Denying The Undeniable
Chapter 1: You can't cling to him forever
Do you know how long I had waited for him to say those words? Well, I had been waiting since the age of nine. Yes, nine years old. It took him ten years to finally tell me the truth. They say the truth shall set you free right? Well at this moment it isn't setting my best friend free since he was currently giving me the evil eye. His steel gray orbs were narrowed at me in pure distaste. It took all that was within me to not laugh in his face. Sometimes it's hard being such a good person.
"Say it to me again Tristan," I purred in a seductive voice. "Let me hear you say it again."
"Shut the hell up!" he snapped and pushed me off of the bench and onto the grass. I made an 'umph' sound as I hit the ground. I rolled over onto my back and kicked him in his shin. He yelped in pain and fell off of the bench as well. I snorted and sat up.
"Oh stop crying you drama queen," I stuck my tongue out at him and he narrowed his eyes at me. "The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem."
He rolled his eyes at me and sat up as well. "I don't have a problem."
"Yeah you do. You have a problem with me being a better soccer player than you," I stated matter of factly. He scoffed at me and stood up, brushing off his jeans in the process.
"Get a hold of your self Roxanne," he sighed and pulled me off of the ground. "I have to get going. Your sister's waiting for me at some kind of restaurant place; I don't know," he shrugged.
The smile fell from my face but quickly redeemed itself when I realized that he was analyzing me. "Oh okay; get going then."
He narrowed his eyes at me and scrunched up his nose. This was one of his many habits; my favorite habit. Whenever he was thinking really hard about something he would scrunch up his nose. All I know is that whenever he does it he looks adorable.
"Are you upset about something?" he asked still analyzing me.
"No," I responded quickly, sounding like I was out of breath. "Why do you ask?"
"You just gave me that 'I'm pretending everything's okay so you don't question me' voice."
"I didn't," I lied shaking my head. I swear this kid knew me like a book. "Why are you still here? Get a move on," I said as I pushed him away from me.
He turned around and gave me that 'I'm watching you' face before walking off down the field. Once he was out of sight I slumped down onto the grass and wrapped my arms around my knees.
Is it wrong to be in love with my best friend? Well, I've read enough romance novels to know that nothings wrong with it. Well what if my best friend is also my sister's boyfriend?
…
Yea, I knew something was wrong with it. Technically I liked him first. I've liked him since I was nine and he was twelve. My sister was a year older than me so she was always more developed. Now who would like a mangy pale twelve year old when they could have an almost fully developed acne free thirteen year old?
Yea, my point exactly.
Since Tristan was three years older than me and only two years older than Ava (my sister) he would always place all his attention on her. Sure I was still one of his closest friends but I would never be the main girl in his life. Well, as long as Ava's around at least.
I've now accepted that there isn't any hope for me since Ava and Tristan have been dating for five years now. Most girls my age (nineteen) would have given up already but even though I know there isn't any hope, I still hold on. I cling to him like lint on clothes or sand to wet skin but I will never have him hold me in place. Just like a lint roller removes lint from clothes and a towel removes sand from wet skin, I will never be permanently attached to him.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I stuffed my hand in there to remove it. I answered it without looking at the caller ID. "Hello?"
"Roxanne! Where are you? You're an hour late!" I heard my boss scream from the phone.
"Oh shit! Oh my gosh Keith I'm so sorry! I'm on my way okay," I told him getting up in the process.
"You better be!" and with that said he hung up the phone. I grabbed my soccer ball and sprinted towards my car in the parking lot. I tossed my ball in the back seat and hopped in the car. I started the ignition and sped off down the street towards my workplace.
This was the second time I had been late this week; and both times was because I was thinking about Tristan. Stupid boy always possessing my mind.
I got to my workplace in a record time of seven minutes and change. I got out of my car and sprinted to the employee entrance of the building.
Once I was inside I saw Keith waiting for me in the kitchen. When he saw me approaching him he flared up instantly. "Where have you been? You know Saturdays are always hectic around here. Zach had to do both jobs while you weren't here," he explained to me as steam shot out of his ears.
"I'm really sorry Keith. I promise this will not happen again," I assured him.
He gave me a long look before shaking his head, "It better not. Remember your jobs on the line."
I watched as he walked away and released a huge breath of relief. Someone nudged me from behind and I spun around to see Zachery.
"Are you just going to stand there the whole day thanking God that you were not fired or are you actually going to help me?" he asked as a lock of his curly brown hair fell across his forehead.
I smiled sheepishly and shuffled to the locker room to get my uniform. I slipped on my green polo and tied my apron around my waist. I pulled my honey golden locks into a high ponytail and clipped my name tag to my shirt.
I have worked as this restaurant for three years now. It was a nice family owned business that was very popular in my area. Even though it's a family business I was an exception since my mom bakes them her famous apple pie every year. I know it sounds weird but that's the people of this town for you.
I walked out of the locker room and took Zach's job by the door as he went to the tables to take orders. He gave me a dirty look as he was walking away and I stuck my tongue out at him. A family of four walked in and I smiled at them before seating them at a table.
o~o~o
I dropped my body onto my bed and sighed in relief. My six hour shift felt like it was never going to end. So many people came in that it felt like a blur to me.
I got up and removed my clothes from my body. I threw them in the hamper and went into the bathroom connected to my room to have a shower.
A half an hour later I was wrapped in a towel with my honey golden locks matted across my head. I opened the door to my room and shrieked when I saw Tristan stretched out against my bed. "Tristan!" I yelled as I threw my lotion bottle at him.
"Owe!" he howled as he leaped off of my bed. His black hair was frizzy at the back and his gray eyes were hazed over.
"Were you…were you sleeping?" I asked him. He nodded and I gaped at him. "How could you fall asleep so fast?"
"Oh stop acting like you don't already know that I fall asleep easily Roxy," he muttered and stretched his arms above his head. "How was work?"
"Oh it was so hectic I actually…wait, why am I standing here having a conversation with you? Get out!" I demanded as I threw another random item at him.
He dodged it and held up his hands defensively, "Alright, geez. It's not my fault you came out of the bathroom in nothing but a towel."
"I said get out!" I picked up another item to throw at him but he ducked and sprinted out of my room.
Once I was dressed I headed down stairs and into the kitchen where my mom was setting the table for dinner.
"You need some help mom?" I asked her as I stood behind her, resting my chin on her shoulder.
"Some help would be great right now," she smiled and handed me the stack of plates to set onto the table.
As I started putting them on the table Tristan walked into the dining room. "You need some help sugar?"
"Eww don't call me that and no, I don't need any help from a pervert like you," I stated as I stuck my tongue out at him.
He rolled his eyes and shook his head, "Oh come on Roxy, how was I supposed to know you were going to come out of the bathroom with out any clothes on?"
"Well you know most people would use their common sense," I told him as I placed the last plate on the table.
He scrunched up his nose and shook his head, "Well you must have forgotten; I have no common sense," he scowled and walked off as if he had won.
I swear that boy was an idiot.
I finished setting the table and my mom placed all the food on it as well. I called everyone into the dining room and one by one they eventually showed up. My sixteen year old brother Jacob sat beside me, my mom and dad sat on both ends of the table, and Ava and Tristan sat across from Jacob and me.
"Okay everyone, let's say grace before we eat," my dad ordered. We all held hands and Tristan cleared his throat,
"Um I volunteer Roxanne to say grace Mr. Collins," he announced. I widened my bright green eyes at him but he only grinned at me, exposing the dimple in his left cheek.
"Oh alright; say grace Roxanne," my dad encouraged me. I smiled half heartily and closed my eyes.
"Uh, thank you Lord for this wonderful meal that my mom prepared for us. Thank you for providing us with food and please continue to…provide us with food."
There was a pause and Tristan broke the silence by clapping his hands together, "Alright great prayer; now let's eat."
Everyone nodded and dug into the plates of food on the table. I didn't realize how hungry I was until I shoved that first spoon of mashed potatoes into my mouth.
Everyone sat in a comfortable silence and ate their food. My brother had his headphones in as usual and was bobbing his head away to his music.
"So how was work Roxy?" Ava asked me as she placed a spoon of peas into her perfectly pouted lips. Her dirty blonde hair was curled and fell gracefully over her shoulders and her pale green eyes were circled with a nice golden eye shadow. "Rox?"
I snapped my head away from her perfectly almond shaped eyes and smiled at her. "It was okay. You know how it gets on Saturdays so…" I trailed off and took a bite of my fried chicken.
She nodded and turned her body around to whisper something to Tristan. My mom and dad were too deep in conversation to realize this and Jacob was hypnotized by his music.
Tristan seemed hesitant but nodded anyways. Ava grinned widely and turned her body back towards the table. "Everyone, Tristan and I have an announcement to make."
My mom and dad stopped talking and tuned into Ava. I was surprised when Jacob took off his headphones to listen to what she had to say too.
Ava cleared her throat and smiled at everyone, "Okay so after a long and thoughtful debate, Tristan and I decided to…get married!"
My eyes immediately locked onto Tristan's and I realized that he was already looking at me. Like before he was analyzing me; waiting to see my reaction. And just as before I did what I do best, I plastered a fake smile onto my face.
