Heroes of Time
Jason and the Argonauts Part I
I: The Fate of Tyro
Her name was Tyro. She was the daughter of King Salmoneus, founder and first ruler of Elis, and his wife, Alcidice, daughter of King Aleus of Arcadia. With this wife, Tyro was the only child born, and with her is where our story begins, in the kingdom of Iolcos, and King Salmoneu's brother, Cretheus.
Tyro, both in rumor and in truth, was a beauty that spurned desire in the hearts of many men, including the Gods. She was the picture of grace and poise, and righteous of heart. A daughter of kings, she was, and fated to live with and bear only kings and heroes.
But, like every myth, her story would take a turn for dark. Her life with her father and mother shattered in the eve of her mother's death death, when Tyro was only thirteen years old. Alcidice died of unknown causes, and it left a bitter hole in the heart of her husband, the king.
Tyro's grief shook her to the core, and her heart broke when, not long after days of mourning for her mother were over, her father married a second woman, a woman with an iron heart and resolve, Sidero.
"I will not baby and pamper you like your mother did," Sidero would tell a teenage Tyro, "you are becoming a woman now, and soon you will marry. Should you embarrass your father's name in any way, you will answer to me. And heed my words, girl, that is not something you will come out of unscathed."
Tyro's gentle heart began to dissolve, and soon she found her exterior to be as iron clad as her stepmother's.
And so, with all of these tragedies and misfortunes haunting Tyro with her every step, this is where our story begins, right in the heart of Thessaly, in the kingdom of Iolcos.
