Cookies & Kisses
Author notes: This is my first shounen-ai/Yaoi one shot, ever. It's simply light hearted fluff, focusing solely one the budding relationship between two boys. So, if you came here expecting to see them doing the deed rather than form a genuine and gentle bond, then you are at the wrong place. So, without further delay, enjoy.
Devin Shields never thought he would see the day. The day that his attraction to cookies and sweets led him to this very moment. The moment of realization that he was in love with the one magical chef responsible for cooking such delights. The moment where he took a bold step and entered into the ever popular bakery shop, Sweet Tooth, to find his crush.
Thankfully, it wasn't as crowded like yesterday. Today was a Sunday, so there isn't a lot of commotion around town. Devin sighed with relief, glad that he didn't have to deal with long lines. From the looks of it, there wasn't a single person inside. Was it just a coincidence or a miracle from up above? Devin decided it was the latter.
Before he approached the front counter, Devin straightened out his blue tartan shirt and tan pants. He didn't worry too much about his ash blonde hair, though. It was combed down straight, only reaching down to his neck. With a deep breath, the boy screwed up his courage and walked towards the counter, where the bakery workers would appear to meet with their next customer.
Devin reached out towards the small bell over by the counter and rang it twice. Now, there was no other choice but to wait it out. As he waited, the 18-year-old began to think of what to say. He didn't want to sound like a stuttering fool, like a few days ago. Despite the other's kind assurance, Devin felt so embarrassed that he practically ran out of the bakery shop, trying to keep his dignity in check. Back then, he was scared. Not this time. He was ready now and prepared for any possible outcome.
However, his train of thought was abruptly interrupted when a kind, friendly voice greeted him from the front counter.
"Hello, sir. Welcome to Sweet Tooth! What would you like today?"
Devin nearly jumped out of his pants at the sound of the familiar voice behind him. He turned around and saw the right person he wanted to see. Devin's dark blue eyes stared right back at a pair of light brown orbs. The lad who greeted him only a year older than him, sporting short brown hair. He wore a simple chef uniform, excluding the hat. He always greeted people with a kind and courteous smile. There was little deceit in his eyes either, only showing friendliness and optimism.
That smile was a blessing and a curse, Devin thought. He would always lose himself within those shiny teeth or alluring brown eyes that seemed to beckon him further to a different world.
"Umm…hi! You're Jacob, right?" Devin asked, regaining his sense of thought.
"Oh, yes, that's me," Jacob replied, pointing at his name tag. "May I help you?"
"S-sure."
"We have some new white chocolate chip cookies on sale. They're straight from out of the oven, too."
Devin shifted his eyes to the cookie tray next to Jacob. Indeed, the tray was proudly displaying fresh basked white chocolate chip cookies for anyone, interested or not, to see.
"Sounds tasty. I think I'll give them a try."
Jacob nodded.
"How much would you like?"
"4 cookies, please," Devin replied.
The other boy scooped up four cookies into a small plastic bag and wrapped it up with a white bow. He gave it to his customer, his bright smile never fading.
"That'll be $6 dollars, sir."
The ash blonde teen dug through his pockets and managed to find the right amount of cash to give. Jacob gently took it and placed it inside the cash register.
"Thank you. Is there anything else you need?"
Devin swallowed a big lump in his throat before he continued. This was it! Now was the time to ask this pastry god out! There's no turning back now.
"Yes, I do. Umm, you might have forgotten or something, but, I'm Devin. I came in here before."
Jacob raised an eyebrow in confusion. "Oh?"
"Y-yeah, I'm the one who ran out in a hurry. It was during…that incident."
Just then, realization hit Jacob quick as he clasped his hands together.
"Oh! Right. You're the kid from a week ago. The one who spilled his coffee."
Devin blushed lightly, hating the very mention of it. But, there was no other way to explain it.
"It was my dumbass friend's fault for that," Devin admitted. "He wouldn't stop pestering me and I spilled my coffee on my brand new outfit."
"But, you weren't burned, right?" Jacob asked.
"No, I'm fine."
"Well, that's good to know."
"T-thanks. But, I still have something else I wanted to ask you."
The bakery shop employee titled his head slightly and then shrugged.
"Go on, I don't bite."
'Well, I'm hoping you do', Devin thought. No, don't play around. Now is your chance. With a deep breath, the ash blonde boy finally asked,
"Y-you wouldn't happen to have any p-plans over next week, r-right? I was wondering we can h-hang out at the park or s-something. We should get to know each other and stuff, since we see each other practically every day."
There, he said! He finally asked Jacob out! Now it was time for the answer that would determine everything. If it was a positive answer, then, he would most likely accomplish the mission. However, if it was a negative response, then mission failed. Of course he didn't want to even think about the negative outcome right now. There was a daunting silence that nearly left Devin anxious as he watched his crush rub his chin in deep thought.
Just then…
Jacob nodded, with a small smile.
"Alright, why not?"
Devin could not believe his ears. Did he just say yes? He did, didn't he? Was his dreams finally realized? He has to make sure, of course. Devin didn't want to sound demanding, not when he was able to gather the strength and willpower to maintain his composure.
"You…don't mind? I don't wish to bother you during the week days."
The other waved his hand, assuring his customer.
"Of course not. I just need to notify my boss and go from there."
The other's heart swelled with joy at that very moment. His mission was completed! He was partially expecting rejection to be on the table, but, that was not the case, thank goodness!
"R-really? That's great!" Devin exclaimed happily.
The other guy looked at him in wonder, eyes slightly wide from Devin's loud voice. Realizing his mistake, the blushing Devin collected himself after that outburst.
"I mean…I'm looking forward to seeing you, Jacob."
Jacob laughed as he patted the excitable teen on the head. "Likewise, Devin."
The two boys exchanged phone numbers right then before they parted ways. Devin exited the bakery shop, bag full of cookies in hand. In a love struck daze, the blue eyed lad walked through his small town, touching the spot on his head where Jacob ruffled up. Throughout the long walk home, there was only one thought in his mind:
'I am never, ever, washing my hair again.'
