Very short one-shot I wrote for my Creative Writing final. Btw, HAPPY (belated) NEW YEAR! I really should work on my other stories...

He was Electron. She was Proton. Following her footsteps was Neutron.

Neutron stuck to her like sticky caramel. She didn't seem to mind. In fact, she seemed to enjoy his company. They were always seen together, never far from one another.

It was a match made possible by the universe around them. A match almost worthy of a Nobel Prize.

Key word: almost.

The Neutron was the glue that kept the Atom together. In this case, the relationship itself. She was Proton, and was therefore Positive. If she was happy, so be it.

He, however, was a different case altogether.

He was Electron. He was attracted to Proton ever so much. How could he not? Proton was beautiful. She radiated an aura that made one feel happier and more… positive… then before.

He, on the other hand, suffered from negative energy. Call it depression, if you would.

He was too self-conscious, too stressed, too afraid of the things he wished he could reach out to.

The voices inside him mocked him, jeered him with cruel words. 'Why can't you do it?' 'Why are you so pitiful?'

Stop it, he wanted to say. Stop. But the words clamored around in his head. Was there a way to end it? Could he really end it?

"Are you okay?"

And for a moment, it all stopped.

Light eyes met dark one, and the Electron felt his breath escape him.

What was it they said? Opposites attract?

It was fruitless, he knew. She was with Neutron inside their Atom. He was just a lone Electron.

For now, it was enough. He harbored an attraction. She had latched herself to Neutron. It need not go any further.

Was he happy? Was he truly content with the way things were?

It had to be. Science declared it to be so.

They all had a relationship with one another. Only the Electron knew all. After all, he was the one observing the Atom from within his Cloud.
