Rider's Lament

I have travelled to foreign lands
Seeking gifts for you, my lover and friend
From scorpion lairs to shifting sands
Galloping madly to the rainbow's end

I longed to give you all the treasures untold
The stars for you to have and hold
Crystal clear water from the purest spring
I would have delivered my heart on a string

Your hair sprawled over the pillow, waves of gold
Reflected by the transient beams of moonlight glow
But alas your manner towards me had grown cold
And from your wrists I could not stop the ruby flow

Two figures cloaked clandestinely -
in night's ebony armour
Holding you close to my chest -
I heard your one last murmur

So dawn found me riding again
Into the distant hazy horizon
Riding hard against the pain
Of our ill-fated liaison

But most of all I wished that you
Had been there to ride with me
For I had returned once and for all
To bring my bride home, thee.
