Alice

Chapter 1

I learn two important lessons in life:

1) Don't ever be best friends with the most popular and sexiest guy in high school.

And 2) Don't ever fall in love with your best friend, because it's like walking through hell.

"Wake up!" my little brother, Jack, yelled at me. He pulled my purple dotted blanket off me and I groaned. "God, Ali, I'm going to be late for school and Principle Matthews will be on my case again!" he said while jumping on my bed.

"Okay, okay," I finally gave up and kicked him off my bed. I sat up. "For a 16 year-old, you're so bossy." I said, rubbing my eyes.

"I learn from the best," he grinned and I threw a pillow at him. He got off my bed and said, "Hurry up, I'm not saving any pancakes!" with that he closed the door behind him as he went downstairs. I finally got out of bed after about five minutes and checked the time on my phone.

7:52 AM

"Shit, shit, shit," I muttered and quickly went to the bathroom to get ready. I only had like eight minutes. After brushing my teeth, I fixed my long brown hair to a high ponytail; letting a few curls framed my face and applied some lip gloss and brown eye-shadow. I headed out of the bathroom towards my closet and quickly pulled out something that matched. I pulled out an oversize Resident Evil t-shirt with an image of Alice holding a shot gun and black glittery skinny jeans and slipped them on. I grabbed my books and stuffed it into my Vans backpack and grabbed my keys on my dresser, and hurried downstairs.

I quickly shoved two pieces of pancakes on the island in the kitchen and then headed to the doorway. Jack was already at the door, tapping his foot impatiently. "Took you long enough," he said. I rolled my eyes at him and ruffled his hair as I went pass him. "Hey, stop that," he whined.

"Still my little brother," I said. He muttered something unintelligent under his breath and followed me out the door. Mom and Dad had already left for work, so I ended up having to drive Jack to school in my black Audi R4.

Jack hopped into the passenger seat as I unlocked the door. I got into the driver's seat and put my bag in the back seat and started the engine. Jack was fumbling with the radio, tuning it to some song by Kendrick Lamar, which I didn't mind at all.

I drove to our school—Lakewood High—and parked my car next to Quinn Hamilton's red Porsche. Quinn Hamilton was my best friend since elementary. His mother and mine were college friends, which led to us having spent a lot of time together. I didn't mind it. I mean, he would always let me play on his Xbox while he's on his computer playing Minecraft.

Quinn would always be over at my house to either hang out or just to help me babysit Jack. Actually, he was practically living at my house. Dad even gave him the spare keys—in case Jack and I locked ourselves out—and the right to ransack the fridge. Well, I didn't mind it at first until puberty and high school were added to the situation. Quinn soon started growing muscles and became way too taller than for my liking, and became a 'God' at my school. Meanwhile, what I got was pimples and barely a size C cup boobs. I know I shouldn't be comparing myself as ugly. I was fine, but still, it was unfair that Quinn got to be five inches taller than me. He made me feel small and tiny whenever I stand next to him. Though, I was happy that I haven't become those 'divas' that Quinn and his friends were always hanging out and flirting with.

As I turned off the engine, Jack got out and headed towards his friends. Meanwhile, I just sighed and grabbed my bag from the backseat and got out. Quinn was sitting on his car's hood while flirting with Jessica Meyers, a.k.a. the Queen of Divas. He usually came to school earlier than me, because he usually had soccer or football practices in the mornings before school.

I rolled my eyes as I reached them. I pulled out my book that I was currently reading and let it fall on Quinn's lap. He looked up from Jessica's D cup boobs and turned to me. He gave me a confused look while picking up the book that was on his lap. Jessica, on the other hand, gave me a glare and I just snickered at her.

"God, Ali, you're such a nerd," Quinn joked picking up my copy of Sentinel by Jennifer L. Armentrout. That book was fabulous and awesome; unfortunately, my best friend didn't think so.

"Anyway…Mom wants your family over at dinner tonight," I told him. Jessica was still glaring at me, but I didn't care.

"Tell her I'll be there," he said, and gave Jessica a long kiss on her neck. I almost gagged.

"Ahem?" I coughed. "You guys are going to disturb me for life," I said and left to go inside.

Quinn soon caught up to me and swung his arm around my shoulders. "Oh, come on, don't be like that," he said.

"Ugh, you're such a pervert," I groaned and headed towards my locker. He let go of me and leaned on the locker next to mine.

"Are you jealous, bestie?" he simply said. I laughed at that.

"You wish, I'm just disgusted," I told him.

"Yeah, right," he said. I rolled my eyes again and stuffed my books into my locker and closed it. "So, you're really reading that book?" he asked, holding up the book that I threw at him.

"No, I just carr inch book in my backpack for no reason," I said, sarcastically. I started heading towards my first period that I shared with Quinn, which was AP Biology. Quinn tagged along behind me.

"Are you on your period?" he asked, and I almost went pale.

I abruptly stopped and turned to glare at him. I hold up my book and threatened, "I'm about to shove this up your ass."

"Is that your excuse to look at my ass?" he raised a brow at me. I rolled my eyes and turned to walk away from him.

"Whatever…" I muttered. Quinn just laughed it off and wrapped his left arm around my waist. I rolled my eyes one more time, before reaching AP Biology. I headed to the back of the room where I seat. Quinn followed me and sat next to me on my right. He was rambling about something about football, but I ignored. I wasn't into many sports, only soccer and swimming. I was actually the captain of the girls' swimming team while Quinn was the captain of the boys' soccer and football team.

Soon my mind started wandering to the people that was coming into the classroom. One of them was May Andros, my only female best friend there is. The only reason she was my only best friend, because she didn't flirt with Quinn, probably because she had a boyfriend, Nicholas Godfrey, already. She headed to the seat on my left and sat down next to me.

"Hey guys," she greeted. I smiled at her.

"Hey," I greeted her.

Quinn just gave her a wave, but still focused on me. "So what do you think?" he asked me. I turned to look at him.

"What happen?" I asked him.

He rolled his eyes. "I hated when you doze off," he muttered.

"And I hated when you snored," I teased.

"I do not snore," he defended. I turned to look at May; she just giggled.

"Sorry, dude," she gave a sheepish smile to Quinn. "But Ali's right, you do snore, I was there, remember?" she said. I couldn't help but giggled too.

"Whatever…" Quinn muttered and turned to talk to someone else, not bothering us anymore.

"So how was your weekend?" May asked me.

"Ugh, tiring," I told her. "I was stuck to babysit Jack on Sunday, and ended up watching Quinn and him play Call-of-Duty on the TV. They made me miss the last episode of Once Upon a Time."

May giggled, and from what I can tell, it wasn't about what I just said.

"Ugh, what did Lover-Boy do now?" I asked, referring to her boyfriend.

"Well…" she started and I rolled my eyes. "On Saturday, Nic drove us to the beach, and he had candles everywhere and Frank Ocean was playing…"

"Wow, I didn't know Nicholas was the romantic type," I said, rolling my eyes at her, but smiling because she's acting all giggly and girly.

"Shut up," she slapped me lightly and continued with her story. "The best part was that he started singing to me…" I dozed off when I felt a finger tracing small circles on my right thigh.

I turned to look at Quinn, but he was still talking to the guy on his right. I noticed a smirk on his lips. Ugh, that goddamn pervert! Why was I best friends with him anyway? I reached down to his hand and pinched it. I saw his face winced a little, but he pulled his hands away. I sent him a look.

"Hello?" a hand was waved in front of me. I turned to look over at May. "I have to agree with Quinn, I hate when you dose off." I rolled my eyes at her. Almost everyone said that to me. I gave May an annoyed look.

"Shut up, it's not my fault that I like to think about something else every five minutes," I told her.

"Make that every five seconds."

I gave Quinn my annoyed face. "Stop being an old man," I retorted.

"Stop being an old woman," he said back, smirking.

"For two greatly best friends, you guys are mean to each other," May pointed out. It was true, even though we were best friends forever, we did get into little fights, but we always laughed at them in the end. Quinn's and mine dad usually joked that we act sometimes like an old couple. We would always 'eww' at that.

"I thought you were my bestie, how could you say that to me?" I gasped dramatically.

"I thought you were my girl, too," Quinn said, putting a hand to his chest and pouted.

"I love you two both, but stop acting like an old couple," she said. I dropped the drama and glared at her. Quinn glared at her too.

"Not you too," we both said to May. She gave us a quizzically look.

"What?" she asked clearly confused about what we were saying.

"Whatever," I said, and waved it off. I faced the front just as the teacher came in.

I was in my room doing my science homework—well, I was trying to. It's quite hard to concentrate when your male best friend is look through your cabinets, hoping to find whatever he was looking for.

"Quinn, sit your butt down," I demanded. Quinn turned to look at me as he rummaged in my third cabinet.

"I thought you like looking at my butt," he pouted, turning back to whatever he was looking for.

"I actually prefer looking at Theo James butt than yours," I stated matter-of-factly.

"Yeah, yeah," he said. "You prefer a small butt." I gapped at him and threw a pillow at him from my bed. It hit his head, but he didn't cared. "That actually hurt," he said, not turning towards me.

"What on earth are you looking for?" I snapped.

"Found it!" he said, cheerily. I saw him pulled something out with plastic around it. I gasped. In his hands was a bag of white chocolate that I had been hiding in my bra cabinet from my brother. "That was a nice place for you to hide it," he smirked at me. He opened the bag and about to get a handful of my precious chocolate, but I quickly got off the bed and ripped the bag in half.

"You are not having any," I told him and carried the bag to where I was sitting and put it between my legs so that he could reach for it. I started looking at my science homework, trying to find the answers in the text.

"That was unfair!" Quinn whined. "I found it fair-and-square!" I rolled my eyes, sometimes Quinn could act like a child.

"Sorry, but no," I told him, not looking up, which was truly a mistake, because if I had look up, I would have avoid 110 lb. hitting me on my right side of my body. "God, Quinn!" I shrieked, as Quinn threw himself at me.

He grabbed the bag of chocolate between my legs and laughed as he got up. "Got it."

"You could have killed me," I snapped at him, rubbing my side.

"It was worth it," he said, smirking at me.

"You are such a jerk!" I snapped at him. I grabbed a pillow and started hitting him with it constantly.

"Ow, ouch, ow!" Quinn said, raising one arm to block my hits. "Stop it, Ali!"

"That's what you get for jumping on me!" I yelled at him.

"Quinn, Ali, dinner is ready!" I heard my mom called from downstairs. I stopped hitting Quinn and yanked the bag of chocolate from him and stuffed it into my bra cabinet. I turned back to Quinn, where he was recovering from my hit. I pulled his t-shirt out towards the stairs and headed into the dining room.

Everyone was seated at the dining table as Quinn and I reached the bottom of the stairs. My parents were sitting next to Quinn's with all the siblings on each side of their parents. Jack was sitting right next to Dad. Quinn had two little sisters, Jamie and Jane. They were both twins two years older than Quinn and I. I came to the table and sat next to Jack and Quinn followed suit and sat next to me.

"Finally you two came down," Mom muttered and I rolled my eyes.

"Whatever," I muttered.

"Mrs. Monroe," Quinn started and everyone turned to look at him. I was busied stuffing my plate with spaghetti. "Did you know that Ali has a whole bag full of white chocolate?"

I almost dropped my fork.

"Alyson Jacobs Monroe," Mom said my full name. Quinn leaned over a bit to whisper to me something.

"Pay-back," he whispered in my ear.

"Yes, Mom?" I said, looking at my mom, and stomping hard on Quinn's foot under that table. Quinn winced in pain a little, but did nothing more.

"How many times have I told you not to have candy in your room?" my mom snapped.

"The sixtieth?" I replied, unsure.

"You know that having candy in your room attracts ants, and don't come crying to me when you start have ant bites," my mom said. "Right after dinner, I want you to bring down those candy you have from your room and put them in the fridge, and hopefully, it won't go anywhere near your room."

"Yes, Mom," I said. I sneaked my hand under the table and pinched Quinn's arm.

That little bastard.

The rest of the dinner was fine. Quinn and I would get into silly fights. Jack and I would fight over the food. Jamie and Jane would embarrassed Quinn. Both parents would embarrassed Quinn and I about how we used to take baths together.

Yeah, too much information.

At the end of dinner, Quinn stayed for a sleepover with me. I didn't mind. We had been sleeping in the same bed since we were born. While Jack was playing some video game in his room and my parents were walking with Quinn's parents, Quinn and I cleaned up the kitchen and table. We did a compromise, though. I'll wash the dishes while Quinn dried them and put them away.

Not a best compromise, but still, at least Quinn is working.

"Can you turn on the TV?" I asked Quinn.

Was it weird to have a TV in the kitchen, because we do?

"Sure, what channel?" he asked me, dropping the plate that he was drying on the counter and picked up the remote on the island.

"Um…what channel is Supernatural on?" I asked him.

"CW18, but it's not Tuesday," he said.

"How about Gossip Girl?"

"No," he simply said, and switched to CSI: Los Angeles.

"What do you mean 'no'?" I glared at Quinn from the sink. "It's Gossip Girl, as in my fab. show."

"You know how inappropriate that show is?" he asked and returned to drying and putting the dishes away.

"It's not that inappropriate," I said.

"Funny, because last time I watch GG with you, some guy was making love with another girl," he reminded me. Ugh, the love scene.

"God, it's not like every episode has a love scene," I told him. "Besides it's romantic. Declaring love…finding love…"

"I'll watch it when I declare love to-" Quinn stopped mid-sentence. He started acting like I haven't heard what he just said.

Well, I heard it.

"You declare love to who?" I asked, placing my wet hands on my hips. Then it clicked. "Oh. My. God. You like someone!" I pointed a figure at him. "Quinn Jackson Hamilton likes someone!" I shrieked and bounced up and down.

"God, just announced it to the world, will you," Quinn said sarcastically. I gasped.

"You admit it!" I shrieked again and jumped up and down. Quinn just rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Oh and I will," I said, taking his offer. "I'm going to climb the hill of Anzlea Park and shout it out so that the whole world knows that Quinn Jackson Hamilton likes someone!"

"Oh god," he muttered, rolling his eyes. I laughed and returned to finishing the last set of dishes.

"So who's the lucky girl?" I asked him.

"Yeah, like I'm going to tell you," he snorted and stacked the dishes into the top cabinets.

"I am your best friend, mister," I said.

"Still not going to tell you," he sang the words and I grew impatient.

"Fine, be like that," I pouted and turned to the dirty dishes.

"You're still my best friend," he said, wrapping his arms around my waist and whispered into my ear. I leaned my head back and looked straight into his blue eyes.

"Are you going to tell me who she is?" I asked sweetly.

Quinn laughed. "No," he said. I pouted again and pushed him away.

"I do not allow best friends who keep secrets from me wrapped their arms around my waist," I told him. He laughed.

"You'll get over it," he laughed and came behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist again. This time, I didn't push him away, because I was starting to be comfortable with his arms around me. "So how about you?" he asked me.

"Me what?" I said, as I finished off the last dish. I pushed Quinn away so that I could clean my hand on the towel on the island.

"Who do you like?" he asked me. I laughed at him and turned off the TV. "I don't find that question funny," he said, faintly smirking.

"I don't like anyone," I told him.

"Really?" he asked, smirking.

"Yep, no one in my life right seems to fit the perfect description of what I want in a guy," I told him.

"And what do you want in a guy?" he pressed the subject. I just shrugged and headed to the living room and sat on the couch. Quinn followed suit and sat next to me. I flipped the TV on to Gossip Girl.

"I don't know," I said at first. "I want a guy that I can joke around with as a best friend, and be all romantic like a boyfriend, I guess."

"Uh-huh…" Quinn hummed. I looked over at him, but he wasn't looking at me. He wasn't even looking at the TV. His eyes seemed distant. He must be daydreaming about his anonymous girl.

Then a thought hit me.

That girl must be something for Quinn to not have declared his feelings for her.
