Chapter Two: Party All the Time
"Olive you look tired," Holly told her. She groaned and looked up from the desk. Olive's laptop was open to her number two term paper. Holly had been calling her non-stop for the past week. However Olive had had to deal with Maleficent and school work. She had avoided people because she didn't know what to say to them. 'Hey I have a fairy godmother only she's kind of evil, how was your day' sounded crazy- she wouldn't become one of those people.
"I've been studying," Olive replied. Last night she had actually studied, she'd even gone to the library like before. Olive glanced around the room- it wasn't unusual for Maleficent to come looking for her.
"No…" Holly joked laughing a little. Olive tried not to glare at her; she turned back to her notes and tried to think of another point to argue in her essay.
"I am tired," Olive replied. Holly frowned at her before looking at the clock. Olive glanced at her paper again. Tonight just wasn't her night.
"Then maybe you should take a break. We'll go out to a party or something!" Holly said. Olive tried to think of a way to get out of this. Holly had many different types of friends- some of which were sleazy. Or she could mean that the party they were going to would have the potential for Sam to appear.
"No…I don't need to go out," Olive tried to shrug. Holly rolled her eyes and flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder. Olive braced herself for Holly's rant.
"I don't think so. How many nights have been studying? No one has seen you in like a week. It's time to come out of your hole," Holly commanded. Olive sighed; Holly would bother her until she put down her books and changed. If she planned everything right Olive was sure she could be out of whatever by one.
"Fine," Olive said shaking her head and rolling her eyes. Holly smiled knowing that she had won..
"Yes! Now we're going to Sam's party. I've heard about them but never been to one," Holly said. Olive waited for her to go on but she didn't.
"What should I wear?" Olive asked. Holly grinned. Olive was going as moral support, at least that's what she told herself. She would forget about her problems while watching drunk people. She could make up stories and see how long until it took them to realize she was lying.
"We're going to my place," Holly told her. Olive shut down her laptop then grabbed her dorm keys and cell phone, not that anyone would call her, and money.
Olive followed Holly. The night air was cool and she wished she brought a jacket. It smelled like fall, the smell of leaves mixed with crisp air, and it made Olive want to curl up with a good book. She sighed as she followed Holly back to her dorm- about a ten to fifteen minute walk. Though they were good friends they decided not to live with each other- something Olive regretted this year- and always meant dorms that weren't necessarily close. Ten minutes later they were in front of Holly's dorm.
"Come on," Holly said.
Holly's room was different from Olive and her roommate's. It was a bit messy but neat at the same time- you could still see the room floor and papers were everywhere. Pictures and school work co-habited the same desk while her closet was like a war zone. Holly's side of the room had lots of movie posters; her bed spread a dull pinkish red. Holly sat Olive down on bed and then went to look onto her closet. Olive stared out the window as Holly muttered to herself. She was shifting clothes and pulling draws open then glancing back at Olive. Olive smiled before Holly then threw a bright red dress at her and two different tops and a pair of shorts.
"Try these on," Holly demanded before asking, "What size bra are you?"Olive rolled her eyes and took off her shirt and jeans and first tried on the shorts which didn't fit. The top, the first of two, didn't go well with her complexion- it was a yellowing gold number that made her dark olive skin look golden itself. Holly wasn't as tall as Olive or in possession of as many curves. She tried on the dress next- Holly frowned and Olive then tried on the next top. It was also red with flecks of gold on it, the shirt was suppose to be baggy and somewhat low cut.
"So?" Olive asked. She'd put her jeans back on since the shorts hadn't fit. Olive was thankful for that- it was too cold to wear anything short.
"Nice! If I were gay I'd screw you straight!" Holly told her. Holly then turned back into her clost to look for an outfit.
"What do you think?" Holly asked. She had picked an aqua colored tube top to go with her white jeans. Olive was reminded of stone jewelry that looked like gum- she wondered if Holly had any.
"You look hot!" Olive smiled. Holly laughed before she put on a pair of wedges. Olive almost laughed with joy at Holly's shoe size being too small for her. Holly didn't insist on makeup though she dressed herself up. Olive just put in earrings before they headed to Sam Livingston's party.
Sam's party was at a house of a group of seniors. Grant Ave, where Sam lived, was basically main street of the little college town. There were lots of shops and restaurants for students and locals alike to go to. Most of the seniors or juniors lived off side streets that fed onto the local road. As they walked varying arrays of students walked along with them. Some of the people had already started crowding Nellie's while others were drifting in and out of the liquor store. Holly giggled as some girls danced in the street in front of a house full of frats.
The music was loud Olive could hear it before they actually got into the party. She wondered how long until they got a noise complaint from one of the neighbors. The alcohol was out on one day- beer was in a cooler underneath with a keg next to the table. She followed Holly into the living room avoiding the people who tried to grope her. It was when they were finally inside that heat and BO hit her. Sweaty people rubbed up against her and she walked to the nearest couch. The dance floor was full of couples grinding into each other. The smell of pot wafted out of the bathroom as the door open two girls and a guy stepped out their eyes red. Olive looked for Holly who it seemed she'd lost in the crowd; she pushed herself towards the couches that had been back up along the wall.
"Can't dance?" asked a guy on the couch with a beer. He was hot with grey eyes and a deep voice
"What?" Olive asked unable to hear. He smirked at her and lean in closer, his breathe tickling her neck.
"Can't dance?" he asked again.
"I can," Olive shrugged. His eyes briefly glanced down her shirt as he moved slightly away.
"Oh." he shrugged. Olive stared at him- she felt as if she'd just been judged.
"Why aren't you dancing?" Olive shouted.
"Olive!" shouted Trisha. Olive smiled- Trisha had been in her freshman English seminar. They'd bonded over Harry Potter and other good young adult novels. Olive usually saw her at parties and they'd hang out otherwise she didn't really know the girl well.
"Hey!" Olive shouted back. She got up to her the blonde, who was in a crop-top and short shorts.
"Wanna dance with me?" Trisha asked pulling Olive to the dance floor.
"Yeah," Olive replied. She smiled at the guy on the couch before being engulfed in the masses.
Olive and Trisha didn't talk but they the music flow through them. Olive knew that at some point Trisha would find a guy to start dancing with and she'd be alone on the dance floor. But for now she'd dance with Trisha. The music was a mix between electronic and rap with a few bits of reggaeton, and she wondered if someone was actually DJing this party.
Olive swayed to the beat of them music and frowned for a second when she realized Trisha had left. She kept dancing anyway, pretending this was a rave instead of a house party. Hands suddenly were on her hips and she turned to make a weird face at the person, it usually worked, only to find Mr. Hot from the couch. He grinned at her before turning her around grinding her from behind. The house fan above them spun trying to cool them.
"You do dance," Olive shouted as she pulled Mr. Hot to the drinks area.
"So do you," he said.
"Olive," she held out her hand.
"Jacob," Jacob said pulling her closer. He shook his head a little so that his hair wouldn't hang in his face. Olive was insistently reminded of Zac Efron.
"So…" Olive began. Jacob kissed her however, a quick hot kiss that could be followed by something else that was hot and quick. His hand rested on her ass as he pressed her into him. Olive leaned in to kiss him again- it had been fast and too quick for her. She was all for making out, the night was young and Jacob was hot.
"Fuck," Jacob muttered. He had avoided her and moved away.
"What?" Olive asked feeling embarrassed. Jacob pushed the hair out of his eyes and sighed.
"Fuck him already!" Holly yelled at her. Olive jumped as Holly smiled at her. She smelt strongly of alcohol and vomit. Olive's cheeks went pink while Jacob snorted.
"Listen Barbie I have a girlfriend. And she's hot," Jacob told Holly. Olive was insulted; he had started the kiss first. He'd looked down her shirt and danced with her- not sure signs of relationships happening but enough for a nice make-out session. Holly grabbed Olive's arm pulling her away from Jacob. She wobbled slightly and tried to glare at him.
"Come on Olive, let's leave this asshole alone. I think you look beautiful, true you could lose a little weight…or not. Or maybe if you finally got…" Holly began. Olive wanted to punch her, because she knew she wasn't a beauty but she thought average was okay. Olive looked around and saw Sam. He looked at Holly and it was also then that Olive noticed vomit on his shoes. He looked pissed
"What happened?" Olive asked. Sam shrugged and tossed her a sweater.
"She's drunk you should take her home," Sam told her. He looked at Holly then gave a nod to Jacob before leaving. Jacob nodded back before looking at Holly.
"Holly…" Olive began but was stopped by a hand in her face.
"Let's go to Denny's!" Holly said. Holly looked at the place Sam had been and frowned she giggled then and point at something. Both Jacob and Olive turned- it was her fairy godmother- to see everyone staring. Olive groaned as Holly swayed and clutched her stomach. She hopped Maleficent hadn't seen her and could avoid talking about whatever. It was still weird to know that she was suppose to be helping this evil person- to know that fairies were real.
"You wanna help?" Olive asked. She glanced back over to where people were staring.
"Funny," Jacob said stepping back. Olive flipped him the bird.
"Go run back to your girlfriend jerkface!" Holly said looking away from Maleficent. She had hoped that her problems would return at a later date.
Maleficent was waiting for her at two am in the morning. She had been spread across her bed with a magazine to read. Her roommate wasn't in and Olive wondered for a second if Maleficent had done something to her. She ignored Maleficent and looked for some pjs to put on- she was dirty from handling Holly. Olive had made sure Holly had got into her dorm room okay and had a bucket to vomit into. Olive had forgotten all about her fairy godmother showing up briefly at the party. The fairy godmother glared at her before smiling, something Olive wished she'd never do. This time her "Godmother" wasn't dressed outrageously but in a pair of jeans and tank top, her hair was lifted up in a huge bun. Her skin however was still tinged green, it creeped Olive out.
"Have you been avoiding me?" Maleficent asked. Olive had tried not to think about the contract she'd signed or anything like that. She had friends to see and worry about classes to pass- she could do that with the threat of becoming a frog looming over her.
"What gave you that idea?" Olive asked avoiding eye contact. Again that chilling smile appeared.
"I got a job as you asked," she told her. Olive tried to remember asking her to get a job. She remembered suggesting she search Google for her book or - she also remembered the glib remark when they first met.
"Okay, that's great. You've found a place to live? " Olive asked. Maleficent shrugged as though it had been easy. She also pulled out a cellphone- her nails looked perfect and Olive worried for Maleficent's bosses.
"Well, I meant a nice boy. His name is Jimmy or something. Anyway long story short I made him fall in love with me," Maleficent shrugged Olive stared at her trying to process the information she'd just been given.
"What?" Olive asked. She wanted to change out of these clothes, to go to bed and forget about tonight but Maleficent was making her worry.
"Yes, I needed a place close to you. I need to know the gossip," Maleficent shrugged.
"And my roommate…you didn't…" Olive trailed off unsure how to ask that question. Maleficent stood and was silent for a moment.
"Oh, sweetie, Olive. I've made her believe you're having a male visitor. So she'll understand," Maleficent smiled. Olive froze wondering where her roommate was- she didn't like the girl but she'd didn't wish Maleficent upon her.
"What do you mean? I'm tired okay, and a little annoy so let's make this fast!" Olive told her. She looked back at the pj she'd placed on the dresser- she still had to go take a shower too.
"Darling when I knock on the door and asked for you one night she was ever so rude. I made sure she was paid back. She isn't that respectful of you," Maleficent told her.
"Okay, we'll talk tomorrow. I need to take a shower and go to bed," Olive told her.
"I think not. We have to find you prince charming so I can go home," Maleficent told her firmly. Olive groaned and closed her eyes. Maleficent was smiling at her in a way Olive could understand why no one wanted her around. She tried to stare the fairy down and failed, she sighed.
"Tomorrow. Right now I want to punch you so badly," Olive told her through a yawn.
"As you wish…" Maleficent said. She muttered something that sounded like "bitch" as she stalked off. She glared at Olive when she finally reached the door- having walked slowly across her dorm room.
Olive glanced at her clock- it was ten thirty on a Sunday. She glanced at the bed across from her knowing that her roommate was probably still at her boyfriends. She was glad that Maleficent had done that if nothing else. Olive glanced at her phone and saw no messages from Holly- who was probably still asleep. She dressed quickly and started walking to the cafeteria. She planned to spend see a movie, study and maybe talk to Maleficent about how they were going to find this book- without her having to grant wishes. She had a light breakfast before heading to the bus stop- she checked her phone one last time. She took the campus bus half way there before walking the other half. The smelled of popcorn wafted over her as she opened the door to the movie theater. There wasn't a line; Olive quickly checked the time board, before buying her ticket.
"One for Looper, please," Olive said. The woman in box office nodded and stared at her.
"ID please?" she asked. Olive pulled out her license and showed it to the woman.
"Nine dollars," the woman told her. Olive pulled a twenty and handed it to her as she put her back license into her wallet. She was forty five minutes early so she decided to wonder around the mall. She could go to Barnes and Noble and look for something on sale to read.
"Olive?" she heard. She turned to see a green tinged woman smiling, if one could call it a smile, at her. She stood behind the popcorn counter in an ugly red and black uniform. Olive wanted to disappear.
"Maleficent," Olive tried to smile, "what…what are you doing here?" Maleficent laughed, or cackled, putting her evil smile to shame, and shook her head.
"I work here darling! Come to see a movie?" Maleficent asked. Olive's eyes darted around looking for the fastest escape. She didn't have the energy to deal with Maleficent yet or the time. Her eyes fell back on her fairy godmother- she sighed. The popcorn in the warm looked not like popcorn but like maggots wiggling and the nachos looked like spiked bombs ready to blow, Olive did a double take. Maleficent looked at her and she knew that she hadn't imagined it.
"Yes, I was about to go to the bookstore," Olive replied, calm.
"Books for school?" Maleficent asked.
"No, just for fun. Ah, I should probably get going, I wanna get some coffee too," Olive told her. she took a step away.
"You don't want to buy from the stand? Ollie…" Maleficent tutted. Her smile reminded her of a Venus fly trap
"It's a little out of my price range right now. I am a college student you know," Olive reminded her. Olive didn't think she'd be able to eat popcorn or any food from the movies any time soon. The images were still there in her mind.
"So am I! I signed up from semester B classes. If I'm to be stuck here for quite some time why not learn more about you? Oh, Ollie I need to get you a date!" Maleficent told her. Olive wanted to yell, to somehow end this madness; the thing she'd be running from was going to follow her to the ends of the Earth.
"Oh, so you're not going to leave me alone?" Olive asked hopefully. She'd go to the book store after the movie, that way she could avoid Maleficent and have an excuse to do so.
"Never," Maleficent smiled making Olive cringe, "Think of me as your own personal stalker."
"Well I really should get going…" Olive said hurrying towards her theater- number thirteen.
As she sat down she realized she forgot to buy some type of food. She left her sweater on the chair and rushed into the mall. There was a stand- called the Corner Store- were you could buy candy at normal prices. The woman smiled at Olive as she picked out Junior Mints, fruit snacks and a bottle of cran-grape juice. She paid seven dollars and then hurried back to the theater. Four other people had joined her in the theater, mostly old people.
Olive looked for Maleficent as she left the theater. However, thankfully, there was a line of patrons waiting for food. Olive wondered for a second if she'd hoodwinked these people into not caring how long she was taking. She checked her phone, four texts and one miss call.
"Hey," Olive said when Holly finally picked up- the fourth ring.
"Hey…" Holly replied. She sounded rough and Olive tried not to laugh.
"What's up?" she asked. Olive stepped outside and wished she lived in a house or apartment type place- then she'd be able to drive.
"Nothing much, just wondering what you were up to. Wanna get lunch?" Holly asked.
"Yeah, the diner?" Olive asked.
"Like ten minutes?" Holly asked before adding, "I'm not really dressing for this though."
"That's fine," Olive told her. It was semi- warm as she talked, walking to the bus stop. Olive made it just on time, though the bus was full- everyone doing their walk of shame. It also meant the diner was probably crowded or getting ready for the lunch rush.
Olive spotted Holly as she walked into the diner. She was clad in sweat pants and Sam's sweater from yesterday. She sat down on the opposite side, dropping her purse next to her. Holly grimaced as she smiled at her. Holly's sunglasses still covered her eyes as she sipped coffee.
"How are you?" Olive asked. She tried not to laugh or smile, Holly sniffed.
"Hungover," Holly grumbled.
"What would you like to drink?" asked the waitress.
"Diet Coke no lemon," Olive ordered. She then turned her attention to the menu, glancing at Holly.
"I'm going to the bathroom. Order pancake for me? With a side of one egg!" Holly told her. Olive nodded and decided what to get herself.
"Eating alone?" said a male voice. Olive looked up to see Jacob and some hot chick hanging on his side. She was tiny with tattooed arms and long strawberry hair. She was wearing skinny red jeans and a floral shirt. They reminded her of a Hollywood couple, the bad boy and girl couple.
"I'm not. My friend is in the bathroom," Olive shrugged. She wondered if that was his "hot girlfriend" and the reason they hadn't made out.
"Cool," the chick said in a deep voice.
"Really?" Jacob asked. His blue shirt made his eyes look blue; he was too dressed up for a Sunday morning for her. He was too awake it made Olive wanted to punch him. She was pretty sure he stayed up just as late if not later than her.
"Babe, leave her alone," his girlfriend said. She gently swatted his arm and giggled and looked at Jacob with love? Olive couldn't decide. She wondered how long they'd been together.
"Whatever," Jacob said. He glanced down at her- Olive wanted to smirk, she wasn't wearing a low cut shirt today.
"Whatever," Olive shrugged. Jacob smiled at her and she smiled back, like they had an inside joke.
"Later," Jacob said. He tugged the chick along with him to another booth, the woman's back to Olive. The waitress came back moments later and Olive placed her order and Holly's.
"Sorry about that," Holly said as she slide back into the booth.
"No problem, I ordered for you," Olive replied.
"Thanks," Holly sighed. They sat in a somewhat comfortable silence. Holly took off her sunglasses while Olive stared out the window.
"SO, what happened?" Olive asked finally. Holly groaned, her hands covering her face.
"Nothing much. Just Sam macking on some other girl," Holly told her.
"I'm sorry," Olive said. She understood, her ex-boyfriend had been fucking her roommate last year. At first Olive had tried to forgive him until she caught him again.
"I bet all of Sam's friends knew too. Just like they knew that I liked him," Holly said. She looked ready to cry but the waitress brought them their food. They ate in silence, buttering their pancakes.
"I'm gonna pretend yesterday didn't happen," Holly said finally as they waited for the check, "I have to buy him new shoes anyway."
"Yeah, I felt bad but I was more worried about you," Olive shrugged.
"I love you," Holly smiled.
"Yeah, yeah," Olive laughed. They went up to the counter to pay- together it was seventeen dollars.
"Ollie!" Maleficent shouted. Olive pursed her lips and turned to face her stalker. Maleficent was holding hands with a nerdy looking boy. He looked at her fairy godmother with awe and went straight to the hostess for a table. She didn't know why but for some reason Maleficent annoyed Olive. Maleficent made her want to run for the hills and never look back.
"Hello," said Holly. She stared at Maleficent before putting her sunglasses back on.
"Are you two just sitting down?" Maleficent asked.
"No," Olive replied. Maleficent pouted. The guy she was with came back and frowned, he glared at Olive.
"What's wrong? What do you need?" he asked.
"Rob, darling have you gotten us a table?" Maleficent asked.
"Yes, it's near a window like you asked," he told her. She smiled at him and he seemed to brighten with joy.
"Good, go wait for me there, my love," Maleficent said scanning the diner. She turned back to Olive a smile on her face.
"I'll be waiting for you!" he simpered. Holly coughed- Olive was sure she was trying to cover a laugh.
"What are you doing here?" Olive asked after an awkward silence. Holly didn't help by sighing loudly- a sign she wanted to leave.
"I eat here nearly every day," Maleficent told her. Olive stored that away, knowing that even if the food was good she wouldn't be coming back.
"I see, can't cook?" Olive asked.
"Olive I'm gonna wait outside, okay?" Holly interrupted. Olive nodded, thankful for an exit. Maleficent nodded to one of the waiters who smiled back. Olive had the odd feeling that she'd just placed her order.
"I don't know what cooking is, but I'm sure I can do it," Maleficent said. Olive frowned feeling as if she'd insulted her own fairy godmother, though she was still pretty sure she was an evil fairy godmother.
"Right, well I should be going," Olive said turning towards the exit.
"Ollie I want us to be friends. Let me be blunt when I say you don't have many. You need me as much as I need you. So…truce?" Maleficent asked. Her voice sounded tired and Olive almost found herself giving in.
"Need you how? I can make other friends if I want!" Olive snapped. Maleficent tuted and shook her head.
"Sweetie, you're a mess. I looked into your future and your past. What did I find? Boring, dull annoyingly painful. I wouldn't pay to watch," Maleficent sighed.
"What if I don't mind my life being boring?" Olive asked. She had a feeling Maleficent's idea of fun and adventure were what landed her on the 'do not invite' list. Maleficent smiled and glanced at Jacob and his girlfriend.
"Ollie don't be silly, you really think your life will be boring now that I'm here?" Maleficent cackled, "Honey my sisters will have noticed I'm missing, they want me locked up. They think I went too far and now that you've sign that contract you're on my team. You're in this whether you like or not," Maleficent told her.
"Your sisters?" Olive asked her eyes went wide in shock. It hadn't accrued to her that she'd have some fairies after her for helping Maleficent.
"They know Mom liked me best," Maleficent sighed, "We should go shopping tomorrow. I'll call your Holly friend and the three of us can go."
"I have to go," Olive told her. She wanted to figure out some way to get out of this. To get her life back on track.
