Chapter 1
Mika already had everything planned out. He would spend 5 years to graduate from an institute, another 5 years specialising at a training centre until he turns 25, and afterward, spend the remainder of his years working in a job that could support the family and simple life he yearns for.
He never would have guessed that his father's transfer, would have changed his plan so much.
Slinging the bag over his shoulder, Mika sighed for the umpteenth times of the day as he climbed down from his bicycle. Knowing that the owners of the whispering mouths and staring eyes had just come out of cars, that must have cost a small fortune.
'Patience Mika, two more years and this nightmare will be over.' The thought came, giving Mika a small sense of relief even at the simplistic thought.
Heck, like it was his wish to be thrown in an institute that looks(looked) more like castle; rather than a place of learning. It was because of his father's transfer, and in a way, promotion as the head of his department.
The news was given to the family a month before, that his father was being transferred to the main company. The old man had looked so happy that Mika was also happy for him. Along with his two younger sisters, they even had dinner together at a very expensive and elegant restaurant, to celebrate. And it was there that his father broke the news.
That Mika was going to have to transfer schools.
Mika had guessed that, seeing how Nellx, the new place, was a few cities farther than their current one, but he hadn't guessed the thing that his father was going to say next.
That he was going to transfer to Leriz Institute of Nellx. A very established institute, famous for producing countless powerful Elementalists and Elites. Well, the institute was also famous for being one of the few institutes that even have elites in the first place. As well as being well-known for being a school for the rich and famous. Even if this reason was more unofficial.
His father's transfer had a few perks; the increase of salary being one of the highest, then the increase of the importance of his position. But, there was only one perk that really concerned Mika; that any employees under the main company would be allowed one child to be supported by the company to attend LION.
In simple word, Mika will be going there on scholarship.
Him, a boy of 17 years old, with a wish to just graduate, and lead a simple life. Now he was being pushed to study in a institute with fees that would cost his dad a year's salary, and he would be going there under the ticket of a scholarship. Like he was nothing more than a charity cases.
Needless to say things were not so simple now.
Mika sighed again, ignoring everything as he made his way inside the institute, and the first thing that caught his attention was how sparkly the floor was. He actually halted at the front doors, hard wood from the top to the bottom, to stare at the floor and the interior.
Even the top of the hallway was sparkly, though this was probably due to the chandeliers hanging on the ceiling, fire floating from each candle hold.
And Mika heard more snickering from the students walking near him, most probably because he was just standing there, mouth agape.
'How should I know this school would have so much money that it would have chandeliers?!' Mika protested in his mind, trying hard not to frown as he abruptly made his way inside. Wanting to take refuge inside the administration office, thinking that the adults inside the office would be more cooperative and friendly.
Well, they were at first, when they saw him coming in. The smiles looked almost genuine, before Mika handed in his recruitment letter, that clearly stated that he was under a scholarship of the company. A few seconds pass as the female reads the letter, the smile fading as the words flows inside her mind. And the smile disappears. Replaced with something akin to a condescending nature.
Mika would never had thought that an expression could changed that fast.
"Right. You're the new guy." She didn't even bothered to hide her bored tone as she stamped something on the paper and held it between her two fingers as if it would stained her fake finger nails.
"This is your new schedule." She places the papers on the table, his schedule as well as his locker number and other semi-helpful information, before turning her attention towards another clerk behind her, obviously showing that she wasn't going to waste any more time on him.
"Thanks. You have been much help." Mika said, unable to bit down the sarcasm as he took the paper. The female turned as though she was going to glare, but said nothing, instead she just hit him with her previous smile.
This time though, it wasn't directed to Mika anymore. Rather, to the male standing behind of him.
"Oh, you are in the same class as me for first period." The boy said, Mika could feel the boy's eyes over his shoulder, looking at the paper on the table.
Mika turned around immediately, and was greeted with a flaming red hair with a few strands of pink. 'Weird combination', Mika thought but didn't say, because he was momentarily stunned by the smiling face. The first genuine smiling face that he had seen since he stepped onto the school's ground.
And with the same effect as a yawn, Mika found himself sporting a smile as well.
"Should I show you where it is? I can also show you to your locker." The male said, pointing to the papers.
"That would be great." Mika said, before raising a hand. "Mika Gantx."
"Alvine Harts. H-A-R-T-S, and not H-E-A-R-T-S."
"I will keep that in mind." Mika said, letting out a chuckle.
Technically, they were not lockers.
They were rooms. One separate building of 6 stories, with rooms for the students to put their stuff. The last and the second to last floor are for the bigger, and consequently, more expensive, rooms, and the first floor for the cheapest and smallest.
Well, it was the smallest on the scales as compared to the other rooms but it was more than enough for Mika. The room was slightly bigger than half of his room at home. There was a simple chair and table at the wall with the window facing outside, a small wardrobe fit for a few clothes, and a water dispenser by one side.
Mika spent almost a minute looking at his room, with Alvine at his side, watching his expression with curious and slightly amused eyes.
"You are going to catch a fly if you let your mouth hang open like that." The red-head said, chuckling slightly as he leaned on the doorframe, his eyes still on Mika
"I-I just.." Mika was truly lost for words right now.
LION was not a boarding school, but just an institute that had classes, as early as 8 in the morning and as late as 6 in the evening, but the students still got a room
"If this confounded you so much, you'll probably faint when you see the room at the highest level."
"I don't doubt you at all." Mika said, finally gaining back his ability to speak as he walked inside, putting his bag on top of the table and turned to look around before looking back at Alvine.
"So, which floor are you?" Mika asked, cocking an eyebrow as he watched Alvine. The male requited the gesture, his arms crossing together as he looked at Mika with an amused expression in his dark brown eyes. A question of 'why' played across his face.
"Because I'm pretty sure that your room is not on this floor. Because you look bemused, when you saw how small my room is."
Alvine stared at him, before he laughed at the answer; grabbing the attention of the few students that were walking behind him since he was still leaning on the open doorframe.
"Fair enough, I guess. My room is on the second floor. The floor for the most expensive rooms in this institute, that is not for the elites, if you want to play it that way." Mika gave a nod when he heard this; he had pretty much guessed that Alvine was quite rich, seeing from the elegant way he carried himself despite the casual air that he has.
"And we have a bed, as well as air- conditioning there." At this, Mika rolled his eyes, questioning the need of such luxury for a student. Alvine laughed again when he saw Mika's expression.
"Come on. We better get to class before you see something else that makes you stunned." Alvine said, his tone good-natured, so that Mika had to laugh at what he had just said.
"Not my fault if this school is so rich that it decides that it should have chandeliers." Mika rolled his eyes again at the thought, before going to grab his bag on the table.
"Well, we have a lot of rich alumni's that don't know where to spend their money, other than giving it away." Mika gave a small laugh at that. "But, it's all good though. The new facilities are great. Especially; the training room."
"It better be, with how much they must have paid for it."
The conversation continued for a while, before they finally reached their first class; History of Elements.
"Ready to step into your new world?" Alvine asked, the grin on his face almost looked smug as if he couldn't wait to see how Mika would react on his first day.
"Bring it on, dude." Mika was just about to open the door when Alvine stopped him.
"I just remember something important." The red-head said, grabbing Mika by the wrist and pulling him away from the door. "You know LION has Elites right?" It was common knowledge, but Mika nodded nonetheless. "Well, one of them is our age and in our class" That one was not common knowledge and Mika frowned.
"Well, the thing is.. Zefrix – the elite – is quite.. how do I put this.."
"Rich? Elite-ish? Stuck-up? Weird?" Mika offered in an amused way, just to be glared at Alvine, a sign telling him to shut up.
"Dominant."
Mika wasn't expecting that, but he wasn't surprised. With how high an Elites status was, as well as their wealth, Mika wasn't surprised that one or more let that power get to them.
"He's somewhat of a dominant person, but he is nice. So, just, be.. normal with him."
Normal. Again, Mika hadn't expected that. He had expected Alvine to tell him to bow or kneel in front of the male. But, he hadn't expected Alvine to tell him to act normal.
"Normal?" Mika offered back, looking sceptical. Alvine just nodded.
"Normal."
"I could do normal." Even if he was still sceptical of what Alvine was saying.
"Great." Mika could hear the sarcasm in the voice, but it was the amused kind as Alvine opened the door with Mika walking behind him afterward.
"Yo, Al, who's that with you?" One of the boys that was sitting on top of their tables shouted, eyes on Mika, questioning and somewhat judging. Though, the latter could just be Mika's own assumption.
"New guy." Alvine answered simply, his hand went to ruffle Mika's brown hair.
Mika scowled at him. "I'm not a pet, dude."
There was a loud 'thump' and the class was silent as all eyes went to the scene of the crime. Where a male with a bright red hair, highlighted with strands of purple, had slammed his books on his table and was now glaring with his light blue eyes at both Alvine and Mika.
The elite. Zefrix
Mika didn't even have to be introduced to know that. The feeling inside of him was enough to tell him that. There was also a slight feeling of guilt inside of him and the need to explain the situation to Zefrix. But, this feeling was so outrageous and weird that Mika decided not to pay any mind to it.
"Zefrix, this is Mika. He's new here, so play nice." Alvine said, his voice calm and almost cheerful. Even if Mika was sure that, even he, was surprised with what Zefrix had done just a minute ago.
The only response he got was an even more heated glare before Zefrix stood up, slammed his books inside his bag and walked out of the room from the back door.
A minute of very cold silence covered the room before Mika finally turned to look at Alvine.
"Normal?"
Alvine just sighed, as if he himself hadn't expected that to happen.
