Prologue

I could see the smoke raising up from the vents, thick, harsh, and consuming the room in a lung burning sent. Estimating, there was probably six more minuets left before it completely submerged the rest of this building in an ashy black and grey cloud. Suffocating. Heart racing. There was a considerable chance I could fall through the creaking floor at any second if I stayed here any longer. Tapping my foot I had to wait until I heard it, couldn't take a step with out knowing I was close to being caught. I wanted to be caught, wanted him to know I did it, I did this.

Still, getting caught would only make matters worse and the fact that I knew this but didn't care said a lot about myself. Maybe this fact should scare me, but it only made my head rush in excitement. Blood boiling exhilaration. In any other case this excitement would make me elated but instead I was surrounded with red hot anger, so much so that I could hardly breath.

"Weee-uuu-Weee-uuu" I could finally hear the sound of a siren heading closer to where I was. Taking a breath, I ran to the window, threw my legs over onto the fire escape and skipped stairs as I ran down. Huffing, when I felt gravel under my feet I tore off into one of the many alley ways behind the compartment buildings. The one that would give me the best view and fastest escape route if something went wrong. A broken fence wasn't to far off behind me that would allow me to easily squeeze through into the dark street beyond it.

I made sure no one had seen me runaway before stepping out a bit from the cover of the alley to gaze at my handy work. Standing ahead of me stood the empty building I buried all my blood, sweat and tears in.

On fire.

It was so hot I felt it on my skin.

The firetrucks lights were now visible bouncing off the corners of the building where they were no doubt, just pulling up. The sirens were loud enough and the fire was bright enough to know that it would take a long time before they would get it out. A lot of water, a lot of work, to put down what I put up in ten minuets.

Taking off my gloves I stuffed them into the portable fuel tank and threw them both into the dumpster – though not before pulling on another pair of leather gloves. I zipped my jacket up and pulled on my hood. I stood there in the shadows and savoured it.

The sound of a match being struck went of behind me and the low glow of light illuminated the walls before disappearing. I slowly turned around – heart in my throat – to see a guy leaning on the wall with his left foot up, raising a newly lite cigarette to his lips and licking them, before dragging out a long deep pull of smoke.

I couldn't even move. I was dumbfounded that he was there... he couldn't have been there a minuet ago. Could he? Why the hell didn't I see him before. Maybe because you were to busy looking at the fire you started instead of running away and staying away. No shit. No fucking way.

We stood there, staring at each other. I don't know what was worst, the fact that I didn't cover my tracks thoroughly or him leaning there on the wall. Nonchalant. Some freaking stranger had me caught.

His grey eyes looked me over as he blew the smoke from his lips. His grey eyes looked me over as he blew the smoke from his lips. I finally took my eyes away from him to look him over as he was doing me. There were other cigarettes burnt to the bud on the floor, scattered around him, showing how long he'd been there. He was wearing a dark grey v-neck shirt above his low slung black jeans. The tips of his black boxers just barely pecking out and his feet were clad in blue converse. I couldn't see his face to know his exact age but he couldn't be that much older than I was. Ether fresh out of high school or still in it like me.

A sudden movement had my eyes snapped back to his. He nodded. Just like that, like nothing was wrong. That simple tipping of his head had me slowly inching past him, eyes still held locked together, and when I felt like I was far enough. I ran.

Over the abandoned couch, jumped onto the low wall, and pushed through the broken fence.
