It had been so long since the young man had laid down on this field and felt the soft grass beneath his back. The ground was a little damp, but he didn't mind. He had forgotten what it was like to simply relax. Life and all its happenings were quite tiring. It was so comfortable, just lying down and forgetting his problems for a while. He thought he might just fall asleep.
The young man's fingers gingerly curled around the greenery under his hand and he closed his eyes, taking in every feeling as best he could. His fingers caressed the blades of grass that tickled his palm. Their normally coarse texture was made smooth by the dampness clinging to the ground. The grass felt so delicate under his touch, yet he knew the green was hearty. Still, however, he prayed the green would remain; nothing in the world is safe from destruction.
The young man tiredly opened his eyes and stared up at the endless blue expanse. The sky would remain forever though. Humans as a race may touch the sky, but it would remain. The young man cleared his mind of sentimental thoughts. He just wanted to enjoy the moment, gazing at the azure. A few tufts of clouds floated above him, slowly pushed along by a chilly breeze. The young man never realized how beautiful the sky was. It was a shame, he thought, that he had never been mindful of that before but at least now he was.
Just how long ago was it that he had last laid down here? The young man was not quite sure, but all he knew was that it had been years, many years. He had forgotten what it was like to be at peace without a care in the world. The young man's eyelids drooped. The feel of the grass and the wind and the thoughts of peace lulled his mind into calmness. Yes, it would be nice to sleep here. His life had been tiring and he thought he deserved some rest.
Yes, it was time to take a rest. The young man closed his eyes and tuned out whatever unpleasant thing was around him. He tuned out the feel of the crimson liquid that flowed out of his body and moistened the ground. He tuned out the sound of gunfire and the thunder of explosions. He tuned out the shouts of other men who were dying or pressing on. Soon the young man found peace. And so the young man fell to sleep on the rolling, green field.
