Chapter One - Their Circumstances

Rain cascaded down the sky.

And like the rain, she continues to plummet.

Deep in thought, a pair of turquoise orbs stared aimlessly into the darkness. Subconsciously, Charlotte's index finger followed the rain droplets that were racing down the glass window. She could faintly hear the rain in her mind but she was submerged in her own world.

Drip. Drop. Drip. Drop.

Breaking out of her trance, she sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. Her head hurt from thinking too much. She needed a break. Pushing herself off of the window sill, she sat down on the sofa and when her tensed muscles came into contact with the soft pillows, she instantly relaxed. Nothing like home sweet home. She chimed to herself.

A middle-aged woman with turquoise eyes hung up on the phone and put it back on the table. She looked disappointed for a second but quickly dismissed it. She walked back to the living room and sat down on the sofa, catching Charlotte's attention. "So, how have you been getting along with your new project?"

Charlotte sighed as she leaned back into the sofa and covered her eyes with her forearm. "Not very well... I'm not very experienced with the theme that's set this year..." She had hoped that taking a few days off would help her escape reality and hopefully get some inspiration. No luck so far though... Damn creative block.

"I'm sure it will come, darling." the woman tried to reassured Charlotte, "You did great last year so I'm sure this year will be the same."

"Thanks, Mum," Charlotte forced a smile to the woman. She had hoped that her Mum, Kimberly, was right. After all, she only has 2 weeks left before the project is due in. She needs to think of something and fast.

As if reading her stressed mind, a white Pomeranian dog jumped onto Charlotte's lap and licked her face. Charlotte peaked through her forearm and smiled at her dog, Coco. She licked Charlotte's face again and barked as if she was trying to cheer her up. Giving into Coco's attempts at cheering her up, Charlotte giggled and hugged her dog. "Thanks, Coco." Coco barked happily as her efforts weren't put in vain.

"... I'm here if you need any help, Charlotte..." a muscular man with green eyes murmured.

"Thanks, Aiden," Charlotte smiled to her older brother and he nodded in response. However, they both knew that a programmer couldn't really help a jewellery designer but a little reassurance from your family always helps when you're pessimistic.

"Oh, by the way Mum, where's Dad?" Charlotte asked.

Kimberly sighed, "He said that he's on the way back from the hospital but there's traffic so he's going to be slightly later than usual. He did say that he was trying to get off work earlier since both of his children were back, but it seems like it was a bit busier than usual so he couldn't."

"Oh, is that so..." Charlotte felt sorry for her Mum as she stays at home alone. Their Dad, Jordan, is an owner of a line of hospitals so he's at work most of the time. Aiden and Charlotte weren't usually at home with her either because they live closer to their work places at the center of the city. They do try to visit their parents when they can despite their spontaneous work schedules. Fortunately, Jordan is thinking of retiring soon so hopefully they can spend more quality time together.

"Speak of the devil," Kimberly quickly got up from her seat when she heard the door open and rushed out to the hall way to find a middle-aged, muscular man with dark brown hair and eyes, an adult version of Aiden. "Welcome back home, dear." Kimberly hugged him as Coco barked cheerfully at the man.

"I'm home," the middle-aged man, Jordan, chuckled as he hugged Kimberly back before he petted Coco, "Is dinner ready yet?" he pecked Kimberly's cheek.

"Nearly, we're just waiting for the meatballs to cook which should be done in another 5 minutes or so," Kimberly answered as she and Jordan walked back to the living room hand in hand with Coco running back to her owner, Charlotte.

However, as soon as Jordan caught site of Charlotte standing in the living room, his facial expression instantly changed to a playful one.

"So how's my little darling daughter?" he laughed joyfully as he rushed to bear hug Charlotte. Yup, he's a doting Dad.

"I'm fine," Charlotte smiled weakly as she broke off the hug, "Just struggling to get some inspiration,"

"I'm sure it will come soon, dear," he smiled and pecked her cheek, "And you're taking care of your sister when I'm away, right?" he asked as he ruffled Aiden's dark brown hair, "You know, driving away all those stupid men trying to take away our Charlotte," he said in a hushed voice but loud enough for everyone to hear.

Aiden nodded as he remained seated on the sofa. Yes, the men of the family are muscular to protect their woman from any 'wolves'.

"Good boy!" he laughed, "Coco, you're going to protect Charlotte from any stupid men taking away Charlotte as well, aren't you?" Coco barked happily in response, "Now that's a good girl!" Jordan chuckled happily.

Yep. They have Coco in this as well and nobody has a clue how.

"My, my, my, aren't they lively after a hard day at work," Mum giggled care-freely.

And Kimberly doesn't even care, she just goes with the flow. Charlotte sighed again. She felt sorry for the man who's going to be her husband.

"Anyway, why don't you go get yourself freshened up whilst the food is cooking, dear? I don't think eating in your suit would be very comfortable," Mum suggested.

"OK, I'll go get changed. Call me when it's done," Dad pecked Mum's cheek and walked upstairs to get changed.

Charlotte pinched the bridge of her nose and sighed, "Do you and Dad really have the agreement about me, Aiden?"

"... Yes..." he nodded.

"And you agreed to it because...?"

Aiden remained emotionless but Charlotte (and his close friends and family) could tell he was pouting, "... Because I don't want anyone to steal Charlotte away from me..."

That. That right there. That just made Charlotte's heart melt.

"Awww, don't worry. I won't, Aiden" she hugged him, trying to reassure her cute brother.

Aiden didn't comment but Charlotte could see his ears go slightly red which made her hug him even tighter. Gawd, why is Aiden so cute? She squealed lovingly in her head.

"Now, now, dear. You should let go of Aiden before he suffocates," Kimberly chuckled at their sibling love.

"Oh, right!" Charlotte quickly let go of Aiden.

"... It's OK... I like Charlotte hugging me..." he said quietly, disappointed from the loss of a hug from his little sister.

... Charlotte was about to go hug him again before she mentally slapped herself. No, she couldn't go hug him again. She may actually strangle him. But... She really wants to hug him. She may strangle him though... But she wants to hug... Her facial expression was constantly changing from a loving one to a depressed one, to Kimberly's amusement.

"Aiden, maybe you shouldn't have said that. Charlotte dear looks like she's struggling and dying from your cuteness," Kimberly giggled.

"... Sorry..." realizing he's causing his sister distress, Aiden apologized.

Charlotte was suddenly enveloped with warmth. She looked up to see Aiden hugging her and she hugged him back. Burying herself in his chest, she could smell the thyme and citrus in his cologne. Strangely, it was soothing...

However, she came back to reality as she heard a clapping noise and quickly broke off the hug.

"Anyway, how about we serve dinner? I'm sure the meatballs are done by now," Kimberly suggested after she clapped her hands to get Charlotte's and Aiden's attention.

"OK!" Charlotte agreed and Aiden nodded as they followed Kimberly back to the kitchen.

They all started to serve dinner; Charlotte got the drinks and salad, Aiden got the cutlery out, Kimberly served the spaghetti and meatball bolognese. Once they were finished serving everything, Kimberly called Jordan down for dinner. They started to dig in to their dinner and everything went as usual; Jordan doting on Charlotte, Aiden nodding and commenting every now and then, Kimberly and Jordan being lovey-dovey, Coco trying to get their attention and eat their food but failing and Kimberly nagging Aiden to eat his vegetables. Aiden can be unusually stubborn about things he hates though so he refused, but Kimberly was even more stubborn and won in the end.

"Jeez, Coco! You know you aren't allowed to bother us during dinner!" Charlotte scolded Coco.

Coco pulled a sorry face which made Charlotte's heart melt but Charlotte mentally slapped myself. She knew that Coco does that so she could just forgive her and Coco knew that too.

"Coco! Don't do that again, OK?!" Charlotte scolded.

Submitting to her owner's scolding, Coco's ears faced downwards and crouched down. Charlotte smiled weakly. She never liked scolding Coco though it was to discipline her like any owner would. However, she could never stay angry at Coco for long. She was just too cute for that.

"Good girl," she said softly as she knelt in front of her dog, "Now, come here," she gestured to her lap, "Come on," she encouraged Coco and the dog cautiously walked towards her lap. Charlotte hugged her white fur, "Don't worry, I forgive you," Coco suddenly started to get all jumpy and lick her face, "OK, I get it, I get it, Coco!" Charlotte giggled playfully.

After Charlotte finished playing with Coco, she walked upstairs to her room and curled up in a ball on her bed. Sighing for the millionth time today, she closed her eyes. I'm tired...

"Xavier! Xavier! Xa-vi-er!" getting ready to blow, a beautiful, olive-skinned woman took a deep breath, "XAVIER FUCKING KNIGHT, GET YOUR FUCKING LAZY ASS UP!" she shouted angrily as she crossed her arms and tapped her foot. Her patience was going REAL fast, not that she had much of one.

"What, Ana?" a handsome, tanned man, Xavier, grumbled angrily as he sat up in his bed revealing his beautifully shaped abs.

"We've got a gig today so we don't have any time for you to be messing around with girls," the hot-tempered woman, Ana, growled, "So take THAT," she pointed to the naked woman lying next to him in disgust, "out of my sight before I make sure no woman would ever come here again," she narrowed her eyes dangerously.

"OK, OK, OK...! I get it..." he grumbled as he shook the naked woman next to him, "Oi, wake up,"

"Hmm..." the woman moaned as she slowly woke up, "What is it Xavier dear...?"

Xavier cringed slightly at the use of endearing nicknames. He's never liked them and never will, especially not with girls who are friends with benefits. "You need to go, I've got a gig,"

"Mhmm... OK, I'll go then but do contact me whenever you want to," she winked as she got dressed.

Xavier also got dressed by putting on a black shirt and some jeans. He brushed his dark brown hair to vaguely the right place but didn't put in much effort because it was so damn early in the morning. Plus, he has a hangover. Hangovers never felt good... He should really stop drinking.

Xavier sat back down on the bed and sighed. He leaned forward and covered his face with his hands after the girl left. "You happy now, Ana?"

"Very. Now hurry up and refresh yourself. We're meeting in the living room," Ana turned around to leave his room, "And whatever is bothering you for the past week for you to skip out on band practice, stop it," Ana said in a strict tone but Xavier didn't comment. She sighed. Xavier can be so infuriating at times that she really wonders why she tries. "Whatever the matter is, as cheesy as it sounds, we are here for you," and with that, she left the room.

As soon as she left and closed the door, Xavier clenched his fist and slammed it into the wall. He felt so stupid... He took out his frustration on a girl and drinking... That wasn't the usual Xavier. He saw a girl, couldn't find her so he was super frustrated...! ... Ha...! It sounds as if he's in love with this girl. Pfft, he didn't fall in love with her... Right...?

A week ago, Xavier was really bored. Yes, an 20-year-old guy can get bored. He didn't know why but he was just REALLY bored... There just wasn't anything to do in his life.

He walked up a grassy hill to an oak tree at the top of it. When he got up close to the oak tree, he sat down and leaned up against the tree. He yawned and felt himself getting sleepy. I guess a little nap wouldn't hurt... He soon found himself drifting off to dreamland...

He stretched and yawned as he slowly woke up. That was a really good nap... He thought as he scratched the back of his head.

Suddenly, he heard a girl singing.

Her singing was simply... enchanting... like an angel itself was singing.

He was subconsciously leaning towards the source of the voice but was disappointed as the song ended. He heard a pure and innocent giggle which made him snap back to reality. He quickly got up and rushed to the source of the voice but was very disappointed when he saw nobody. He clicked his tongue in annoyance. Turning around to face the oak tree, he found two bouquets of pink flowers and two notes up against the tree. Curiously, he opened the note and it read, 'You are happy in heaven... right?'.

He could faintly smell a mixture of jasmine and roses lingering in the air...

After that, he went to the same place every day, hoping that he would meet the girl carrying the angel's voice. However, when he didn't, he became increasingly frustrated. A week soon passed and he was at the max of his grumpy mood. He was extremely frustrated that he couldn't find her after a week so he drank his worries away and took his frustrations out on a girl he met at the bar. Luckily, it was one that he often meets up with.

"Xavier, honey, why don't we get going?" a girl purred suggestively into his ear.

Xavier agreed, thinking that if he did then he wouldn't be constantly reminded of that girl.

"Great! Why don't you go get a taxi whilst I go to the toilet? I won't be long, I promise" she winked before she went to the toilet.

Xavier sighed. He knew that when girls say they won't be long, he'll most probably have to wait for at least 15 minutes before she's done. Chugging down his last glass of beer, he went outside to call a taxi.

The cool air hit Xavier's face, clearing his drunken state of mind as he opened the doors. Xavier took another sip of his beer before leaning on the balcony. He looked back at the naked woman in his bed, disgusted that he actually had sex with such a woman again. Damn alcohol and what you do to me...! He swiftly turned away and leaned on his elbow.

Suddenly, something hit him and he started to chuckle to himself like an insane man. I was most probably dreaming! I was so tired then so I was most probably hallucinating! Yeah! I was hallucinating...! Yeah... Trying to reassure himself, Xavier took another sip of his beer. Boy, he sure was drunk if he could hear the angel's voice already.

Wait... Xavier turned to face the source of the voice, the same angelic voice as THAT day's. It was coming from the park nearby. He had to move. Quickly. To the source of the voice. Now.

He looked down to his feet and they weren't moving. He cursed underneath his breath and ordered himself to move. Damn him and his drunk mind. Move you goddamn feet! Xavier soon found himself running like a mad man to the voice. He didn't care about the curious stares, the paparazzi or the fact that he was half-naked. He just wanted to get to that girl. He needed to satisfy his curiosity. Now.

When he reached the park, he was panting and leaning on his knees. He could feel sweat trickling off his forehead but he didn't care about catching his breath. He just wanted to find the girl. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand and listened closely to where the sound was coming from. The park was empty so it would be easy to find even just one person. However, he soon found himself hypnotized by the voice. He couldn't help but listen intently. It was enchanting yet so... haunting.

By now, Xavier could recognize the voice was singing Wish You Were Here by Avril Lavigne but the song was coming to an end. He mentally slapped himself to get it together before frantically searching for the source of the voice. He ran through the bushes, across the grass and pavement before reaching a bridge. He could tell he was close as the voice was getting louder but she suddenly stopped singing. He then heard a barking dog.

"OK, OK, OK...! I get it Coco! You're hungry!" the voice giggled, "Let's go then!" Xavier heard the dog bark again.

Fuck. Is she leaving already?! Xavier thought.

He sprinted across the bridge but no one was there. He tightened his fist into a ball until his knuckles went white. He was so fucking close but so far...! If he just came a minute earlier then he would have...! If he wasn't so captured by her voice, he would have...! If he wasn't so drunk, he would have found her! Damn it...!

Why was this girl's voice haunting him so much!?

And that is how Xavier's extremely pissed off and frustrated now...

Hearing the sound of rain, he sighed and took three deep breaths to try to calm down. He had to calm down. He's most probably already made everyone worried and pissed off by skipping band practices. He slowly walked over to the living room, dreading what punishment his band has decided for him.

Somewhere in a dark and eerie room, an insane man's laughter echoed throughout the room.

"Soon Charlotte... Soon...! Soon I will make you pay for what you have done...! I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE!"
