I Took The Backroads (Setting Sun)

I took the backroads leading nowhere

Hoping I could find my something more.

And goodness knows I haven't found it yet,

but what the heck did you expect

from such a water down and burned out soul?

I took the cobblestones I knew 'em well,

You know the ones that hide behind that crooked hill

And from the tale of jill and jack

I should've seen it coming that

I might break my fragile crown as well.

Well I can't tell you quite where I'm wandering.

Am I running to or running from?

I'll find it 'neath an apple tree

beside the hazy acid see

in a quite town they call the Setting Sun.

I've seen landscapes of children's tales

and I've seen faces painted long ago.

'Tween heaven and hell I've seen that place

where cosmic earth meets earthly space

and moon and stars are hanging 'midst the show.

I took the backroads through all human history

hoping I might find someone I know.

I met the frozen tired souls

that only dream of rock and roll

and those who pray for those who lay below.

And I can't tell you quite where I'm wandering

and I can't say for sure that I'm not done

Where grass is greener than can be

and people sit beside that sea

that washes up unto the Setting Sun.

Pillars made of ancient stone

Coca-cola signs I know-

They're as human as you and I.

Wire fences to resist

and pray to God that God exists

and pray again that my fence won't unwind.

Please don't give if you're not asked,

take this friendship make it last-

I promise you my fence is not quite done.

All I need's a place called home

someplace I can all my own

and that might be the town of Setting Sun!

I can't tell you quite where I'm wandering,

Am I running to or running from?

Where grass is greener than can be

And people eat from apple trees

That grow and bloom under the Setting Sun.

Where grass is greener than can be

Is that the place that's meant for me?

That quite town they call the Setting Sun?
