If we could only have this life
For one more day
If we could only turn back time

I laugh as Caroline places some ice cream on my face and giggles. Her shiny caramel hair is blown back by the sea breeze coming from the beach to our right. The sun is out and everything is perfect.

"Thanks, now you're gonna help me get it off," I replied, tugging her into my arms and holding her close to me. Her big blue eyes look up at me for a moment before she stands on her tip toes and licks the treat off of my face.

"Better?" she asks playfully. I nodded my head and leaned down to kiss her gently on the lips. Of course, she tasted like chocolate ice cream and I savored it.

"I love you," I whisper against her lips. She smiles and replies, "Yeah? Well, I love you more."

"Psh, that's not possible, Caroline."

"Actually, Aiden, I think it is." Her smile faded as her eyes got more intense. It was hard to believe such a small, sweet girl underwent and survived therapy for Leukemia. I was with her that whole time and I only loved her more.

"What?" I asked.

"Will you always love me, no matter what happens? Even if I do something completely selfish?"

"You're not going to commit a homicide, are you?" I joked. She just shook her head.

"I'm serious."

"Of course I will. I can't believe that you'd have any doubt in your mind about that." I pushed a lock of hair behind her ear and smiled.

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why do you make things so difficult. Why do you have to be so perfect?" A tear slid from her eye. I brushed it away, a bit confused.

"What do you mean? What's difficult?"

"Nothing. Never mind. Forget I said anything." I furrowed my eyebrows in worry as her face went from happy and lighthearted to somber in a matter of minutes. I took her hand and kissed it gently.

"Alright. Ready to go?"

"Go where? There's more than ice cream and a walk?"

"Of course! It was today, last year, that you were cured! We have t o celebrate it together! I've been planning this for over a month!" My face lit up at the thought of what was going to happen next. I'd been waiting for forever to show her this.

"Aiden…"

"Come on!" I tugged her forward and we made our way down the dock once again. Anxiety was building up in me with each step, but so was my smile.

We walked for about five minutes as the sun began to set over the water and the sky bled red, yellow, and pink.

We crossed a street into a little, secluded neighborhood that was still facing the beach. I squeezed her hand tighter and tighter as we got closer to our destination. On her face was a small smile and she just kept her eyes on me the entire time.

"Okay, now you have to close your eyes, love. I'll tell you when to open, okay?"

"Okay, I'm trusting you." I kissed her forehead as her eyes shut and I led her forward. Through a few more trees and up a gravel pathway, we kept walking. Then we stood before it.

I let go of her hand walked around so my chest was pressed against her back. Wrapping my arms around her waist I whispered in her ear, "Open."
