_ Chapter 2

When Alaina opened her eyes the first thing she became aware of was the splitting headache she had. However, as she became more wake she started to take in more interesting information. She realised that she was lying in a warm, soft bed. In the background she could hear the faint sounds of an engine. Stranger than any of these was that Nathaniel had just entered through a door on the right and had sat down in the chair next to her bed, his eyes focused on her.

"Welcome back."

"Nathaniel…"

"Nathan," he interrupted her.

"Very well. But where are we? I mean, what happened?"

"Is this really the best time to discuss this? You are supposed to be resting."

"I just want to know where the hell we are."

"Cool it would ya? We're in the craft we came in, heading back to HQ."

"You mean we weren't captured?"

"Alaina, please…"

"Were we or were we not?"

"We weren't." He sighed before continuing, "Just after we'd left, Adrian decided to send out another team in case of emergency. It was lucky he did, without them we would've been."

Alaina was about to question him more when waves of welcoming sleep overwhelmed her. Nathan watched her for a minute before rising and departing from the room.

Both crafts arrived back at the SF headquarters quickly. Nathan immediately set about looking for Adrian. This was unsurprising as he was the captain of the first rescue crew and would be expected to report on what had happened but there was also another reason why he went.

The report went smoothly enough, however, at the end he hesitated. Adrian, noticing this, questioned him,

"Nathaniel, was there something else?"

Nathan took a moment to reply as he thought about his answer.

"Well, it's about Alaina."

"What about her?"

"Well, I think that she has a lot of potential. She certainly showed more courage and interest than ever before."

"Tell me again, what did she do?"

"Apart from throwing a dagger with amazing accuracy, she brought down an attacker with such agility and swiftness I've never seen before."

"We'll see, Nathaniel, we'll see. Is that all?"
Nathan nodded.

"Very well, you may go."
