Chapter 1 - Sadie

"Tuly, why do all the girls seem to hate me?" It was a question that I'd asked many times and Tulip would never give me a straight answer. Mostly she'd complain that she had a lot on her mind and she couldn't answer my questions so I figured now was the perfect moment to ask. She seemed relaxed, lying down in the shade of the willow by the river so I figured why not now.

"They don't Sadie." She said simply, her eyes still closed, arms folded on her stomach.

"Liar." I laughed. She opened her eyes slowly and rolled over to face me.

"Sadie, you are such a guy," I couldn't really argue with that. I'd been told I was a Tom babe, whatever the hell that was, "They don't hate you. They're jealous. If you can't explain why, you'll just have to figure it out." And with that she rolled over with a certain finality. Tulip was my best friend but she could be so damn cryptic sometimes. It felt like she was speaking a different language, one that had many different meanings whilst I figured that words should just mean what they are. Tulip once told me that fine never meant fine, it always meant something different given the context. All I could say to that was "Bloody words" which made her smirk a little.

To be honest, I knew that I'd never be able to figure out why the girls either hated me or where jealous. I couldn't think of what they'd be jealous. I was just Sadie. Besides, they could all do makeup and wear dressed without them riding up or wriggling everywhere. They all had manageable hair whereas mine was long and wild and seemed to always want to escape any braids or clips like a crazy convict. This is why I always opted for a low ponytail that rested on my shoulder. Plus my hair was a bright, flame orange which definitely wasn't good for blending in with the crowd. I always stuck out like a carrot amongst peas. Most of all, they could understand the cryptic language Tulip spoke, that consisted of undertones, complex facial expressions and unexplained rules that I was expected to know as a girl. I had more to be jealous of them, not the other way around. Tulip was probably just being cryptic again.

I looked over at Tulip again who seemed to be asleep or at least pretending. She was also a pretty good actress: all the girls seemed to be judging by how many orgasms they'd believably faked and fake smiles they'd given. If she was asleep I figured I could go for a walk. That's what I wanted to do in the countryside anyway but Tulip was wearing tall, pointy heels and had complained, causing us to sit down at the nearest tree possible. I slowly rose from the ground, being careful not to alert her attention. I was standing up and she was still sleeping so I decided to creep away, quietly, so that she wouldn't wake up -

"Sadie, what the fuck are you doing?" Tulip's voice broke me out of my spy mentality.

"Oh you were asleep, so I figured I'd go for a walk."

"A Sadie walk?" She said half smiling.

"Tuly, I don't know what that is."

"A Sadie walk is a hike because we both know you walk for hours. When you go hiking with the boys, you're gone for a days sometimes."

I noticed her expression seemed to sour a little when she mentioned my hikes with the boys. Maybe she wanted to come along? I had invited her, so had her boyfriend, Jack. She always complained and would tell Jack that it was fine if he went too and she was glad he was having fun with her friends. To tell the truth, I sometimes preferred hanging out with Jack and the guys rather than with Tulip and her friends. The guys were much less complex and said it how it was. We would play darts and table football and just hang out more whereas the girls seemed to prefer talking for hours which I found kind of dull.

"Well, what do you want to do then, Tuly?" I asked her, coming back to sit besides her.

"Can't you just sit and relax for a bit?" She asked, "I'm tired, I've had a lot going on recently so it would be nice not to do anything."

"I s'pose. I just do a lot of relaxing, it's nice to actually do something." I replied which was true. Most days, in between my freelance work, I would just watch reruns of the football or rugby in my pajamas so it was nice to go for walks or do stuff with Tulip, not just sit.

"Do you want to go Sadie?" Tulip said, not looking at me, simply looking up at the willow canopy above.

"Well, I mean I said I'd play darts with the guys at the bar at 10ish but it's only 5."

"No, not 'do you need to go?'. Do you want to go?" She said, still looking away.

"I did have some work to do but I can stay if you want..." I trailed off. Judging from Tulip's expression there was a right and a wrong answer here and I'd chosen the wrong one.

"Fine." Damn that word again. I didn't have to speak girl to know that my best friend was pissed off at me.

"No, Tuly it's fine we can stay. I don't have to finish the app for ages." But she'd already started to get up and pack up our plates and cutlery into the hamper. She stepped of the blanket for a second and her heel sunk into the ground. She swore under her breath and pulled it out, "Tuly, you don't have to..."

"No, it's fine, Sadie."

"Tuly, what's wrong?"

"Nothing, Sadie, nothing's wrong. We can go, I don't want you to be bored." I didn't really know what to say to that. She looked expectantly at me for an answer but I had nothing to say. If only I spoke girl like the others.
