Chapter 14

"Well, that was interesting."

It was dark. I didn't know where I was or how I came to be there. But I recognized that voice—Malachi.

"Anna, oh Anna," he said, drawing out my name. "Can you hear me?" The voice was silent, waiting for me to respond.

"You are certainly ambitious. Most people would have aimed for something far less spectacular," he sounded amused. "But what it implies about your potential—is promising."

I couldn't find my voice. My body—if there was one—was strangely buoyant, like I was floating, spinning. There were dim silhouettes, ephemeral phantoms that danced around me. I tried to move but my arms and legs were distant and did not respond.

"But what are you doing so close to Lothern? What are the princeling and his merry band up to, hm?"

"I—" I tried to speak. The sound of my breathing echoed around me.

"Shh, it's okay. Go back to sleep, darling. The answers can wait; I'm in no hurry," he said. "Go back to sleep."

His voice became quieter, fading, muffled by the blackness. Then, silence.

A/N: Just a quick note everyone. I have revised the end of Chapter 13 and recommend you check out the changes I made in anticipation of the next chapter, which will be posted in a few days. I apologize for this chapter's short length-Chapter 15 is quite long, and I needed to divide it somehow. Thank you for reading and reviewing!
