Chapter 12
Light Shining Through
Same Day
I screamed bloody murder. If I were an X-Man then the windows and every other thing in the room would have shattered into a million pieces already. Nicholas's hand still held mine in a limp grasp. I struggled to move closer to his face. "Nicholas! Nicholas wake up!" I lightly slapped his cheeks. "Nicholas!" His head lolled to the side as I tried to get him to wake up again. "Nicholas!" I had screamed so loud that I hadn't noticed the heart monitor had gone back to normal.
"Kaylia!" I looked at the door and started yelling random things. The nurse was moving me away and yelling at some woman in the hall. I was trying to scream Nicholas into consciousness, but as all hysterical women know, that doesn't work too well. "Kaylia we need you to leave now!"
"No! Nicholas!" I was forced out of the room. I screamed, and tried to hold onto the edge of the doorway. The strong intern pried my fingers away though.
"He's stable!" I felt my body be carried to the other side of the hall. I was pounding on the interns back, and he kept saying things in that soft voice. I hiccupped and sniffled. I heard a door open, and I was set down in a chair. I wiped my eyes and felt my body shake with tears.
"I know. I know. He's going to be okay. It's going to be alright." I felt small circles be rubbed on my back as I tried to stop crying. I hiccupped again, and wiped my tears away again. "He's going to be okay. Come on, let's get you to bed. You've had a long day." I sniffled. "I promise I'll wake you if anything changes." With that, I let him put me back into my hospital bed.
August 11, 2011
It had been a week. Nicholas was still out cold. Apparently he had a sudden increase in brain activity, but that doesn't really mean anything to me. He still twitched his fingers though, and I guess that had to be good. I mean the last time he twitched he woke up.
I was going to start physical therapy today. However, it was Danny's funeral. Maple had bought me a black dress. She even helped me clean up for it. I was pushed to the car where the funeral had been set up. In the car there was silence. Maple didn't even try to start a conversation. I watched trees blur into colors. The car stopped in front of a beautiful garden.
There were two rose bushes near the black iron gate. In the black, slightly rusted, iron it read "Massey." There was a small walkway that lead to the center of the garden. A tombstone laid there. A tent was set up over it, and I heard the distant rumble of thunder. Maple rolled my wheelchair closer and closer to the grave marker.
"Hello. You must be Kaylia." A sad voice said next to me. I looked at the woman. She was tall, and had her black hair pulled back into a harsh bun. She wore a typical black dress with a black veil. She was of Chinese and Korean decent. Danny's eyes were reflected in hers. "I'm Daniel's mother, Rebecca Massey." She held out her hand, and I shook it politely.
"I'm Kaylia...no last name. I'm sorry for your loss." Mrs. Massey smiled one of those bittersweet smiles, and then dabbed her eyes. "This is a beautiful garden. He would have liked it here." I commented. She nodded sadly, and then cleared her throat.
"Well Ms. Kaylia it was nice to meet you."
"It was nice to meet you too Mrs. Massey." With that she left to greet other people. I was rolled to where I would sit for the service. It was in the front row...right next to his parents. Oh god this was going to be hard.
The service started. The preacher was saying words, and Mrs. Massey was already dabbing her eyes. She held onto her husband's arm, and then tried to stop crying. Mr. Massey tried to hide his tears, but wasn't really doing good at it. I felt some tissues be pressed into my hand, and I realized I was crying. I couldn't look away from the casket after I saw it. It was small, and the only thing I could think about was his body there...lifeless. Dead.
"Daniel was a very lively boy. He was never sitting still for long. Even after his unfortunate diagnosis, he was still playing sports and hitting on girls." I heard a small choke behind me. I looked back.
Tammy's red hair was clipped back. She held a small teddy bear in her lap. Her face was buried in it's fur. Her feet didn't even touch the ground. I felt more tears escape my eyes. She lifted her head and saw me. She had that really bad look you get when you cry really hard. Her eyes were all puffy, and snot was coming out of her nose. Her mom, I'm guessing, picked her up and moved away from the funeral.
I clicked the lock on my wheelchair, and rolled myself out of the ceremony. I heard the thunder grow louder. I rolled faster, and saw Tammy hugging her mom. Soft cooing noises were drowned out by the roaring thunder. I rolled closer. "Tammy!" I called out. She looked over at me and sniffled.
"Tammy I have to talk to you." She wiped her eyes hard and I watched as she took a tissue from her mother. I looked at her mom in a silent question of permission. She nodded and I took Tammy's hands. "Tammy-"
"You...you were there...and I... I wasn't..." She started to cry harder.
"Oh Tammy there was no way you could have known."
"I told him...I told him I'd b-b-b-be t-t-there."
"Tammy you were there. Right in his heart. That whole time I was there he was talking about you, and how much he likes you."
"I like Danny too..." She whispered softly.
"I know." I was doing everything to not fall on the ground crying like crazy.
"I really really liked Danny...I miss him."
"I know honey. I miss him too. I bet he's here though. He's going to watch over us."
"How?"
"Well you see those clouds?" I asked pointing at the storm clouds in the distance. "He's up above them. See he asked the clouds to make it storm really bad so that all of us down here would know he made it up to heaven." I looked over and saw Tammy's mom crying openly. She was listening to all the things I was saying. "See Danny knew that if he made it sunny that would be too normal." I choked on my words. "So he asked the clouds to make it storm, and if you closely then you can see his light shining through the black clouds." Tammy was looking at the clouds with her puffy red eyes.
"Thank you Lili."
"Come here silly goose." I said with a stupidly ugly smile on my face. I must have looked just as bad because I bet that by this time my eyes were already red and my face probably had snot running down my nose. Whatever horrors laid on my face, Tammy didn't notice or care because she was hugging me right after the words came out of my mouth.
