Dark Spaces
humanity, II
—
I am not who you know.
the stars in our eyes
the heat from our hearts
the thunder in our ears—
as you see, we are not deaf, blind, or senseless.
And so, you must run
run faster
run farther
keep running
and leave a trail of lightning behind you
and when the highway ends, spread your wings
and when the sky meets the earth, leap
and swallow the sun
and let the moon tremble beneath your feet
and spread yourself into the dark spaces of the universe.
the stars in our eyes
(and when the highway ends, spread your wings
and let the sky wheel beneath your feet
and know that your ribs are the spiral arms of a galaxy)
we have set the world on fire for a hundred million years
and our trail of lightning is the length of the universe
and we have heard the drum of starlight,
formed from the pulse of a quasar,
beating fast and strong in our shadow
dust in the cosmic hand, extended
do you see?
it is the star in your eye
I am not who you know;
you see, that one went, long ago,
to the last dark spaces.
