Chapter One: As Fate Would Have It
"What's your name, dear?" the woman behind the desk asked me.
"Uh, Maddy Fenning," I replied. Yep, that's me, good ol' Maddy. It was my first day at Forest Heights High School after my dad got transferred halfway through the school year.
"Alright Maddy, here's your schedule, if you'll just take a seat over there I'll have one of the Leadership students show you around the school," the lady said, ushering me over to the chairs. I sat down beside a guy with light brown hair who was fidgeting with his headphones and tapping his foot up and down.
After a couple minutes a girl walked into the office and the lady at the front desk pointed over at the chairs. The girl flashed me a giant grin and literally skipped over.
"Maddy and Lyndon? My name is Deanna, I'll be showing you around today!" she squeaked. "Have you two had a chance to introduce yourselves yet? Since it's your first day here and all."
"Well I was taught not to talk to strangers," I mumbled. I swear this girl had a perma-grin, she looked like a wild animal, moving her head back and forth between the two of us.
"What was that Maddy?" she asked in her high pitched voice.
"We haven't met yet," the boy said, turning to me. "I'm Lyndon Jacobs." he stretched out his hand and waited for me to shake it.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Maddy Fenning," I replied, shaking his hand. I really did not approve of meeting new people, I tended to be overly sarcastic to the point where they usually just walked away from me before I could turn into a lunatic. Unfortunately for Lyndon, he really didn't have that option since we were going to be taking the tour together.
"If y'all will just follow me, we'll get the tour started!" Deanna chirped. We followed behind her as she led us out of the office.
"So that was the office," she said, pointing behind us.
"Really?" I asked. She nodded happily at me. "Oh man, I seriously thought I was aboard the Starship Enterprise," I said with astonishment.
"What?" she said, clearly confused, yet still keeping a smile on her face.
"Now that I look a little harder, you really don't resemble Spock at all, he has a much nicer complexion," I said, stepping closer to her to examine her face. Lyndon started laughing at what I was saying while Deanna just looked to be a tad bit frightened for her life.
"Um, Maddy? C-Can we continue with the tour, I feel awfully confused," Deanna whimpered. I smiled and nodded back at her.
"What ever you say Jar Jar," I said, saluting her. Lyndon looked over at me with a small smirk. I winked back at him and laughed a little bit.
Once the tour was over, Deanna invited us to join the Leadership Club before scurrying off to wherever it was that she came from.
"So, are you going to join Leadership?" Lyndon asked after she left.
"I would rather eat a month old sandwich off the bedroom floor of a male adolescent," I said, shaking my head. "How about you, don't you just feel the need to lead people who don't want to be lead?"
"Never in a million years, I'm not the type to get involved with stuff," Lyndon said. I nodded my head in agreement and pulled out my schedule. "What class do you have first?" he asked.
"U.S. History, how about you?" I asked, looking over at his schedule.
"Same," he said. "Wanna walk together?" he offered. I nodded and we headed towards the humanities wing to find our classroom. We miraculously made it on time and sat together at the back of the classroom.
Lyndon seemed like a pretty chill dude, I was happy that I had found someone to talk to so quickly. Also, he got brownie points for understanding my sarcasm, and super brownie points for laughing at it. It didn't hurt that Lyndon was slightly awesome to look at. I suppose he has a 'boy-next-door' thing going on, but I totally dig it. Aside from his auburn hair he has bright blue eyes and a slight natural tan. He dressed pretty plain, with a simple black t-shirt and jeans, but it suited him.
"Class, I'd like to introduce two new students to you," our teacher said as he walked into the room. "Miss Maddy Fenning and Mr. Lyndon Jacobs," he announced, motioning towards where we were sitting.
The class turned to look at us and I could feel their eyes judging whether or not we were acceptable beings.
"Hola, we come in peace," I said, waving at the class. Lyndon started waving too and suddenly the class looked a little confused. "Shalom," Lyndon greeted them.
"So are you two related?" one of the other kids asked.
"Who dropped you on your head as child? Do we really look related?" I asked, giving the kid a pointed stare. I had light blonde hair and the whitest skin ever where as Lyndon had some weird eastern European thing going on.
"Simmer," Lyndon said, chuckling at me.
"Oh boo you, I don't simmer for anybody. My stove is always turned on high," I announced proudly. After a short pause I realized that maybe, just maybe, that may have sounded a bit sexual.
"Did you just imply-" Lyndon started to ask before I slapped my hand over his mouth.
"No, no I did not," I huffed. Lyndon shrugged and the teacher got started with the lesson. The class went by without any further interruption and after a few minutes people stopped trying to sneak glances at Lyndon and I. Nosy butts, was it really that fascinating that we were sitting here in the classroom?
Once the bell rang I got up and put my backpack on. "Adios Lyndon, hasta luego," I said before walking past him and out of the classroom.
"Uh see you?" I could hear Lyndon call from behind me. The rest of my day went by without incident, and I actually felt like going to school here wouldn't be all that terrible. Once school was over I headed home, eager to tell my parents that I had creeped out less than ten people all day.
"Mother, Father! It is I, your one and only daughter," I sang as I entered the house.
"Alas, Maddy, how was the new school. Do anything crazy yet?" My dad asked me as he greeted me at the door.
"No way, making a scene on the first day is so trashy, dad. You gotta wait until they trust that you're semi-normal before you break the news." I suppose you could say I got my weird humour from my parents, they were both really obnoxious and didn't take life too seriously.
"Maddy, darling!" My mom called from the kitchen. "How was your first day of school?"
"Pretty good actually, I made a friend," I said nonchalantly.
"Really?" they asked at the same time.
"Is it really that hard to believe?" I asked, frowning at their excitement and disbelief.
"Well, it's just a little rare, so what's their name?" My dad asked.
"Lyndon Jacobs, he's new too. Hopefully when he finds actual awesome people to hang out with he wont ditch me, it was fun having someone actually laugh at my jokes," I mused.
"You found someone who laughs at your jokes? Well you're just full of surprises today Maddy!" my dad said happily.
"Har, har, now what's for dinner?" I asked, walking into the kitchen. I looked around, seeing nothing on the table and smelling nothing cooking. I whimpered a little and frowned at my mom.
"We're going over to the neighbours for dinner, they've invited us," my mom explained.
"But I don't wanna," I pouted. My dad slung his arm around my shoulder and sighed.
"Sometimes Maddy, you just have to do things that you don't want to do. And that is your life lesson for the day," my dad said. "Now come on, we've got some neighbours to meet."
We headed over to the neighbours house which looked exceptionally perfect from the outside. From the blindingly green grass to the perfectly placed lawn decorations, it was obvious that they spent time on their house. My mom knocked on the door and a small woman with red hair answered.
"Oh hello Georgina, Mark!" the woman said, greeting my parents. She looked over at me and smiled again. "And you must be Maddy, aren't you just a cutie," she cooed.
"Hello ma'am," I greeted her. My parents had told me that they were the Meyers, a popular family throughout town for their contributions to the city.
"I'll call Travis down, I'm sure he'd like to meet you," Mrs. Meyer said happily. "Travis! Our guests are here!" A couple minutes later a boy about my age came down the stairs. If I had thought Lyndon was attractive this guy was other worldly. He had shaggy blonde hair and piercing blue eyes that accompanied his perfect smile. I think I may have just died a little bit.
"Hey, you're Maddy right?" he asked. I nodded and blushed a little. Since when was I speechless around people? "I'm Travis." Travis Meyer, I swear I've heard the name before...wait.
"Travis, are you by chance the student president?" I asked hesitantly.
"Sure am, Maddy!" Oh dear god. He just got significantly less attractive.
"Oh, I met one of your minions today, I think her name was Jabba th-uh, Deanna," I said, not so smoothly.
"Yeah, Deanna Emerson, she's great isn't she?" he asked.
"Super great," I replied sarcastically. He caught my sarcasm and looked at me skeptically.
"What? You didn't like her?"
"I mean, I'm sure she's a nice, calm person deep, deep, deep down..."
"But?" he pressed.
"She's way too happy."
"You can never be too happy, Maddy!" Travis exclaimed.
"I'm just not the type to get excited over showing someone the school cafeteria," I explained.
"I suppose, but you really should give Deanna a shot, she's really nice."
"Yeah, I don't think she'll want a shot after seeing the way she scampered off the second our tour was finished," I mentioned. He shrugged and headed to the kitchen with our parents. Stupid Travis, why did he have to be president? His family seems to be permanently happy and perfect. If Travis even attempts to get me to join Leadership with him I may punch him.
"Maddy!" my dad called snapping me out of my thoughts. "Travis here was just telling us about how he's the student president at your school. You should consider getting involved in Leadership," my dad suggested. And there it was, my parents had turned to the dark side.
"I'll pass."
"But Maddy, I think it's a great opportunity to get to know some new students," my mom said.
"I don't think the students that are in Leadership are really the type of students that I want to get to know," I replied.
"Ouch," Travis mumbled from across the table.
"Oh sweet baby Jesus, I didn't mean you," I said, looking at him. He raised his eyebrows at me and I stared at him without emotion. What a dummy. "Sorry for wounding your soul Travis."
"Apology accepted," he said condescendingly. Rude. Once dinner had finished I got up quickly, ready to get home and retreat to my bedroom.
"Maddy where do you think you're going?" my dad said sternly. Geez, my parents were no fun around other people. "You are going to help Travis clean the dishes."
"Oh Mark, that's not necessary," Mrs. Meyer said. Yes! Definitely not necessary.
"Of course it is, Maddy would love to help," my mom said. Damn you, damn you all. "Right Maddy?"
"Mhm, love to," I grumbled. I grabbed everyones plates and headed over to the dishwasher. Travis had gotten the sink ready and handed me a tea towel.
"You can dry," he stated plainly. Joy, I've always loved drying dishes. Travis handed me the first couple of dishes and continued working in silence. After a while I realized that Travis was going at a way faster pace than myself.
"Slow down, my drying skills aren't up to par," I whined. Travis stopped to look at me and rolled his eyes.
"Hey!" I said, hitting him with the towel. He looked over at me and smirked. I was too focused on his smirk to realize that he had cupped some water in his hands and just like that, he splashed my entire face.
"Travis Meyer, you fool!" I screamed, splashing him with water. He grabbed some of the foam and dumped it in my hair, making sure to rub it in. I picked up a frying pan and scooped some water into it, before sending the water flying all over Travis. He looked down in disbelief at his wet clothes and I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Travis, Maddy, what's going on in here?" Mrs. Meyer asked, coming in to the kitchen and looking at us. She gasped before laughing a little bit to herself. "Now Travis, is that any way to treat a guest?"
"She started it," he replied, pointing in my direction.
"Don't accuse a lady of such things Travis!" his mom said. "Apologize."
"Really?" his mom nodded at him. "Sorry Maddy," he mumbled under his breath.
"What?" I taunted him, motioning for him to say it again.
"I'm sorry," he said again. That'll teach him. Just then my parents walked into the kitchen and looked between Travis and I.
"Maddy what have you done to poor Travis?" my mom said. "You best apologize to the young man." No way. Travis looked at me with a smug grin on his face and raised his eyebrows expectantly.
"Sorry Travis," I murmured.
"What's that Maddy," he asked, cupping his ear and leaning closer.
"I am deeply sorry for splashing water all over you and hitting you in the face with a dirty rag." He smiled at me as though he had gotten exactly what he wanted. Dumb. "Can I go home now?" I asked, not even waiting for an answer before exiting the house.
Hopefully there would be no more dinners at the Meyers from now on, I think Travis is a little too full of himself for me. At least I have Lyndon, for the time being, to laugh at my jokes.
As I entered my room and looked out the window I saw that I could see into a room in the Meyers house. It was definitely a guys bedroom, I thought, looking into it. Just then, Travis walked in and saw me staring at him. Oh dear god, this cannot be happening right now. There is no way that Travis Meyer's bedroom is right beside mine. I looked at my see-through lavender curtains and then back at his house. I was definitely going to need new curtains.
I grabbed my pajamas and started to change, as far away from the window as possible. Great, what if I see him naked or something? I thought to myself. Well, I suppose that wouldn't be so terrible, I mean he is pretty attractive. Wait, no, he's a crazy person, plus he's student president. I need to not focus on his sexiness and remember that he is way too happy and annoying. From this day forward Travis Meyers will be my enemy. And I, Maddy Fenning, will never in a million years become friends with that ridiculous student president.
Yay! A new story :) I hope this idea is cool, maybe I'm just an idiot and everyone will think that a love...hexagon is too much. I like it though, I think it's called a reverse harem yes? Anyways, if you could take the time to review it would really help my writing! And if you can't, that's super cool too, I'm glad you took the time to read my story!
