to the car... The leaves rustled as we moved swiftly. The wind was dead cold unlike a while ago as if it's boding something. As we got to the car, we quickly climbed in. Dad reversed as fast and was at the highway again. He sped off. We were panting so hard I felt asthma coming.
"We lost them didn't we?" Mom asked dad. She held his hand which was gripping the gear hard enough to my his hand turn white. The way mom said it it was more of an assurance to herself rather than a question. I want to believe it. I want. I want to. I slowly looked behind when suddenly my dad...
"TRAVIS! DUCK!" I quickly obeyed. I loud crash erupted as the glass shattered. I shook badly as the car swerved. Mom yelled and quickly cried for fear.
"We'll be fine, ma" I told her. I hate it when my mom cries. It feels like the world is so evil. Dad accelerated. No matter how much we accelerate... Nothing will happen nothing...
The car lost control. The world became silent... so silent it was deafening.
"Travis, wake-up!"I was panting. A dream... the same dream... I sat up and looked around... an hour passed based on the clock above the flat screen TV.
Lily was wiping sweat from my forehead I took the towel from her and wiped it by myself.
"Did you have a nightmare?" she asked. I nodded.
"What was it about?" she asked. I stared at the wall. I haven't been dreaming for a while. Why now...
I looked at Lily and said, "I'll tell you before bed... promise" I told her. I stood up and walked to the kitchen and drank milk. Milk helps you feel better. Learned from my mom. I spat a shot of milk, accidentally. I gagged. I looked at Lily back at the living room, watching Spongebob. I wish... I didn't promise. I sighed.
Three light knocks on the door and I entered the pink wallpapered room. Ponies, dolls, and girly stuff were everywhere. No wonder I can't stand women… well, except for one. Never mind that. The lights were off except for the lampshade by the white side table beside Lily's bed.
"Travis!" she exclaimed. She was sitting on her bed, tucked in her blanket.
"Hey! You must've really been waiting for me" I replied. I walked over to her side and sat and tucked her down, making her lie down.
"Yep… I love stories!" she told me and yawned.
"Even if it's scary?" I asked her.
"Even if it's scary. In the streets scary stories were always told by the uh… old people"
"Mmm.." I placed my hand on my lap and said, "is that so… well, then" I told her my whole nightmare. She asks questions sometimes which I answer in a way she'd understand. Somehow she feels like my counselor back then, always asking questions. The difference though is that Lily doesn't ask annoying questions like 'How do you feel?' stuff like that.
Lily yawns for the nth time and says, "I'm getting sleepy…" I ran a hand through her hair.
"Oh… Good night then" I said, turned the lampshade off and walked to the door.
"Good night, brother Travis" I stopped mid-stride, stunned and continued walking out the door
Sorry if it's not that good of a chapter. I'll try better for the next one.
