OKay! ...
This is Kallen's story. If you've read The Coming of Prince Garreth, this will probably clear some things up, if you were confused about points in the 'first' story. There are a couple Inconsistencies, because I made changes; minor things really. Like, location, linage... That kind of thing.
Please note, I can't promise how often I'll be updating this one, since I've already started to neglect Blood Sweat and Tears; life catches up to you unfortunately. But when I get the chance there will be updates, I promise.
Chapter 1
Kallen Artix McCloud walked the marketplace. All about him male and female demons milled about from stall to stall. A top a hill in the distance was a castle standing tall and impressive. The roof was black and the brick a dark grey, giving it an imposing sensation, but the pristine windows sparkled in the sunlight. The Castle was named after the King's grandfather's, grandfather's father, Lord Chaos. The castle had been the sight of a great battle, when Lord Chaos had tried to take over the different Demon Providences. The Demon King had been brought down in battle and the Demon King's eldest son, Alexander, was appointed to King.
Alexander did what he could to restore the boarders, but without records of the original state that the providences were in, rumours had flown that Alexander currently possessed more land than he originally had. But soon, the boarder disagreements ended and things settled down...
Within the outer walls of the castle was a large courtyard. A stable and an enclosure for the horses to walk and graze freely was located on one side of the courtyard, while on the other side was a large blacksmith's forge. Within the center of the castle, there was a second courtyard, the Queens private garden. A Gazebo sat within the center, with stone benches littering the area. There were a number of trees growing tall, and the flowers were Queen Raven's most favourite flowers.
How did Kallen know this? Kallen was the first born of fives sons to King Artix, Azreal's youngest son. So, what was Kallen doing, walking around the Marketplace, and no one realized who he was? He was under cover as a commoner.
Suddenly, Kallen stumbled forward. Catching his balance, Kallen spun around, and glared into the same golden amber eyes as his own. Atop Kallen's head was a hood, which allowed Kallen's tall pointed horns. They were curved at the base and spiraled upward until the base which then became almost marble smooth. "What are you doing?"
The face before him, smiled before it was pushed back. The golden amber eyes, was matched with platinum hair. The male had a set of curved ribbed horns that circled around his ears, the tips ending parallel to his temples. "You're walking like a lord," he answered.
"I wonder why Garreth!" Kallen answer, growling softly. "This idea of yours is foolish! We should be back in the castle, studying, learning the inns and outs of politics. Rules and regulations! Not down here, trying to blend in with the common folk."
"Actually it's you that needs to learn that," Garreth answered, turning Kallen around, draping an arm over his shoulder. "Seriously Kallen, our brothers have ditched their lessons, even Marik. I'm tired of watching your boring ass. At least our cousin Lukius has a more entertaining time watching over Allen."
"You just couldn't handle being locked in the study any longer," Kallen commented dryly. "You could've left me in the castle. I would've been safe."
"But that would've be shrinking my job," Garreth answered, with a wide grin on his face.
As they walked, a few women would cry out, waving at the pair greeting Garreth, asking whom his friend was. All Garreth did was wave back, and kept walking making it seem like he was in a rush and couldn't stop to talk and answer questions.
"Besides, you needed a break," Garreth spoke, sighing softly. "What kind of King would you be, if you didn't know what it was like in the life of an every-day demon?"
"I've got you for that," Kallen answered, rolling his eyes. But Kallen's brother had a point. He would not know how how help his people if he didn't know how they lived day-to-day.
Seeing how Kallen seemed to understand Garreth's thinking, the younger brother said nothing, until they passed a stall, which halted his progress. To make sure Kallen didn't keep walking, Garreth kept his hand on his brother's shoulder, which pulled him backward.
"Check it out," Garreth said pointing. "Are those mom's favourite treat?"
"Chocolate covered coffee beans?" Kallen answered frowning. "Smells like it."
Together the two walked forward, to found out the exotic food was indeed their mother's favourite.
It was not often that coffee beans were brought to the central province. The coffee beans came from a jungle island, to the eastern providence. The inhabitants weren't very welcoming of outsiders, so managing to get coffee beans was rather difficult. The cocoa beans were a different story. While Chaos castle was located closer to the northern boarder, the coca beans grew further south, both wild and within special farms.
"Are you two interested?" the merchant, a elder male demon beamed at them. The merchant had salt and pepper hair, and his horns were weakening, large cracks and missing tips obvious.
"Yes," Kallen answered, looking over the products that the old merchant had. There were dried and fresh fruit, what looked like taffy of some kind and other sweets. "How much for the covered coffee beans?"
"How much you want?" The merchant asked, looking between the two men.
"Just a moment," Kallen answered, as the brothers faced each other, huddling together, to whisper.
"Lets get a whole bag," Garreth suggested. "Its not like mom would eat the whole thing in one go."
"That's a bit much," Kallen replied. "Maybe a pound instead?"
"When was the last time we seen mom have chocolate covered coffee beans?"
Pausing a moment, Kallen frowned. "It was before Allen was born, maybe after."
"Exactly" Garreth answered with a smile, turning around. "We'll take a whole bag!"
The merchant blinked surprised. "Are you sure? That's... a lot of gold."
"We're sure," Kallen answered, smiling. "So, how much?"
"Twenty-five gold sirs," The merchant answered, leaning under the stall and pulled out a large bag. Kallen dropped the coins into the counter as Garreth hefted the bag over his shoulder.
"That's actually pretty decent." Garreth answered, adjusting his cargo until he was comfortable. "The chocolate from one of the farms?"
The merchant nodded, "It does bring the cost down a bit."
"Mom also prefers farmed chocolate, less bitter," Kallen commented, as they both bid the merchant a farewell and continued on their way.
As the day worn on, the two demon princes decided that it was time to head back to the castle. On their way out, they heard a voice crying out.
"Slaves on Sale!" The voice was female, and it caught the brothers' attention and they walked towards the voice.
The woman stood atop a raised wooden plate form. There was a large patchwork curtain partitioning off the other half of the stage. The woman had reddish coloured skin, with dark brown hair, her eyes a dull green. She had feminine horns that followed the curve of her head, that was so smooth is reflected the sunlight.
"Step up lords and ladies!" the woman called out, waving her hands, gesturing people closer. "My slaves are top quality! All my girls have horns, and my men are strong and well muscled; perfect for hard labor!"
"Ujana," Garreth growled deeply, causing a few people to look over their shoulders at him. "I thought her permit ran out to sell here?"
"Not yet," Kallen answered, crossing his arms. "Its up soon though. I've tried to convince father to ban her, like the northern province had. But it's hard to get something like that passed, so he's trying to delay her papers to renew her permits."
"At least its a start," Garreth answered, his nails lengthening into claws as his horns became so smooth, the tips of his horns caught the sunlight. Kallen just nodded in agreement.
The brothers stood side by side, as they watched the parade of males and females, Ujana calling out bits of information about the product. At one point, a beautiful female stepped into the middle of the stage, her hair seemed to have been made of woven gold and practically glowed in the mid-afternoon sunshine. Her eyes sparkled like emeralds and seemed to glow just like her hair. The sight of the female seemed to stop Kallen's heart.
"Talk about a beauty!" came a voice from behind the two. At the same time, Garreth and Kallen turned around, to stare at a young man, his hair was the same platinum as Garreth's but his eyes were dark blue in colour.
"Allen," the brothers spoke together.
"Brothers" Allen answered with a wide green. "Honestly, if father hadn't put a cap on my females, I'd place a bid on her, or pay the full price."
Kallen growled, a sound rather unusual for the eldest brother, since growling wasn't dignified for a King, or the crowned prince. "Even if father hadn't put a cap on you, I'd make sure you didn't buy her."
"Oh-ho..." Allen smirked, his dark blue eyes sparkling with mischief. "Do you want her for yourself, Kally?"
"No!" Kallen snapped, stepping up to his brother. "And if you call me that again... Well, I won't retain my crown any longer. Do you understand me?"
Garreth blinked, rather impressed with his brother. It wasn't often that Kallen threatened anyone, especially his own family. It was obvious though, that Kallen was drawn to the woman on the stage.
Looking in that direction, Garreth realized that the female had horns, that curved a long the side of her head, the tips ending parallel from her earlobe, and seemed to be made from ivory; and she wasn't being bought out? Well, the female did look a little sickly, but that could be from lack of food.
"What are you thinking?" was the question is Garreth's ear. The sound was soft like velvet. Looking over his shoulder, Garreth seen golden amber, much like is own.
"That, maybe Ujana has a few to many females," Garreth answered. "Are you going to stop me cousin, or help me?"
"I think I will stay out of it," Lukius answered leaning away, his arms crossed. "Though, tonight, I have a shift to patrol the city, I'll be sure to keep my eye on you to make sure you don't get into trouble."
Lukius looked much like Kallen. When they were younger, and their horns having yet reached full development, they had been mistaken for each other. Now, the thing that set them apart the most was the fact that Lukius' horns curved backwards, instead of inward like Kallen's horns. Lukius' father had died in battle, leaving his cousins' father as King. There had been a debate, that Lukius was the rightful future King, but as the two got older and the right of passage and naming the crowed prince came closer, Lukius rejected the crown, giving it to Kallen, wanting to be a solider, and not a noble.
Garreth smirked and nodded. "I appreciate it."
"Garret! Lukius!" Kallen called, causing the pair to look up. Kallen and Allen were near the gates that lead up towards the castle. "We're ready to go! Hurry up!"
They both raised their hand; Lukius reached out grabbing the bag of chocolate covered coffee beans off Garreth's shoulder to give him a break. Together the four of them walked back towards their home.
