The next day would one day be known as the Day of the Stupid Argument.
Simon looked at Andrea, who was sitting on his left.
Simon looked at Connor, who was sitting on his right.
"Um… guys? Is all okay?"
Andrea humphed while Connor rolled his eyes.
"Why aren't you sitting next to each other?"
Andrea pointedly looked away while Connor sighed..
"Did something happen?"
Andrea humphed again. "Why don't you ask Mr. Know-It-All himself?"
Simon blinked and turned to the aforementioned Mr. Know-It-All.
Connor groaned when Simon's attention focused on him. "Look, kid. It's stupid. Our English teacher gave us a pop-essay today instead of our usual work in class earlier and Andrea failed it by one point. She's convinced it's my fault."
"…That is the most I've ever heard you say at once," said Simon, gaping at the older boy.
"A-HEM!"
Simon glanced at Andrea, who he was scared to find was seething in her seat.
"It's not because it's your fault. It's because you couldn't keep your big, fat mouth shut!"
"Oh, same thing, Andrea."
Simon was utterly confused. Andrea alleviated this by then explaining it to him.
"Listen, darling. Connor here decided to ruin my perfectly given grade. He simply pointed out, after reviewing my pop-essay, that our teacher from hell gave me a grade I didn't deserve."
"No, I was trying to say he should grade both of our essays more fairly!"
"Then why was I given a lower grade upon further inspection from our teacher from hell, huh?"
"Truth be told, your essay sucked. And Ms. Williams isn't that bad."
"How dare you! I'm going to take this spork and stab you! You hear me?! STAB!"
"Come on, Andrea. It's just one essay."
"STAB, STAB, STA—"
"Are you guys going out?"
Simon turned fire-engine red and clammed up immediately when he saw the boy and girs confused expressions. He resisted the urge to run away.
He had blown it, hadn't he? His new friends would get mad at him, either saying "Of course not! Why would you ever think such a weird thing like that?" or "Why would we tell you? Stay out of our business!" Oh, dear. Oh, dearie dear.
"Are you okay, kid?" Andrea's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
"Y-Yes. I'm sorry."
His attempt at an apology was pathetic.
"For what?"
"I asked you a private questions in the middle of your argum…err… conversation. I just butted in disrespectively and queried you over something that was none of my concern. I'm sorry."
His second attempt at an apology was not as pathetic.
"Oh, that's okay," said Andrea, waving her hand as if it were nothing. She offered him a bright smile. "We shouldn't have been ignoring you anyways. We're the ones who should be sorry. And in answer to your question, yes."
Simon blinked. "Yes?"
Andrea laughed. "Yes. Connor and I have been dating for a couple of months now."
Simon's mouth dropped. "But… the argument!"
Connor chuckled. "We do that a lot."
"Yes!" said Andrea. "Arguing is, you could say, healthy. All couple in love and like should argue every once in a while. To be lovey-dovey all the time is ridiculous."
There could not have been two different people than Andrea and Connor, but they worked.
They were opposites and they were perfect together.
Their relationship was so natural Simon had trouble picking up on it. They didn't depend too much on each other and they didn't change for each other. They were themselves.
Simon felt something warm settle in his chest.
Admiration.
One day, he hoped to have a love just like theirs.
When the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, Simon was the first one out of his seat. He had a big Algebra test in his next class and he wanted to make sure he could go over his notes right before class started.
He looked up hesitantly at Andrea and Connor. "Will I see you tomorrow?"
"Of course, Silly Fishy!"
Simon beamed. He said his goodbyes and twisted his heels toward his Algebra class. On a whim, he glanced over his shoulder to look at his friends. He laughed out loud, causing nearby students to look at him strangely.
Connor's cheek sported a beautiful, fresh pink lipstick kiss on his cheek. Unfortunately for the older male, he didn't know it existed.
Ah, well.
Such is love.
