A Midnight Escapade

That night, after they had their supper, Celeste, Anna, Mira and Brandi stayed in while the other went on a late night sail across the lake at the end of the back yard in a small yacht that came with the house. At 10:30 they were sat at the dining room table talking. A crash came from above them, which made them all jump. "What was that?" asked Mira getting scared. Brandi put her arm around her. "It was probably the wind knocking something off a table," she said. The tall, blond haired girl was hiding her own fear. "I thought we locked all the windows for the night?" said Anna shakily. "Um, guys. The room above us is mine and Toni's room. We haven't got anything breakable up there except a vase with flowers in it and that was too loud to be a vase or the window," said Brandi. "I don't know about you but I'm going to go and see what it was," added Mira. The rest of them reluctantly went with her for support. They climbed the squeaky stairs to the first floor. The first door on the left was the room the noise came from. Anna opened the door and they walked in. The door closed behind them and they all jumped. "Don't worry it always does that," reassured Brandi. They looked around the room. Straight across from the door, the large glass panelled windows were still intact and closed. The bathroom door on the right was closed. Mira went over to the twin beds on the left of the room. In between the two beds stood the table with the vase on it. Mira kneeled down and looked under each of the beds then stood up again. "Nothing," she shrugged. There was nothing on the wooden floors to show that anything had been broken. On either side of the door stood two pine wardrobes. Mira looked inside them both. Nothing but clothes. Anna walked over to the bathroom door. She tried opening it but couldn't. "Do you lock your bathroom door when you're not in it?" she asked Brandi. "What?" replied Brandi. "I didn't think you could do that since there's no way you can." "I didn't think you could either but the door won't open," said Anna. Celeste went over and tried to open the door. She too couldn't open it. Brandi tried to open the door out into the hall. "This door won't open either!" she shrieked. "What's going on?" cried Mira. "Maybe they are just stuck," suggested Celeste. "Both of them?!" screamed Anna. There was a tapping on the window and all four girls turned to look. They all screamed. "What is that?" Brandi asked. An outline of a face appeared at the window. They could just make out the eyes, nose, mouth and long hair. Whatever it was faded after a few seconds. Celeste ran over to close the curtains. The two doors that Anna and Brandi had been pulling on opened at the same time. The four girls ran out into the hallway and down into the main lounge in the middle of the house. They shut the door, turned the latch so they were locked in, put the TV on and waited for the others to come back.

When they got back Celeste explained what had happened. Then Claire told them what had happened while they were out on the boat...

At 11:50pm Toni docked the boat and the six girls made their way back to the house. Surrounding the lake are trees and they had to go through them before they got to the open grass. The trees weren't thick but since it was dark they could not see much. The only light shining through was from the moon every so often through the branches. The sky was cloudless. They were just getting closer to a patch where light was shining through when a dark shadow went through it. Nobody could make out the shape of it but they were all pretty sure they were not seeing things. When they got to the open grass they heard a shrill cry come from the house so they started running towards it. As they got to the garden fence surrounding the house they saw something cast a shadow in front of them. The light was stronger since there were no trees and their shadows were behind them. Whatever it was, was ahead of them. They got closer to the shadow and it swept across the lawn and disappeared down the road. Michelle looked up at the sky and there were still no clouds and there was no person or animal near the house. Hollie quickly pulled out her key and opened the door. They all ran into the house and locked the door behind them...

"We heard you talking in here so we came over. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was that lady trying to scare us or something. It had to be the same person that we saw outside that you saw at the window," said Claire. "I'm gonna go into town tomorrow and see if she's there. If she is I'm gonna give her a piece of my mind!" said Brandi. "Whatever it is, I'm not staying here tonight!" said Celeste. "Oh come on, we can all sleep down here like a big sleepover," suggested Cherie.
