GREEDY DEMON

The tinkle of the shop bell sounded as the little girl stepped into the shop, jingling her tiny purse bulging with money. Slowly, she browsed through all the antique dolls on a dusty wooden shelf. There were three in a row, all identical except for one thing:

Two were fat, one was thin.

She puzzled over that for a while, but she was distracted by the sound of footsteps behind her. She whirled around.

" Hello, miss. How can I help you?" The shopkeeper asked kindly.

Being rather rich and pompous, she pointed to the dolls in a row.
"Thin one." She muttered.

The shopkeeper's gaze darted between her outstretched arm and the doll. He seemed to gulp, before regaining his posture.

"Are you sure, miss?" He asked. She nodded her head curtly. Tentatively, the shopkeeper's fingers closed around the doll's waist and he handled the china toy as if it were on fire. Placing her on the counter, he adjusted his glasses and looked at the little girl. He glanced at the doll repeatedly as she handed over a wad of money. As the little girl took the doll, he leaned forward and whispered urgently.

"Listen, child. What ever you do, always put her back in her cage." He handed over. Grey, metal barred cage and she fumbled with the lock before putting the doll in it reluctantly.

Nodding, she walked out of the antique shop, the cage swinging by her side. She couldn't wait to play with her. She would call her dolly. That's it! Dolly suits her, with her rosy cheeks and sweet smile, two teeth visible through her red lips.

When she got home, she immediately fussed over Dolly in the playroom. Brushing her hair, having a tea party, she had lots of fun. Soon, it was bedtime, and she sadly left her doll sprawled on the floor of the playroom and ran upstairs. The doll's wide smile seemed to grow...

The little girl sat up, heart pounding in fear. Was that the sound of someone singing? She stranded to hear the words. The voice a sticky sweet, high and soft. It was a girly voice, and it could only Belon to something small. The voice was getting louder now.

"Little girl, I'm on the first step..." The voice sang. The little girl cluthed her blankets in fright. She heard a thump, and the voice came again.

"Little girl, I'm on the fourth step..." Two more bangs, an her voice kept humming softly.

"Little girl, I'm on the tenth step..." The little girl tried to ignore the voice and she tossed and turned, unable to sink into sleep.

"Little girl, I'm in your parents' bedroom..." The little girl's eyes widened with fright as a scream resounded, searing straight into her heart as mind. There were sounds of knocking and the creak of floorboards. She could hear soft footsteps outside her door, and it slowly swung open. He was paralysed with fear an she shut her eyes tight. The soft voice called out:

"Little girl, look at me..." She sang. The little girl made a mistake of looking and the white face of Dolly stared back at her, her eyes blood red, her two teeth elongated into fangs, horns protruding from her dark brown hair...

"My name is Dolly the Demon and I'm going to kill you..." Dolly sang.

A piercing scream echoed through the night.

Rhea knocked on the door twice.

"Anyone home? Reasie?" She called out. Hearing nothing, she went around the back, and saw the door was unlocked. She entered, feeling frightened, and went up the stairs to see if her friend Teresa was there.

To her horror, she saw nails pounded into each step of the second staircase, and it snaked into a bedroom, out along the corridor and into Teresa's bedroom. Rhea felt the seeds of dead plant themselves into her stomach. She opened the door, and the bed was empty. All she could see was a doll sitting nicely on the bed, right where the trail ha ended.

Moving closer, she saw a miniature dagger next to her, and a small note that read:

I AM FULL NOW

Trembling, Rhea stumbled back, and ran out of the room. She knew why the house was empty.

Behind her, Dolly, now plump, smiled an eerie smile...
