Health-care Under Austerity Last December my girlfriend began experiencing discomfort after eating, which escalated over the next few months. In February she was found to be suffering from gallstones, necessitating a cholecystectomy. By March, she was put on the waiting list, but was saddened to find her surgery date set for next December. This is her story of pain under Alberta's cuts ridden health system.

West Reopens Old Sores in Ukraine As the cease fire ended, and the peace process falters further, Ukraine descends further into bloodshed. Besides a possible larger confrontation between Russia and the West, the renewal of ethnic and religious skirmishes is worrisome enough. To anyone with a long memory this all seems too terribly familiar, and for me strikes a particularly personal note given my family history...

3 Two Years – A Poem for Nichole A poem I wrote to commemorate the second anniversary of meeting my first real friend on this website, and my most consistent appreciator. P.S. Anyone else think it is odd that "poetry" is a selectable genre for poem stories? Is fiction a genre for everything else?

1 Gay Rights Must Remain Above Racialization The signing of a new anti-gay law by Uganda's president comes as one of many recent acts against homosexuals throughout Africa, following Russia which last summer passed a much publicized law banning propaganda of "non-traditional sexual relations". Condemnation of these repressive laws has been swift and justified, but are we in the West as tolerant as we would like to believe?

1 The Gainford Derailment and the Carbon Economy On the night of October 18, 2013 I was witness to a tremendous event. Around 1:00 am, a train derailed along the tracks lining Highway 16 (Yellowhead Trail) between the Seba Beach exit and the nearby hamlet of Gainford, Alberta. Carrying tanker cars filled with petroleum gas, propane and other flammable substances, the train exploded in a massive fireball. Recollection/commentary.

2 The Perils of the Perils of Indifference A response to a speech given by Elie Wiesel in April 1999 on the topic of moral "indifference", countering the presented notion of the merits of foreign military interventionism. Written first as a school project, but later also published in Canada's People's Voice in the June 15-30 issue.

2 To Make Worlds One of the essays I wrote for my English 30-1 written final exam in response to the story "Sky-High" by Hanna Roberts, and the general theme of life changes and changing perspectives. An examination on how my quest to create virtual worlds has driven my childhood, and yet how concrete things as an adult are never quite so enjoyable as speculative ones as a child.

3 The Choices in Inevitability Sometimes the hardest challenge to face is the one wherein there is nothing you can do to prevent the outcome, but you still have to do your best to do the right thing. A narrative response essay I wrote for English 30-1 on a topic all to searingly recent to me at the time: the death of one of this year's calves, and what we were able to do to comfort it on its only day on Earth.

An Eccentric and a Gentleman » This was my first ever original work: a convoluted tale a "hacker rancher", a rich girl who will not be, angry parents, a jealous girlfriend, a revealingly obliging shop manager, an abusive suitor and a rather creepy priest. Oh, and a bear cub thrown in for flavour. It was my first try, back in the day, so be nice!
Fiction: Romance, M, English, Drama & Humor, chapters: 13, words: 14k+, 7/19/2012
2 Test Stress My second mature story, after Library Liaison, per audience demand. Just a little fantasy of mine that arose out of way too much studying and anxiety from my Grade 12 finals and diplomas. Warning: contains math.
