IN THE BLUE AND SUN

Love goes far. Here love ends. Have me in the blue and sun. Carl Sandburg, 1878-1967

His eyes are on her,

Tracking every move she makes,

Though they're far apart.

Her heart is empty,

On a sunny holiday,

Running from her past.

He gave her diamonds,

And she gave in to passion,

Burning with desire.

The more he gave her,

The more she fought to conquer,

Her hopeless longing.

She had to end it!

Her past held shameful secrets,

He could never know.

So hurt and angry,

The day he woke up alone,

In an empty bed.

So lost and lonely,

Still trying to forget him,

Lying in the sun.

A dark shadow falls,

Across her suntanned body,

Rousing her from sleep.

"Don't try to escape!

And don't attempt to deny,

What you stole from me."

"I don't . . . I didn't . . ."

She's groping for her beach robe,

Ashamed and trembling.

"You stole. And you lied."

The hard facts strip her naked.

"And you ran away."

"But I didn't mean . . ."

She can't explain her feelings,

Or her shameful crimes.

"Was this the reason?"

Photos and police reports,

Fall into her lap.

"You don't understand."

She bites her lip, looks away.

"You deserve better."

"You're damned right I do."

His eyes pull her back to him.

"But I only want you."

"Can't you understand?"

Big fat tears roll down her cheeks.

"I did all those things."

"You did all those things.

Stealing, selling your body.

Now we start again."

"But I lied to you!"

She's weeping while he takes her,

Back into his arms.

"I understand now.

But don't run from me again."

His lips quench her tears.

"You deserve better,"

Her teary voice grows stronger.

"I can do better."

"But first I want you.

I want you right here and now.

In the blue and sun."

"Have me. Have me now.

Have me here where love begins,

In the blue and sun."

So he takes her,

Spending all he has to give,

In the blue and sun.
