Return of the Goldfinch

It's been weeks since Jed saw Rhys, as he sat there on the swing in front of the Madspiller household. Jed gazed upon the icy frozen water as a thick fog rolled in on the horizon. He sat there pondering, thoughts of Matt filled his head. He missed Rhys, but he missed Matt even more. After everything that happened, all he cared about was wanting to see Matt again, the special one that touched his heart. But, deep down he knew he couldn't see him ever again. That time was over and the guy he once knew was gone. Jed was heartbroken, feeling lost as he sat there with a blank expression on his face, looking out into the cold abyss. It was all over, he thought. Jed's power has grown and perhaps he no longer needed his Matt anymore. He was off in another world, spending time with the villains he betrayed Jed with. The broken lake house within the dark skies, Teddy and Ciel were his so-called friends now on the other side. This distant fog was an entryway into that world. They were separated by lies, betrayal, complicated events and a broken soul. It was Jed's birthday and all he wanted was to be with Matt again, even if it was one last time. A dance, a cuddle or even just a kiss goodbye. Jed closed his eyes and made a wish with his heart. He wished they could have one last moment together...

Just then, a golden light hovered around him. It was the goldfinch that Matt once took the form of. He was back again and landed on Jed's shoulder. Jed heard a faint whisper in his head. "Happy birthday dear one." Matt's voice said. A tear rolled down Jed's face as the golden bird took off and fluttered there in front of him. "Matty..." Jed spoke quietly as he held out his hand. Matt landed and stood on Jed's hand, chirping a little. A glimmer of joy overwhelmed Jed as he cried a little, looking at the golden bird in his palm. He was reminded of all the good times they had, running through his mind. His heart wanted him again, but it was no good, it was a thing of the past. Their friendship and love broken apart because of betrayal and selfish desire. The fog became darkness, surrounding them like a gaping mouth ready to swallow them both. Matt flew off into the night as Jed followed. Matt was Jed's nightlight.

Deeper into the darkness, Jed struggled to follow Matt towards a strange cave. The cave lit up as Matt flew around the darkness and landed on a rock near the back wall. Jed looked around as he followed and sat down on the cold stone ground next to the bird. "You are wishing for something that cannot be, dear Jed." Matt said. "But I miss you..." Jed said, as he started to tear up. "Let me go, Jed." Matt said. "I don't know if I can..." Jed said. "I'm so proud of you..." Matt said as the golden light vanished. Jed sat there alone in the dark, crying his eyes out, wishing he could have his best friend back and do all the things they once did before. But, that time was over. Triad was over, Madspiller was over, the lake house was destroyed and now their friendship was over. They would never truly become close friends again and it left Jed with a broken heart, Jed broke down in tears against the cold floor, missing his special one. He could barely breath as the tears flowed and the pain in his heart struck him hard. This was the worst thing he has ever felt. Knowing he would never have a best friend in his life ever again...

One of his tears formed into a sharp gold rock. Jed took it and drew a golden bird on the wall behind him. He made a wish for Matt to come back, but it didn't come true. Jed sat there, just staring at the goldfinch, wondering why this all happened. He knew he had to let Matt go, let all the pain go and go forward into a happy life with the friends he has now. Travis, Bayani, Rhys, Kyle, all of them were waiting for him at home. The magic of the fae came over Jed as golden wings formed on his back. The cave lit up as he flew out and into the dark skies back home. It was going to be a struggle, but Jed had to let his best friend go now and be with his family. "I'll never forget you, Matt..." Jed said to himself as he disappeared into the darkness, into the unknown once again...
