Chapter 5
It was already Monday. The weekend flew by like it never even happened. Vicki was acting normal, so I didn't think she'd accepted it yet. I can still catch her looking around sometimes, and then she seems saddened for a while.
"I'll see you after school, mom!" She shouted as she ran out the door, like every morning.
"Don't forget to eat lunch!" I shouted, though I knew she was already out the door. I waved at her as I got into the truck and drove to the elementary school.
"Good morning class," I said, getting everyone's attention.
"Good morning, !" They all shouted.
I taught them a bit of math on the board and passed out a worksheet for them to do. On my way to my desk, I realized that I forgot my teachers' handbook in my nightstand at the house.
"Reina, would you mind getting me the teachers' handbook from the supply closet?" I asked the class helper. It's a good thing that all the teachers have extras.
"Okay, ," she said as she happily skipped to closet and opened the door.
The supply closet was in a corner of the room, in sight of the rest of the room, but around the corner from my desk. As I sat down at my desk to gather some papers, I heard a blood-curdling scream, the kind only in cheesy horror movies.
I jumped up from behind my desk and ran to the closet, telling the class to calmly wait outside the classroom door.
"What is it, Rei-…oh my god," I said, my eyes the size of saucers, "Naomi…"
There was Naomi, lying on the floor in a pool of dried blood. She had a long cut from her temple, down the right side of her face, down to her collarbone. There were several stab wounds in her stomach. She was in a Winnie the Pooh T-shirt and jean shorts down to her knees. From what I could see of her legs, they were also badly cut and bruised. I could see faint hands marks on her neck, and… were those little wet spots on her shirt? It looked as though water droplets had landed on her.
I felt something grip the leg of my jeans, waking me from my stupor. I looked down, seeing Reina staring at the corpse with tears of fear rolling down her cheeks.
"It's okay sweetie, let's go outside with the rest of the class. I'm going to make a call to the friendly policemen, but I want you to stay with me, okay?" I asked, trying hard not to break down in front of the little girl.
"O-okay," she said quietly, letting me carry her on my side with one arm wrapped around the little girl.
I gingerly shut the door and called the main office of the school.
"Yes, Phoebe?" said the secretary, Julie.
"Julie, I think you should call the police and evacuate the school, soon if you can," I tried to speak calmly to not worry the girl I was carrying.
"I understand, I'll call them immediately," she said in a hurried tone, hanging up quickly.
A few seconds later, I heard the alarm signaling that everyone needed to go out to the field. All the classes lined up, and I had one of the other teachers supervise my class while I talked to the police.
"You can stay with me, okay, sweetie?" I told Reina. She was still shaking, but she nodded her head in response. "I think the nice police would like to talk to you."
"Okay, Ms. Quinn," She said into my shoulder, burying her face.
"Ma'am, could you show us where the 'problem' is?" said Officer Jones, the chief policeman.
"Yes, she's in my supply closet in room 12, I can take you to the room and unlock the door. The closet is unlocked. I don't think I should go in there with Reina, and I think she could use my company right now," I told Jones.
I led him to the room and he went in with the investigators and the people who carry cadavers off of crime scenes, I can't remember what they're called. Jones came out a few minutes later, a grimace on his face.
"I'll be right back. Reina's mom is here and I want to deliver her," I said, turning to the parking lot and walking away.
I apologized to Reina's mom, and she understood. Heather, Reina's mom, used to be a good friend of mine. She still is, but we don't hang out that much. I went back to Officer Jones, who was talking to an investigator.
"She's been dead for a few days. Looks like since Friday. Does anyone come to mind that might want to do this? It's pretty obvious that this is a murder. Probably an aggressive one, according to all those stab wounds."
"No, not at all. I don't know who could have done this, everyone knows each other and none of us are murderers," I said, still initially shocked.
"Well, we aren't looking that way now. Let me know if you think of anybody, Phoebe," Jones said as he walked to his police cruiser and drove off to the station.
