"Hey, didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?"
The two of us turned around upon hearing that remark. And there she was. The girl. Sarah. She looked utterly unafraid of staring the other guy down. Too bad I couldn't say the same. My heart was throbbing in my chest like a jackhammer. Getting cornered in a dark alley by a big, ugly demon will do that to you.
He was now inspecting her closely as she strode forward. Her lithe frame was nearly half the size of his. We both must have realized this at the same time, because I saw him grin and step toward her.
"He's just an appetizer," he growled in a booming voice. "Want to be the main course?"
Much to my surprise, she didn't waver the smallest bit. I started getting worried. How could she possibly be doing this? Staring evenly at this big muscled mountain of a guy? I mean, here I was quaking on my knees, and I was a man! She was simply. just a girl. And she looked so fragile, so delicate.
"Don't mind if I do," she said with a smirk.
What she did next drove away all of my fears. Sarah launched herself at the demon, so fast that I could barely follow, dodged his swing and then hit him squarely in the jaw with a right hook. He staggered back into a wall as he wiped blood from his split lower lip. She stood her ground, assuming a fighting stance.
"How about some dessert?"
The demon gritted his teeth, glaring at her. "You'll pay for that, smart- mouth!"
But she was unfazed. "Less with the talking, more with the fighting."
With that, they lunged at each other and started exchanging blows. Everything was so fast and brutal that I actually had to put some effort into keeping track of them. The demon's movements were quite slow and cumbersome, while Sarah's were somehow more gracious, much more athletic. She knew her stuff.
Out of nowhere, she leapt into a full mid-air somersault, landed behind the demon and quickly snapped its neck like a dead twig. I was speechless when she let the body drop from her hands. She was panting, but didn't seem overly exhausted from the fight. As I stared, she finally took notice of me and looked over.
All of a sudden, I found myself staring into those deep pure black eyes. And as the connection lingered, I started to feel like there was nothing one else in the world but us. Sarah's eyes truly were exquisite.
"Are you hurt, or something?" she asked me.
"W-what?"
"Are you hurt? I don't know, you just keep looking at me kinda funny."
Great. That's just what I needed. Now she must think I'm some sort of moronic lovesick puppy, staring at her like that and all. But she is beautiful. The way her long jet-black hair cascades over her shoulders.
Her shoulder. It's bleeding trough a rip in the leather. She must have hurt herself in the fight.
"I'm not, but your shoulder." I tell her, indicating the deep gash across her jacket. She glances at it, and then right back at me, smiling. Man, I'll never again forget that wonderful smile of hers. So perfect.
"Oh, this? Don't worry. It'll heal. It's a thing, you know, with my powers, and. Nevermind. You should go home now. Just in case. You never know if there aren't others like this one out there."
I feel myself go pale. "O-others.? There are. others?"
She gives me that smile again. Butterflies start fluttering in my stomach.
"Yep. Actually, in my line of work, they never stop coming. But you're safe now, so. just go home and try to catch some sleep. I know it's not easy, the occult. I sometimes have a hard time believing it, too."
Mixed in with the notes of irony and amusement in voice, I also detected a hint of sincerity that made me trust her. I wanted to trust her, more than anything else in the world. So I just nodded. "O-okay."
Throwing one last glance at the dead demon, she started to walk away, leaving me behind. I stood there, just watching her go. I still heard her mutter something about another ruined leather jacket. Who is she?

Now, two months later, I finally know the answer. Her name is Sarah Myers Grierson. She's your average teenager in almost every front. She doubles her time as a college student, frat member, assistant bookstore clerk, good friend, and an even better girlfriend. Like every other girl her age, she lives for the urban life.
Oh, but did I mention the part where she's an archangel?
Yes, she has supernatural powers. I figured that out when I first saw her fight, but it somehow took me all this time just to grasp it. She's some sort of superhero with super-strength, speed, endurance and reflexes to match, plus a limited form of telekinesis. It's awesome. If you could see the things she can do.
Only the people most prominent in her life are aware of her powers, since she likes to keep them a secret. I don't know why, though. She has friends. She has a faithful boyfriend. And she goes out every night to "save the world from the forces of darkness", like she says. If I were here, I'd enjoy some recognition.
At first, I didn't understand her actions. I'm still not sure if I do. If there's anything I've learned from my two months of constantly monitoring this girl's life, is that sometimes people who have everything to lose make sacrifices for the good of general mankind. These sacrifices could, most of the times, be their end.
Those people are heroes. They risk their lives for the lives of other. Like Sarah did for me.
I will repay the favor some day, of course. I mean to do that. When or how, I don't know. Deep down, the only reason why I've spying on her and her friends for so long is because I feel like I can help them. Still, I'm still amazed at how easy it was to learn this much about her. Anyone could. And use it against her.
Sarah has plenty of enemies. I can't let any detail of her day life or her family fall into the wrong hands. They could end up in a lot of danger. That's a risk I can't afford to take. I owe it to her for saving me.
And so I've waited. For two longs months of going out every night, following and watching her, then, in the morning, getting onto the subway and studying her from the crowd as she heads for work or classes. I even got myself a pair of army binoculars. Can you believe that? This way, whenever she's out fighting demons in the city park, I can afford the luxury of watching her from afar. Taking notes. Marveling at her.
One day, I will save her life to make us even. And that day might be closer than I think.
