Chapter 1: Part 1
I sat down on a bench in front of the school, and looked up at the dark clouds that formed in the sky. Pulling my coat over my ears as a gust of wind swept throughout the campus, I mumbled,"Looks like it might rain." Sighing, I looked up to see my best friend, James, coming over; he sat on the bench next to me.
"The rain will make football practice fun won't it?" James said.
"Yeah it will," I said still not making eye contact with him. " it makes the game more interesting, especially when the freshmen are going to be practice with us." James let out a laugh. My phone started to vibrate as it played 'I'm Sexy and I Know It'. I grabbed it from my back pocket and looked to see who it was. It happened to be Stacy, my 'at the moment' girlfriend. I answered.
"Hey baby, how's it going?"
"Just fine, you?" Her sweet voice asked.
"Good, I'm on my way to class, see you there"
"Bye, love you!"
"Love you too." I said hanging up.
"So, what number is she?" James asked.
"This week? Or this month?"
"This month," James said.
"Lucky number 7," I told him. A grin was painted on my face.
"That must be some kind of a record," James said. "Come on, lets go to class"
"Since when do you care about being on time?"
"I don't." James looked down at the grass.
"Oh, I get it," I teased. "you want to talk to Amber, don't you."
"NO!" James said punching me in the arm. "I don't like her, how many times do I have to tell you that before it gets through that thick head of yours? Now, can we go?"
I picked up my Nike backpack and slung it over my shoulder.
"Sure." I started to walk to class with James right on my heels. Not soon after I began walking I remembered the call from earlier and that I had meant to break up with… What was her name again? Sydney? Oh well, I'd figure it out.
When they got to class I took my usual seat in the very back (so I couldn't catch any nerd germs) next to James. He must of gotten pretty tired of hearing Mrs. Cruff's nazily voice because he passed me a note, he only passed me notes when he was absolutely desperate.
Hey, want to make a bet? – J
I stared at the paper for a moment, pondering my decision on the outcome of his said bet. Yes, I do think twice before acting. Sometimes.
Sure, what is it? – M
I passed the paper back and rested my head on my arm. I wanted to know what kind of bet James would want to make, his usual bets consisted of either pranking the other jocks or stealing Monsters from the City Mart about three blocks down from the school.
I bet you can't get a girl to fall for you – J
Well this was certainly new. It was easy. Childs play if you will. Of course I could get a girl to fall in love with me. I'm Mike Collins.
Ok, I accept your bet. Who is it? - M
It's that nerd girl Katie Marks – J
So much for not catching nerd grems...
And what do I get if I win? – M
If you win, I will go to school in only my underwear – J
Deal! – M
Oh, and to win the bet, she has to say 'I love you' – J
Ok, no problem. Be ready to lose – M
The bell rang for us to go tour next class; I went to the door and waited. Katie walked to the front of the classroom; I went up to her and said, in my most caring voice.
"Hey, you're Katie, right?" she ignored me and kept walking to the door; I walked in front of her, blocking her way to the exit.
"You look like you could use some help," I said taking some of her books from her.
"I'm fine, really," she said taking the books back. I moved closer to Katie and gently laid a hand on her shoulder. Katie's whole body tensed as I came closer to her. I closed the gap between the few inches that separated my lips from hers. The kiss didn't last long; as soon as I kissed her she had shoved me as hard as she possibly could. Which was a lot coming from a girl. Especially a nerdy one.
"What the heck did you do that for?! Creep!" She shouted at me. I didn't say anything; I just stood there, in shock. I had never had a girl not want to kiss me! Katie picked up her books and left.
"This isn't going to be easy," I mumbled, rubbing my fingers through my dirty blonde hair. Then a grin pulled on the corner of my lips, "but I always enjoy a challenge."
