The Faerie Stag
I used to be a maiden,
As fair as any can be
Young men came from far and wide
Saying, "Will you marry me?"
I told them, "Nay, not I, find another lass for thee
And in the summer sit beside her
Beneath the ancient oak tree
In the summer sit besider her
Beneath the ancient oak tree."
Once, many years past,
I went out on the moor
With the broom and the heather swaying
As the wind o'er the land it tore
A feeling swelled inside me, I didn't know what 'twas for
And then I saw him, walking
Out, upon the moor
Then I saw him, walking
Out, upong the moor
His antlers they rose high up
Reaching for the sky
His red coat glinted in the sun
Like the fires from on high
I tried to call to him, but all I could do was sigh
And then he turned to me, looked at me
Held me with his eyes
Then he turned to me, looked at me
Held me with his eyes
"Come to me, lassie,
On my back you may ride
Though I'm a stag, and you're a human,
We're still the same," he cried
"We'll ride o'er the moorland and be back as the night draws nigh
And if anyone might see us
Behind the bush we'll hide
And if anyone might see us
Behind the bush we'll hide."
How could I resist him?
I loved him at first sight!
I climbed up onto his back
I didn't feel no fright
He didn't keep his promise, we weren't back by the night
But we kept riding, happily
In the pale moonlight
We kept riding, happily
In the pale moonlight
We rode o'er the moorland
'Till we came to a lone oak tree
I lept lightly from his back
And he turned his eyes towards me
He said to me, "Lassie, I'm a stag as you can see,
But really I'm the king
In the land of Faerie
But really I'm the king
In the land of Faerie!"
He said, "How I love you,
But with me you can't come home
For you are a human,
And you are mortal born."
My eyes filled with tears and I felt like a child forlorn
For I loved the fair stag
And I wished to see his fairy home
For I loved the fair stag
And I wished to see his fairy home
He told me, "There is a way
For us to stay combined.
I'll keep my self as a stag,
And you shall be my hind.
We'll be together for Eternity, together in heart and mind
Upon the moor, in windswept grass
A greater love we'll find
Upon the moor, in windswept grass
A greater love we'll find."
So as a stag and a hind
On the moor we have roamed free
Loving each other
For all of Eternity
A mortal lass and a fairy king is what we used to be
And in the setting sun, we sometimes hear
The bells of Faerie
In the setting sun, we sometimes hear
The bells of Faerie...
A/N For those of you who don't know, a 'hind' is a female red deer.
