I wander the streets for hours. I have no idea where I am. I can't help but think, why? Why do I feel so bad when I wasn't into the relationship like she wasn't? How dumb could I possibly get?
"Max!" I jump and turn to see Oliver in a cab next to me.
"How did you find me?" I yell over the wind. I feel a raindrop fall on my head, and then it starts to pour.
Oliver looks at me funny. "You're right outside your apartment building. You started walking in circles muttering for about five minutes until I decided you freaked out the hobo's enough." He motions for me to get in the car. I hop in quickly, already wet to the bone. We drive for a while in silence.
"She didn't mean it." He sneaks a look at me. "She does love you, Max." I snort.
"Yeah, that's why she said it was you she loved." I sigh. "Why? Why did she stay with me when it was you she wanted?" His jaw locks.
"In high school my dad worked for hers. You could say we were kind of forced to become friends. I mean, she was alright, until our junior year. She announced that she was in love with me. That's when I came out to her. She refused to talk to me until about three years ago. We went to a block party and I saw you." He laughs bitterly. "I had been watching you all night, and she noticed. So, she walked up to you and I saw you were instantly charmed. I was so pissed, but I guess it was payback. But through the years you guys have been going out, she stopped breathing down my neck. I watched her fall in love with you, while I did the same every day at work. A couple of weeks ago, she found out that we talked. She thought up this whole threesome thing because she wanted me, yes, but only because she was scared. She was falling in love with you." I remain silent until I finally tell the driver to stop in front of my building. Memories were flying at me.
I ditched my friend and went to the block party by myself, because I'd rather do that than stay home with him drunk. I walked around, talking to people that I knew from school. I went to buy a hotdog and I saw this girl making her way over to me. What captured my eye, however, was the guy she was just with. Did I know him? I could barley take my eyes off him, wondering how long it would take for me to get him to come home with me. I force myself to look at the girl in front of me
"Hey. I'm Tasha." The girl said. I smile.
"Hey. My name's Max"
"That night I saw you. I wanted you. But when Tasha came up to me, I thought, 'Wow, here is this girl willing to go out with me. One I will be able to show my parents without being called a fairy.' I mean, I never knew that that guy that night was you, but…I wish it was you who came up to me instead of her." I turn to face him. "I can't help but wonder how different my life would be then." He looks at me and smiles.
"Remember the first time we officially met?" He asks. I smile at the memory.
"Hey, you're the new guy, right?" I turn around to see an attractive man standing next to my desk.
"Yes I am. Name's Max." I stick out my hand. I suppress the shiver that I feel when his handshakes mine. I also can't stop smiling. He grins, and I pull my hand back, wiping it on my pants and clear my throat.
"You can call me Jackson." I frown.
"What does everyone else call you?" I can't help but feel excited that I will be one of the few to call him by a different name.
"It's not important. Just know that you are the only one who I allow to call me that." I frown again.
"Why? Sorry, but we just met. Isn't that a little…creepy?" he chuckles.
"Not at all."
I place an arm around him.
"You kind of freaked me out and excited me at the same time." I tell the shorter man.
"I know, I guess I did come up a bit strong at first. But, I was so excited to have met you. It was like I found my wet dream sitting in a desk at my paper."
I laugh loudly. "Let's go before we spend all our money on this cab." We both get out and I pay the driver, much to Oliver's discomfort.
"How about we take the train to your place?" I suggest. He smiles and kisses me, making me forget about Tasha and her issues.
"Let's go."
