Chapter 1
"Yo! Kai!" Mark Allen called for me across the hallway. "Wait up!" He ran to my side panting for air and asked, "What's this about you leaving Frederick High?"
I started walking and he followed by my side until we got to my locker and I sighed. He's totally not gonna give up on asking me. So I started explaining.
"This may sound obnoxious but-"
"You're leaving because of her? That is so like you. Having a problem, not facing it head on and deciding to friggin' escape it. Come on man" he continued for me. "This may be hard for you but it's hard for her too you know"
"It's her fault!" I growled. "What?! You think I don't know that? That it's hard for her the same way it's hard for me? Geez, Mark, I ain't stupid" I started to walk briskly, far away from him. I left school and went straight home.
Our house was situated in the middle-class portion of the city. It was very much dark when I got home. I pulled up the rag and grabbed the key underneath it and unlocked the wooden door barring me from getting inside my house. I opened the lights and fixed myself some dinner while waiting for my mom.
I had just finished eating when the door opened and my mom's heels were clinking against the floor, signifying her presence.
"Hi, Kai!" She yawned and rubbed her eyes and sat across me.
"Mom" "Kai…" we said at the same time. I gestured for her to go first and looked into her eyes preparing for what she'll be saying.
"You'll be switching to St. James' Academy…tomorrow" she said. I nodded and she said, "what will you be saying, by the way?"
"Uhm...I was about to ask about it." I mumbled. My mom stood up, contented, and said, "Goodnight, Kai. I had a very long day today. I'll be hitting the sack now"
"Sure Mom. Goodnight" I told her and she went upstairs.
I sighed and glanced at my phone. I hope she'd text me right now to stop me from leaving school. I felt something sting my eyes so, I decided to stand up and clean my mess.
