"I don't think we should be doing this, guys." Jack warned. He looked around the room, cautiously and paranoid. He bit his bottom lip, like he usually does when he's nervous or anxious.
"Don't be such a pussy," Lucas teased, punching Jack in the arm playfully. "This stuff isn't real, anyway." He waved his hands in front of his face, as if he was casting some mystical spell. "Smoke, and mirrors, and all that shit."
Jack rubbed his shoulder tenderly. He sighed to himself still thinking that it was a really bad idea, but he couldn't mask and deny his own curiosity on the whole prospect. Besides, he admired Lucas' zeal and sense of adventure. He decided maybe it would be better, or at least much more amusing, to just entertain Lucas' ambitions for a moment.
Then, there was loud steps, like heavy boots walking up the stairs from the basement. Sammy's head peeked out from the staircase as she lifted a small and thin box above her head, victoriously while she mimicked a little cackle.
"I found it!" She announced proudly in a sing-song sort of way.
She came towards the table, setting the box down between the lit candles. The flame of each of the candles waved back and forth, whipping against the surrounding air in a dance of sporadic movements and gyrations. The power had gone out not too long ago, and the three companions decided to continue keeping each other entertained by a candlelit game. But soon, they would learn that this was one thing that should not to be played with.
Sammy looked up at Jack and Lucas with her sweet, yet mischievous smile. "Do you guys wanna play?"
"Come on, Sam! Hurry it up!" Lucas whined, getting excited and impatient.
Jack smiled to himself. They're like a 5 year on early Christmas morning. He thought to himself, looking at how their eyes lit up at the sight of the mysterious box.
"Calm down! You're in such a rush with everything!" Sam teases.
"Well, there's one thing I would like to take my time with!" Lucas remarks suggestively in a low voice to Sam.
Sam looks over at Lucas seductively. They come closer and begin to kiss. Jack looks away annoyed and in disgust. He had to deal with that kind of stuff all the time with those two. He was beginning to regret having both of them come up to the cabin. He avoids looking at them and goes towards the table to grab the box and begin opening it.
"You know, there's like 3 rooms in this cabin. You guys should get one!" He suggests in an annoyed tone of voice.
Sam and Lucas stop to see Jack, avoiding looking at them and taking the box. Lucas clears his throat and comes over to Jack to open up the box.
The box was slim and black. It must have not been opened in a quite a long time since it was coated in a pretty thick amount of dust. The box seemed to be made of leather and it opened up like a book. Lucas opened it up and inside they saw a board. The board was brown color, somewhat cafe-au-lait, maybe a bit darker. Each corner of the board was black and the board was covered with a few words. There were also the letters of the alphabet and numbers. Underneath the board was a planchette, a rounded triangular piece of wood with circular piece of glass in the center of it.
It was an Ouija Board.
Jack took a deep breath. He still wasn't too thrilled about the idea of communicating with the dead. He's heard all the stories, none of which ended happily ever after. But even then, he couldn't contain his own curiosity on the prospect.
Sam and Lucas set up the Ouija board as Jack thought about all the ways that things could go bad. He sat down at the table once everything was set up.
It can't be real. Just like Lucas said, it's all smoke and mirrors and bullshit. He thought to himself.
"Alright then, let's see how this goes!" Lucas says, rubbing his hands together excitedly.
They all put their hands on the planchette, making sure to keep their fingers out of the way of the magnifying glass. They all looked at each other expectantly and slightly confused at where to go from there.
"Maybe I should act as the medium." Sam offers.
The boys agreed.
Sam took a breath. "Okay," She says to herself. She, then, looks around the room cautiously.
"If there are any spirits, come and speak with us." Sam said aloud to no one in particular.
Silence.
They sat there for several moments, only hearing the creaking of the old cabin and the rustling of the leaves of the trees, among which the cabin stood.
"This is fucking stupid!" Jack exclaimed.
Lucas shushed Jack hurriedly. They all looked around, eerily. Something about the energy within the room changed, like this sudden sense of dread and darkness had fallen upon it. The creaking of the house slowly turned into groaning and moaning, leaves outside began to rustle much more violently. The temperature of the room dropped without warning.
And then, suddenly, silence.
WHOOSH!
Without warning, the flame of each of the candles began to rage, the fire roared and was reaching toward the ceiling. Voices, whispers of a thousand people, echoed around the little room. The temperature of the room dropped so low that the three friends were now shivering, and their breaths were now visible.
The planchette began to tremble violently and it tore the attention of the three teens back to the Ouija Board. The planchette began to zip across the board angrily displaying each letter as it passed.
"What the fuck is this?! This shit is unreal!" Lucas exclaimed.
The planchette continued its rampage, zipping all over the board, showing a letter of a word as it did so.
J-A-C-K
M-U-R-D-E-R
B-E-T-R-A-Y-E-D
R-E-V-E-N-G-E
The planchette suddenly stopped. And then flew across the room, tearing itself away from the board and from the fingers of the teens, now pale with fear. They all stared at each other, wide eyed.
Sam, eyes beginning to fill with tears and she her breathing begins to hiccup. "What the fuck was that?! What just happened?!"
"I don't know, but that was crazy... I think we should just leave." Lucas suggested, fear rising in his voice.
Jack quickly rose from his seat and stumbled backwards to the ground, screaming in horror.
"Jack!" Sam called.
"Dude, calm down!" Lucas hushed.
"NO! NO, GET AWAY!" Jack screamed. He crawled away and ran into the kitchen.
Sam and Lucas followed him to try to calm him down. When they walked in, they immediately they stopped at the sight of Jack holding up a butchers knife. Jack's eyes were wild and his hand shook, holding up the knife to his neck.
Lucas swallowed and began to speak. "Jack," Lucas took a step forward. "You need to relax."
"Shut up! Get away from me! You can't take me alive!" Jack screamed.
In one quick motion, Jack sliced his throat. He made a gurgling sound as blood spurted out of this neck and leaked from his mouth. He crumpled to the ground, drowning in a puddle of blood.
"Oh my god... Oh shit!" Lucas said to himself in complete disbelief.
Then, there was a shrill, blood curdling scream. Sam ran out of the room, screaming hysterically and hyperventilating. She cried and wailed in complete panic and fear. She ran, her foot got caught in the leg of the table, and she tripped, falling over onto a glass coffee table nearby.
Her screams suddenly halted.
Lucas ran over to look at her.
"Sam?" Lucas called, cautiously
No response.
Lucas rolled her over onto her back. "Oh, fuck! No!"
A sharp piece of glass stuck out of her chest. The glass of the coffee table had broken and a piece went straight through her heart. Sam, eyes wide in fear, stared up at Lucas, cold and dead, a dark-red blood stain growing on her shirt.
Lucas giggled lightly to himself. Then, his giggle grew into a chuckle. Soon, he was laughing, and then roaring hysterically. He walked back into the kitchen. Still laughing maniacally, he stepped over Jack's body behind the kitchen counter. He went to the farthest corner of the kitchen and pulled out a drawer. Staring into the drawer, his laughter slowly died down.
He pulled out a gun and stared at it intently. He shot off the safety and held the barrel to his head.
Silence.
BANG!
In one single night, all sanity was lost.
