DISCLAIMER BEFORE YOU READ THIS STORY:
Hi there! Before you read this story, I've got a couple of things I would like to mention.
This story follows the much popular and overused cliche of the "bad boy/good girl" trope. I wrote this story in 2012. I was in my final year of high school and I was suffering with some family issue and anxiety. Writing this story was a form of therapy and escape. After writing a couple of chapters and getting awesome reviews, I continued to write dramatic scenes in order to please my audience as well as continue my fake fantasy. There were also many wattpad and fictionpress stories that I read at the time that centered around relationships that were obviously abusive but written as romantic. I bought into that fantasy very quickly at that age. In fact, I wanted that type of relationship when I finished high school thinking that's how all great love stories should be.
To make a long thing short, there are MANY problematic things that I wrote in story. I inaccurately wrote about a character that was labelled "bipolar" but clearly isn't. I also wrote about a cancer storyline that is also pretty inaccurate. I should have done my research, but at the time I was clearly writing for the sake of escapism.
If you choose to read this story, just keep in mind that this romance story is NOT a good example of a healthy relationship. I now know what a healthy relationship looks and sounds like. There are still parts of my mental health that I'm figuring out but I'm happy to say that I am no longer writing about boys who beat people up and kiss the girl afterwards.
ONE - The Trouble Maker
*Tuesday Morning*
"What's up with you?" asked Macie as she found me with my head in my locker.
Like, my head was actually in my locker. I was exhausted and I needed to close my eyes for a minute.
"TIRED!" I groaned into the echoness of my locker, "My boss called me last minute for the late shift again."
After a couple of seconds, I finally took my head out of my locker, to see my two best friends Macie and Lola both giving me weird looks.
"What?" I asked squinting my eyes in curiosity, but then I noticed looking into my locker mirror, I looked like a complete mess.
My usually wavy brunette hair looked like a bird's nest at the top while the attempted try of putting on eyeliner in the morning made my under bags look worse behind my glasses.
It didn't really help that I was also wearing my overgrown red sweatshirt which was down to my knees.
"Ahhh!" I groaned even more, "Lola! Fix me!"
The curly brunette smiled as she bent down to get a makeup wipe from her bag as I took off my glasses.
Lola was a makeup guru, and always looked like she came out of a fashion magazine. I thought she was gorgeous with her light brown, ebony skin tone, and beautiful brown eyes. She had this thin, tall structure which made her look like a french supermodel. Lola was the social one, the one who knew everything about everyone. It honestly amazes me how the smartest girl in our class, could look like she had plenty of sleep.
Macie was my other bestie. Although we were seniors, she was the shorter than most sophomores, but I think it makes her look cute and adorable, especially with her dimples, which I envy every day. She had long red hair, green eyes and a smile that could never disappear. She was the positive one in our group and she made the best cupcakes! Always become best friends with someone who could bake.
"Hold still!" Lola said as she continued to wipe the eyeliner of my eyes.
"You have to stop stressing yourself Kat," Macie explained to me, "I mean work, school, social life...it's too much to handle."
"It's not like I have a choice" I said as my eyes were still closed, Lola reapplying liquid eyeliner on me, "My mom had to quit work because of her condition and I don't want to burden her with my college tuition."
Recently, my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and it's been really hard for the both of us. My mom decided to take a break from work, and rest at home, and I decided to work at the bowling alley to get some extra cash for college.
But my number one motto is stay positive; even at the worst times...
"Still, you deserve to have some fun," Lola said sympathetically, "Anyway, I am done. Cat like eyeliner for my favourite Kat."
"Thanks," I said as I looked at myself in the mirror. I looked about 20% less dead.
The bell rang as we all gave each other disappointing looks, "See you at lunch," said Macie as she and Lola made their way to math class.
I on the other hand had English class with Jayden.
Jayden Miller was the typical, likable, boy next door type of guy. This blonde hair, blue eyed best friend of mine was also a basketball player, who was really trying his best this year to get noticed by scouts. But I know he can do it.
Jay and I have been best friends since the beginning of middle school when we both got detention for playing with our handheld Nintendo DS games.
And oh yeah, have I mentioned that I had a huge, massive crush on him? The worst part is, he already knows about it, but we both don't like to bring up the subject to preserve our friendship.
I walked down the hall, patting my hair down to make it look slightly normal.
Jay was at his locker quickly getting out his books.
"Hey Jay," I greeted him. He looked at me, to reveal he was wearing sunglasses.
"Umm...you know its the middle of November right?" I said, "You don't have to wear sunglasses."
"Yeah, I just thought they looked good on me," he smiled as he closed his locker.
"Okay, take them off," I said sternly crossing my arms.
"What?"
"You have this smiling problem every time you try to hide something," I explained, "You grin like a big goofy idiot. Now take off the glasses."
He groaned for a bit as he took off his sunglasses to reveal a swollen black eye surrounding his usual bright blue eyes.
"What happened?" I asked, slightly worried.
"Basketball practice," he said quickly, smiling again.
"You are like the worst liar in history!" I exclaimed, "Who did you piss off?"
"Why do you think I pissed off someone?" he defended himself.
"Jayden, your big mouth has always gotten you into trouble," I said.
Jay was about to open his mouth when the second bell rang.
"I'll tell you later," he promised, "We don't want to be late for English."
I rolled my eyes as he grabbed my arm and dragged me to class.
Lunch Time
"Basketball my ass," said Lola as she took a french fry from my container, "He totally got into a fight."
"I know right," I agreed. Lola, Macie and I were sitting at our usual lunch table later that day.
"He ditched me right after math," I said, "Does he not remember that I live across the street from him?"
"Why do you care that much anyway?" said Macie as she opened her can of pop, "I mean, no offence, do you really thing that Jayden Miller cares about what we do anyway?"
"Macie," I said rolling my eyes, "You know he's my best friend...after you guys, of course."
"But look Kat, Jayden is in the basketball team...he's not just a basketball player, he's a jock," explained Macie.
"Great philosophy Macie," groaned Lola, "Totally made sense..."
"Hey!" defended Macie, "I'm just saying, guys like him, don't care about the little people like us."
"I've known him forever, even longer than you guys," I said, "He's not as bad as you think Macie. And we're not little people."
"Yeah, we're like the three musketeers," Lola nodded in agreement, "The hot female versions."
Both Macie and I began to laugh as we continued to eat our lunch.
"Plus Kat has had a crush on him since the 7th grade," Lola had to add as I shot her an angry glare.
"What really?" smiled Macie in interest, "Please tell me more..."
Macie only came in the 11th grade, so she never knew of my interest of Jay. Of course, when she heard the word 'crush' she had to become interested.
"Really Lola?" I sarcastically said, "You had to bring up the past..."
"Sorry," she shrugged as she stuffed her mouth again with french fries.
"Anyway, I don't crush on him anymore," I assured Macie, "He has a girlfriend anyway..."
"So your saying if he didn't have a girlfriend, you would totally like him again," explained Lola.
"Would you like me to throw fries in your face?" I asked impatiently.
"Yup, it's a crush," Macie agreed smiling.
"Ok, end of discussion," I exclaimed. I think my cheeks had turned into an all time red.
It wasn't the fact that it was Jayden that the girls were interested. It was the fact that I had a crush.
I was actually really picky when it came to guys. Almost everything seemed like a turn off these days.
It was finally the last class of the day, History.
"Just have to get through this..." I muttered to myself as I went to the back of the class and opened my textbook.
As soon as our history teacher started to speak, my eyes felt like they were burning from exhaustion and I soon found myself using my textbook as a pillow.
"KATHERINE CHASE!" exclaimed a high shrill voice shooting my head up quickly like a rocket.
"This is the third time I've caught you sleeping in my class," said Mrs Dallas, "I'm afraid I have to give you detention after school today."
"What!" I exclaimed, 'No miss, please, I have way too much to do."
Some students in the front began to chuckle but I ignored them. No one other than my close friends knew of my dilemma.
"You should have thought about that before you decided my class was the best time to catch up on your sleep," she said sternly as she handed me a detention slip.
Damn it! I did not have time for this. I had to go to work in the evening, and this is so not what I need right now.
I know there was no point of arguing with Mrs Dallas, so I quietly went back to sleep. It's not like she can give me another detention.
The bell rang at exactly 3:00 pm. I slowly made my way to the detention room all the way at the end of the hall, making sure that Macie, Lola or Jay didn't see me.
I didn't want them to know that I got detention just because I've been falling asleep. They would then most likely get worried and tell my mom.
I went into the detention classroom and made eye contact with the teacher.
"Katherine Chase?" Mrs Jones asked confused, "You're in detention?"
I nodded painfully as I handed her the detention slip.
"Take a seat beside Mr Blake," she pointed to a guy who was already in the room by himself.
He had short, dark brown hair, and piercing grey eyes that looked like he didn't care a damn. He was wearing a these red headphones around his neck which I thought were pretty sick. He seemed to make no eye contact whatsoever as I made my way to the seat beside him.
Wesley Blake. I saw him around school sometimes. He was a bit of an outcast and everyone called him a loner. He didn't really have his own social group, nor did he want one.
But here's the things about me...I don't believe in rumors. I mean, a guy can't completely have no friends whatsoever can he?
Something about him seemed interesting though. I mean, I always did love a good mystery.
I nervously sat on my desk, not really knowing what to do since I had already finished my homework during lunch. I ended up playing with my sweater arms.
"I'll be back in half an hour," said Mrs Jones, "Katherine, make sure he stays here..."
Without moving my head, I eyed Wesley, to see if he would react to what she just said. The teacher left, closing the door.
"If I leave the room..." said Wesley, "Would you stop me?"
I was shocked to hear him speak. He had a bit of a deep and husky voice (which I admit sounded quite attractive) and wasn't making eye contact with me. On the other hand, I wasn't making eye contact with him either.
"I can't stop you..." I said quietly. I'm sort of shy when it comes to new people. I mean, I've been in the same class as Wesley since the beginning of high school, but not once have I spoken to him.
"What? You scared of me?" he asked in a mocking way.
I kind of got annoyed now, "No, why would I be scared of you? I don't even know you..."
I think this was the first time Wesley and I had ever looked at each other face to face. I noticed he had really nice eyes. I was a real sucker for bright eyes, like Jayden's.
"Nice sweater," he smirked as he noticed I was wearing a boy's sweater, "I think I have one just like it..."
"As long as it keeps me warm," I said happily as I put my hood up, "Now if you excuse me, I need to catch up on my sleep."
I quickly put my head on the table, looking the other way. I closed my eyes, adjusting my head to a comfortable position.
All was quiet, until I heard an annoying tapping sound. My head shot up, as I saw Wesley listening to his headphones, tapping two pencils on the desk as if they were drums.
"Hey," I exclaimed, "Can you please stop that?"
"Can't hear you," he smiled.
"Come on!" I groaned. He continued tapping his pencils until I grabbed them and threw them across the room.
Wesley looked irritated but I smirked at his face this time.
"Hey, go pick them up!" he said angrily.
"Nope!" I said cheerfully as I put my head back down.
"I wasn't asking you, I'm telling you," he said as he took my hood off of my head. I shot my head back up.
"And I don't care," I told him. He looked really pissed at me, but I didn't care. He got up from his desk, getting the pencils from across the room.
I knew exactly what he was going to do, annoy me again with his stupid drumming. I don't know if it was the lack of sleep, or his smug attitude, but I quickly unplugged his headphones, which he left on his desk, and took the iPod that was attached to it and put it in my pocket.
Before he turned around, I quickly put my head back down, pretending to sleep.
"Hey sweater girl!" he exclaimed, "Give me back my iPod..."
"I have no idea what you're talking about," I mumbled as my head was still down.
Then it happened. Wesley Blake was completely over my desk, putting a hand on the table and the other hand on my chair as I put my head up.
Our faces were barely an inch from each other.
"Look, you might not be scared of me," he said, "But I swear I can make you scared of me..."
Was this guy threatening me? But to be honest, I was kind of scared. He wouldn't break his eye contact whatsoever which made me real uncomfortable.
"I'm not scared of you," I told him, "Nor will I ever be."
"A girl with confidence..." he said as he moved back. I thought he had given up, but when I least expected it, he grabbed my glasses from my face.
"Hey!" I exclaimed grabbing them back with both my hands. While I did, he quickly went into my pocket and got his iPod back.
"Thanks," he smirked as he jumped back to his desk.
I sat there in awe. That was sneaky...that was really sneaky. But for some reason, I was impressed.
As soon as he put his headphones back on, things became quiet.
"Fuck..." he muttered as he soon took them off.
"What's your problem?" I asked kind of annoyed. I didn't like it when people swore for no reason.
"Other than you," he mocked, "My batteries died."
"Well you know what they say about Karma..." I smiled.
"A real bitch..." he muttered.
I looked at Wesley, rolling my eyes for what I was about to do.
"Look, I'm sorry..." I started, "I'm just having a really bad day, so can we start over?"
I gave him my fakest smile, which seemed to make him smirk a bit.
He didn't seem like he was going to reply until he said, "Can I ask you something?"
"Yeah sure," I said happily, trying to stay positive.
"You know Jayden Miller right?" he asked, this time looking at me.
"Uh, yeah..." I replied slowly, "What about him?"
"Nothing," he replied, "Just wanted to know...now if you excuse me, I've got places to go..."
Wesley got up from his desk, taking his small, black backpack and making his way out the classroom door.
He is so going to get in trouble, I thought. But then, in the back of my mind, I was wondering why he wanted to know if I was friends with Jay.
I mean...Jayden and Wesley? Jayden looks down on him, while I have no idea what Wes thinks (probably not good things). Something was definitely up...
So what do you guys think? Too long? Too boring? Too blah?
Opinions are always appreciated.
So don't forget to...
