i watched my dragon curl into a ball atop his mound of treasure;
his ebony scales glittering in the firelight.
his slow, heavy breathing comforted me and
i, too, longed to sleep safely.

the mighty beast had once promised to defend me,
though i felt that even the greatest protection would not suffice.
even in his presence i did not feel secure.

i wished to lift the scales upon his breast and crawl inside his pounding heart.
but that breast was a weak point that even i not dare touch.

i drew my knees and wrapped my arms around them,
curling up in the entrance of my dragon's cave.

the beast had once promised my protection,
but i did the safekeeping more often than he.
