Chapter 1

I'm beautiful in my way 'cause God makes no mistakes. I groaned as music blared in the living room. I placed my pillow over my head, hoping the music will quiet down. Sadly it only got louder. I'm on the right track baby, I was born this way! I groggily sat up and rubbed my eyes.

"Madi! It's like 7 in the morning! Will you turn the music down?! Aunt Tiana will totally flip if you wake her up so early!" I shrieked.

Madison is my cousin but she's like a sister I never had, literally. She always there when I have problems or just need someone to talk to whenever Nik is away. She has dark brown hair, strikingly green eyes, creamy complexion and she stands on a height of 5"9.

She snorted and turned the music up. "MADI!" I shrieked with all my might. She chose to ignore me and went back to dancing to "Born this Way" by Lady Gaga.

Feeling defeated, I went back to my room. No use in sleeping now. I sighed. I saw a picture of me and the King of Jerks when we were little. He draped his hand on my shoulder while we were smiling brightly. This was taken when our families went camping when we were 8 years old. This picture used to remind me about the incident that happen years ago.

"Christian! Help!" I shrieked while I struggled to stay afloat.

We sneaked away from our camp and did a little exploring around the place. Not really far away, we saw a river. The sky was getting greyer and I can tell that it's gonna rain soon.

"Come on Lia! Let's swim!" Christian said, while grabbing me by the arm.

"Uh, I'm not sure about this. It looks dangerous." I said, pointing to the strong current on the river.

He pouted. "Well, let's just remove our shoes and go knee-deep in the water, okay? It's nice and it's not dangerous." He said while kicking off his shoes. It then started to rain but it was only a small drizzle.

I nodded and removed mine also. We splashed at each other, laughing and squealing at the same time. Then after that Christian saw a fish and decided to chase it. We laughed but then Christian slipped on a rock and was carried by the river. I reached out to grab him and thank god, I got him in time.

But luck runs out, right? After grabbing him we decided to go back to camp. He got out of the water first and me, being the klutz I am, slipped and fell face-first in the water.

"Christian! HELP ME!" I shrieked as the water pulled me away from his reach. The wind and rain suddenly picked up, making it hard for us to hear each other.

When I glanced at my right, I saw five figures running along the river. I realized that it was Aunt Tiana, Uncle Bob, Madison and Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. The first thing that went through my mind was "How did they get here?" But I shrugged it off and was happy that they found us. They were yelling something about a tree branch. I didn't get what they meant when Madi pointed to the tree branch ahead of me.

I grabbed it with my free hand and used all my strength to make my way towards the edge of the river. Madi was the first one to reach me, holding out her hand. Just as I was about to take her hand, I didn't notice that I was heading towards a large rock. I let go of the branch and moved slightly to the right but the current was too strong. I howled in pain when the rock hit my left shoulder and slashed the shirt I was wearing. The slash was so intense that it cut the skin of my stomach.

The current of the river was getting stronger so I was in deep trouble. Water was evident in my lungs, making me cough. The bump and the scar didn't help too.

I wanted badly for this to end! A nightmare that I wouldn't want to live again. I felt so relieved when I saw an upcoming branch.

I reached out for the branch and held on it for my dear life. I tried making my way to the edge of the river but I was too tired and in too much pain to reach Uncle Bob's hand. More water splashed at my face, forcing me to swallow it.

I reached out my hand to him, causing me to wince in pain.

"Come on, Lia! Reach it!" Madi shouted, panic in her voice.

"I...I... can't…" I mumbled as I felt my eyelids droop.

"Lia! Stay awake! Don't give up!" Christian shouted, tears coming out of his eyes.

I used every ounce of strength I had left to reach for Uncle Bob's hand. I let go of the branch in order to do so. He pulled me out of the river with one strong move. He placed me flat on my back in land. I never knew that I'll miss the land so much. I coughed water out like crazy.

Aunt Tiana kneeled next to me, searching my body for any injury. She touched my scar on the stomach and I winced.

"Lia, are you okay?" Madi said, panic in her voice. I nodded at her and managed to give her a smile. Finally, tiredness took over me and I fell asleep.

Next thing I knew, I was covered up in bandages. I never thought that my right shoulder was bleeding as I felt bandages on it.

I saw that Christian was on my side, looking as if he was crying.

"Christian?" I said in a small voice. He looked up at me and smiled.

"Lia! I'm glad you're alright!" he said, kneeling down beside me. "I'm so sorry. It was my fault." He said, frowning. "Don't be. I'm just glad that I pulled you out of the water in the first place." I said, giving him a small smile. "Are you…mad at me?" he said. I shook my head. "Why will I be? You helped me to stay awake when I almost fainted. So, thank you." I said. He gave me a small smile and I fell back asleep.

Ever since then, I became hydro-phobic. I almost didn't want to take a shower, fearing that I might remember what happened. Since Aunt Tiana's a doctor, she tried to help me with it by a few tests and after that I started to use the shower again. But I will never, never go near creeks, beaches, rivers and the like ever again.

I shuddered at that thought. Why do I even have this picture? Music continues to play in the living room. Why the hell didn't Aunt Tiana scold her already?

"Madi! Where's Aunt Tiana?" I shouted over the music. She turned it down. That finally caught her attention. "Dad took her shopping since its Mother's Day. After that, they're gonna eat out." She said in a matter-of-factly tone.

Mother's Day? The thought stabbed her like a knife. Of course! How could I forget?! She heard Madi mumble an uh-oh and shot her an apologetic face. I walked back into my room, washed my face and brushed my teeth. After that, I combed my hair and went downstairs to eat breakfast.

Madison's POV:

"Sheesh! Me and my big mouth!" I mumbled, turning the music down. "Lia's now on one of those dazes of hers." I sighed, while grabbing some cereal. "Stupid, stupid!" I mentally kicked myself.

"Uh,oh. Here she comes." I inwardly groan. "Hey Lia! What do you want for breakfast?" I said in a bright, cheery tone. She muttered a hey and sat, grabbing her cereal.

She obviously doesn't want to talk. A voice in my head said. I shrugged it off and tried to start a conversation with her but all she does is to nod and shrug. I sighed and inwardly cursed at myself for bringing up that topic. After eating, Lia placed her plate on the sink and went back upstairs to her room muttering that she'll be in the shower.

"Curse me and my stupidity!" I said, after the door to Lia's room closed.

Alyson or Lia's POV:

I sighed loudly as I plopped into my bed. I just finished eating breakfast and was planning to take a shower but a few minutes rolling in bed wouldn't hurt, right? Today is Mother's Day. Too bad, I don't have a mother to celebrate it with. How I envy those with their mothers. I clutched my heart shaped locket my mother gave to me as a birthday present when I was 3 years old. Inside of it is our old family picture. Father, Mother, me and my brothers and sisters smiling brightly in the picture.

I wish we were always like this. I sighed and a familiar feeling started to swell up in my chest. A few tears started escaping from my eyes.

"Lia! Let's go to the mall, now!" Madi sang, barging into my room. Why didn't I lock that stupid door? I wiped the tears off of my face furiously. "You go. I'll just stay here." I muttered while going inside the shower. I heard Madi sigh and left.

After taking a shower, I tugged on my lilac tank top and a pair of shorts. I went downstairs and saw that Madi's car was not in the driveway. I sighed and plopped myself in the couch.

I started flipping through channels in the TV. Since there were no good shows, I decided to watch romantic movies. Yeah, I love romantic movies. So, what?

I watched my all-time favorite "Titanic".

I was already in the part where Jack was frozen to death and Rose letting him go when someone knocked on the door. I decided to ignore it and went to continue my crying when the knocking became louder. I sighed and paused the movie. "Stupid knock! Stupid door!" I muttered.

I opened the door and found Christian Johnson- my childhood friend and my best friend before standing in the door.

"What do you want?" I snapped.

"Were you crying?" he smirked, totally ignoring my first question.

"None of your business! Hurry up and tell me what are you doing here?!" I said, growing impatient.

"You're watching Titanic!" he said, while going inside.

What the hell?! He thinks he can just knock and go in while I'm in the middle of watching my favorite movie!?
