Chapter 3
The sun slowly began rising behind the row of pine trees in their back yard. Julian and Violet both fell asleep on the sofa in the study, they were covered in a beige antique throw with cream coloured tussles and Violet was using Julian's muscular chest as a cushion. Casey fell asleep on the red and brownish coloured African rug next to the window.
Julian woke up with golden rays of sunlight shining I his eyes. He looked at his wrist watch and saw that it was half passed nine. He gently shook Violet to wake her up and she fluttered her long lashes in the bright light peering through the dark stained bamboo blinds. She stared at him for a moment and gave a tired smile; she closed her eyes and yawned.
"Morning honey, did you sleep okay?" Julian asked her in a caring voice.
"Morning honey, well to be honest I don't really think two hours of sleep is enough but I guess it was fine; how did you sleep?"
"Okay, thanks to you," Julian said with a now wider smile.
"Me? What did I do?" Violet asked beginning to smile as well.
"You were right here beside me," Julian said in a proud voice.
Violet blushed. She couldn't believe that even now in these harsh times he actually still made comments like that, she was so lucky to have him. Violet leaned forward and gave him a deep kiss.
"You're still that great kisser you were when we met," Violet said and gave him one more kiss before she got up.
He smiled while he watched her walking out the study. Julian got up and ran his hand through his hair; he yawned and got up, stretched a bit and walked to the window. Luckily the 'zombies' weren't in front of the gate anymore. But where were they? Ignoring the fact that those things weren't there anymore, Julian walked down the stairs to the kitchen just to find Violet passed out on the white tiled floor. He ran to her side to check if she was okay. Her heart beat was very faint; he picked her up in his strong arms and carried her to their bedroom. Julian carefully laid her down on the silky lilac bed and quickly ran to get the medical kit before realizing that Violet already packed it in. He quickly searched through the bag and found the kit. He immediately knew Violet forgot to take her Insulin shot when he saw an extra one in the medical kit. He gave her the shot and held her in his arms, tears slowly forming in his chocolate brown eyes. One tear escaped and landed on Violet's soft cheek, she slowly opened her blue eyes just to see Julian looking at her worriedly.
"Thank goodness you're okay, why didn't you take your shot?" Julian asked, anger rising in his voice.
"Sorry honey, there were just so many things going on I didn't think about it," Violet tried to explain getting up from his lap.
"Don't forget again!" Julian said walking out of the room.
"Babe, I'm sorry!" Violet said, getting up and hurrying after her fiancé.
Julian ignored her and walked to the kitchen to get some coffee. Violet came down the stairs and stood at the other side of the kitchen counter.
"Please honey, I'm sorry okay. You can't blame me, I just simply forgot. How do you expect me to remember when all of these things are going on around us?" Violet pleaded.
Julian didn't even look at her. He just kept his back to her and drank his coffee staring out the window.
"You know what?" Violet said frustrated. "Forget about it okay, you don't care anyway," she said without thinking and walked away. Julian looked over his shoulder in her direction. Damn Julian, what the hell! He thought to himself.
Julian set down his mug and sprinted up the stairs.
"Violet, I'm sorry! I shouldn't have made such a big deal out of it," Julian said.
As Violet heard him saying this she just covered her face in her pillow and started crying hysterically. She was sitting in a hand weaved chair next to the window. Violet said nothing.
"I'm really sorry Babe; I shouldn't have overreacted so much. It could have been worse. And I do care, you know that!" Julian said. Violet pulled back the pillow; her eyes were soaking wet. She jumped up and ran into his arms; she could never stay mad at him. She started crying into his chest. Julian held her tightly in his arms as if there might not be another moment to show his love for her. "Honey, I love you okay?" Julian said staring into her beautiful blue eyes.
"I love you too honey, with all my heart," Violet said smiling up at him.
"I don't want anything to happen to you," Julian said kissing her on her forehead. The moment was soon spoiled when Violet saw the time.
"We have to get ready to leave Babe; it's already ten thirty," Violet said with a deep sigh.
"Yeah, listen I was thinking, don't you think we'll be safer here?" Julian asked.
"I don't know, I think that it would be best if we go to that theatre so we can get a good look at this mess. Not that I really would prefer going to the theatre but when we have more clarity over the situation we can come back," Violet suggested.
"Okay, let's do that," Julian said giving her a loving smile.
Violet started to pack all the groceries in cooler bags and made sure of all their appliances. Julian started getting the laptops and the electronics they would need ready.
Suddenly they heard something falling in the back yard. It sounded like one of their chairs hitting the wooden deck. Julian ran down the stairs to see from the kitchen window what had made that noise. Violet also came running down the stairs and off course she was followed by Casey.
"Did you hear that?" Violet whispered, searching the yard with her eyes.
"Yeah, what the hell was that? You don't think one of those things got in?" Julian said worried.
"Is that even possible? Our fences are kind of high; those zombies would seriously need to have some climbing skills if they were to get in," Violet said still staring out the window.
"I'll go and check it out, you stay here," Julian said grabbing the gun from the kitchen counter, and calling Casey to join him.
"Babe, be careful," Violet said.
"I will," Julian said smiling at her as if nothing was wrong.
Violet followed him to the door and gave him a kiss before he left. He closed the door behind him and Violet locked it from the inside. As Julian went around the corner of the house, he heard soft voices from behind one of their white rose bushes. He got his gun in the right position and started walking slowly in the direction of the rose bush.
