The Bride in Black

I

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she was chosen
to marry death.

When they told her,
she did not cry.
She merely closed
her eyes, and nodded.

She had seen the day,
this news coming, and
she did not weep over
what she knew would come.

One day, she was sick.
Then she recovered –
the only difference was
her heart breaking inside.

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she had no choice
in anything but the colour.

II

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she was chosen
to marry death.

She used to be hopeful –
But those gentle eyes
have seen more than
they should have.

There is no hope now.
How can there be?
There is no life, no love
and no more hope.

The music of bombs
serenades the wedding
as the guests drink
from cups marked poison.

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she knew black
was all that would come.

III

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she was chosen
to marry death.

The pain came
as she knew it would.
The abused spiralled to her
as though she was a black hole.

Despite everything, she wasn't.
One shattered piece of hope
still found home in her heart.
He saw it, he wants it dead.

But she survives –
walking through life's red rains
past a childhood of indifference
she survived that; she will survive this.

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
now black is all she sees
as his fists rain on her.

IV

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she was chosen
to marry death.

The gift of god,
given away to hatred
knew no love but
her god's, her father's.

But god gave her another chance.
Gentle touches, soft sighs
meant nothing to her but
what she could never have.

Now, this love is hers,
hers to cherish and hold.
The gift of god is not
a martyr for love.

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
because gifts are wrapped
in colours representing them.

V

She dressed in black
on her wedding day,
for she was chosen
to marry death.

But love fought
death's evil clutch
and she began
to breathe again.

Once again, the girl
of beauty, intelligence,
found lovely hope
in the starry sky.

The gift of god,
the princess of life,
accepted love –
and now, she is happy.

She dressed in white
on the day of the divorce,
for love helped her
break free.
