This is a companion novel going on the same time line as The Healing Process.

A few weeks after Carli's Dad left Carli began going to her best friend Kally's house after school every day. Carli's mom got a job. When she was in a relationship with Carli's Dad, he brought home all the money. He made her quit her job when she got pregnant. The first time.
Kally's parents loved Carli. They thought of her as their own daughter in a way. When they found out that her Dad left, they were happy. They didn't know that he abused them. They just hated her parents. Despised them. They saw the dad caring for the daughter. They saw the mom taking pills and full of smiles. They saw the decrepit house and Carli's perfect clothes always in fashion. They saw Carli happy. They were jealous.
Carli's family was poor but they seemed to always make sure that Carli was the happiest girl alive. Kally had 2 older brothers, 1 older sister, 2 younger sisters and 1 younger brother. Her parents sometimes forgot she was there. They lived in big house and had more money than they needed. Yet still Kally wore hand me downs. They had a lot of free time yet they barely saw Kally. Mommy took pills to keep her calm and daddy took pills to make him happy. One advantage of phantom parents is that they never yelled at her. One disadvantage was they never cared enough to yell. Her parents were jealous that Carli, who reminded them of Kally, was happy and loved, even if her parents were poor. They didn't even know what Kally felt like because they didn't care, even though they were rich.
That's why they were happy when her dad left. They saw it as the happy family falling apart. They knew that if the leading patriarch left, the mother would fall apart, leaving Carli to rely on them. It gave them a chance to have a new daughter to love. They knew it was sick of them to favor a stranger's kid over their own. They knew it was sick to be happy that an innocent little girl's father left because it made them happier and more satisfied.
Her parents weren't the only ones that were jealous. Kally was jealous. She was jealous of her siblings and of her best friend. Her siblings got new clothes and new toys every week. Kally only got things when the others were tired of them.

Kally, 8, was insignificant. She was the only girl with brown hair and her blue eyes were dull. She wasn't in any clubs or on any teams. She was particularly exceptional except for the fact she was unexceptional.
