Secrets Of The Past

By Calvin Westbrook

Almost as if someone had opened the window on a cold winter's afternoon, a breeze began to pour around the room. It was light at first, but with each step that Jason took, the effect of the natural phenomenon seemed to increase. It was almost as if nature itself were testing if he was ready to discover the secret of Ignatius's study.

As soon as he touched the doorknob, Jason felt a warm vibration coming from it like the kind you get from an electric toothbrush. He tried to turn the sculpted piece of metal but as it had been every time he had tried before, it didn't move.

He heard footsteps coming from behind him, but Jason ignored them and began to look around the area of the door, maybe he had missed something when he looked the previous morning.

"When are you going to give up and realise he was just suffering from dementure?" came Paige's voice.

Jason considered her words for a moment. She could have been right, but his guardian for so many years had to have left something for him, and he would be damned if wasn't going to find it.

"Dr Cromwell may have been many things, but he was not demented" he said with a hint of annoyance.

Paige ignored the hint of resentment she sensed. She knew from her own experience that grief made a person very susceptible to being blinded to reason.

"But something hidden in a study that you can't even open? Come on, isn't that just a little bit hard to believe?"

Jason reached into his pocket and pulled out the scrawl that had been hidden in the pocket of the will. He reread the passage over and over again, trying to find some meaning to them.
