Jeffery Whippo, a professional educator and organizational leadership explains that while "planning" may seem like a simple checklist driven task, successful planning can be extremely complex. Successful strategic planning requires active collaboration between many areas within an organization. This adds a complexity to the successful completion of the objective because of the differences in behavioral, intellectual, structural, philosophical, and managerial differences of the personnel involved in the planning team.
Jeff Whippo further says that successful planning systems have proven to have some basic shared requisites which are drivers in influencing success. CEO support as part of strategic planning is critical. Due to the fact that there are so many different forces within the organization working together, CEO support plays a significant role in setting direction and expectations when it comes to teams collaboration and drive towards a common goal. Keeping the planning project simple and aligned with the organizations management style is another key for success.
Whippo says that planning that is too far outside of the company's overall management culture can provide even more undue complexity. In terms of managerial responsibility, it must be driven through the organization that planning is a responsibility which must be shared throughout the organization and the planning team. The managerial incentive system must further support these concepts by making sure that the planning is focused on the long-term advancement of the organization by ensuring recognition of specific milestones. Besides that, leaders must ensure that there is understanding across all departments in order to influence acceptance of the strategic planning process.
