Chapter 15
Annabella and David were unsure how to handle the situation. Should they smile and laugh with them? Should they ask what happened? Or should they carry on and mind their own business? They decided with the lather, and prepared themselves by taking a deep breath.
"Uh, hey so did what we miss?" asked David awkwardly.
"Oh, nothing we were just talking about how impossible women can be," chuckled Joe. Martin shot Annabella a look and she scowled. She was done with the attitude Martin was giving her, and was taken aback by Joe's new one. She walked into her tent, not wanting to be with the boys and so she could get some time to think about what David just revealed to her.
"Wait, Bella," Martin said grabbing her by the elbow and making her face him. "I'm sorry for that remark, can we just start over?"
"Did you just call me, Bella?" asked Annabella, a little surprised by the new nickname.
"Uh, yea is that a problem? I kind of just picked it up from Joe…" he said, scratching the back of his head.
"Uh, no it's okay, I'm just not used to it," she awkwardly replied. "But, yea we can start over, definitely," she added with a little perk and smile on her face, happy that her and Martin might just get along.
"Great! Now let's eat, I'm pretty sure you were hungry."
"Yea, I am," she agreed as she laughed.
They walked over to the camp fire, for some fresh cooked wieners, and s'mores for dessert. While eating, Annabella asked the question that Martin was dying to answer. "What happened with the rabbit, Martin?"
Martin swallowed his food and said, "Oh, well, I was just sitting here, waiting for David, you know, while he was getting you guys. And then the rabbit that I saw before came back. And it took a couple of steps, and then turned back. It did this a couple of times; the rabbit made it seem like it wanted me to follow it, so I did. It led me to the clearing where we trained yesterday." He started chewing on his next hot dog, and gestured towards to David, "You know, the one where we did sword fighting and such? Yea, well anyways, it just stopped on in the middle of the clearing, and me being the animal-kind-of-guy that I am, I tried to hold it my arms. I mean it was so fluffy." Annabella stifled a laugh and Martin rolled his eyes at her and continued his story. "So as I was trying to hold the rabbit and getting closer to it, it's friggin' eyes turned red. They turned friggin' red! Like um, what happened to the cute dark brown eyes you had before, rabbit, huh? What the freak happened to them?!" he questioned, as if he was still at that moment of time.
"Wait, Martin, they turned red?" asked Annabella.
"Yea, they did. Absurd right?" he replied to Annabella. She exchanged looks with Joe, as if she was giving him a message. David just had a worried look on his face. "Wait, what happened does that mean?" Martin asked with a concerned voice.
"Nothing, just continue with your story," said David.
"Alright, so it eyes turned red and then it got really big and like monstrous like something took over it. And like, I didn't have my sword with me, so I couldn't fight it. I mean, I'm so good with the sword, ask David," he continued, pointing at David.
"Let's not get cocky now, Mart," chuckled David.
"Anyways, I tried to do the thing that I did with the Volone. The magic shit, and I put my hands together and like tried to shun it. I never meant to kill it. It's just a rabbit, no matter how mutated it is, right? But I killed it. I wanted a small magic ball, and I got big one. Like what was I supposed to do? I can't control my magic. And the worst thing is that when I killed it, it turned back to rabbit and then it into dust."
"Martin, I know you feel terrible, but it wasn't a rabbit, it was a Volone. They can shape-shift. This is really bad. We didn't encounter one but two, here. This is insane. How did they get in? I only made one hole in the force field, and that was for Joe and Annabella. How did this happen?" said David, trying to keep calm for Martin's sake, but failing.
Joe had a face of indifference, but Annabella's mind was blank. It seemed as if she was thinking of something, David turned around, looking at Annabella, concerned. "Anna, you okay?"
She lifted her hand in response, gesturing that no one should talk to her. All three boys exchanged looks. A couple of moments later, Annabella said with an urgency in her voice, "We need to leave. Now."
